I checked yesterday that the GT3 headers DO mount on the regular 996 engine.
Leading evidence: 'Check yesterday' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check mapping etc,.' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

i may prob stick to the stock headers and replace the muff's instead....
Replace stock mufflers too so i hope it sounds nice

They are not of a great shiny stainless steel material but they are very well designed using velocity of gaz and different length for each pipe to flatten the torque curve.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi Guys...(and girls)
Just wondered if anyone has bought any of these cheap headers off ebay ???
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/99-00...mZ270260309564
Sounds to good to be true.... are thay any good?
thank you
s
pretty sure that someone got those and installed them and then had dyno testing done and actually lost power everywhere in the power band. You'll have to search a little to find the thread.
I think the Suncoast headers are the ones to have if you're looking for power gains.
oh ok thank you jw.... i may prob stick to the stock headers and replace the muff's instead.... so here goes for the new mods......
will keep you posted
An idiot question :
Will headers designed for a GT3 fit a regular 996 engine ? GT3 uses the 'old' long bloc doesn't it ?
I thought the clearance between cylinders is a bit different than on the newer 996, but maybe I'm wrong ??
thanks
I have a disassembled GT3 engine and the stock engine on the 996.
From what I remember the GT3 has 115 mm between each cylinder. I'm going to check that tonight and compare with the 996.
Because the headers advertised above on ebay are disclaimed to bo for a GT3, so I'm not sure it would fit your 996.
BTW I think I have a pair of brand new GT3 R headers that I will never use. If they fit the 996 bloc I would put them for sale.
My goodness... they sale these for 90 bucks. A pair of stainless steel headers for $90... they can't be good !
Hi,
How do they look like (honestly) ?
I'm wondering how cheap the material and welding can be for this price.
I couldn't find a pair of decent headers for less than $550 in Europe (about 450 euros) so I can't believe these are good at less than $100 !
thanks
jw996, didn't you report that you had one of the gaskets on wrong which was partially blocking the exhaust port? I thought I remembered that. Did you ever reinstall and re-dyno with the gasket flipped around properly?
Just curious...
Rob
Yes, I remember that too, especially as I got ebay headers some time after that (different product though). I don't think I lost or gained any HP but the TQ curve changed. I lost some low end TQ which is known for equal length headers. However, combined with my GHL exhaust, they woke up an orchestra! The improvement in sound is great; that's what keeps them on my car. They weight the same as the stock headers and I was not able to find any difference in construction compared to higher priced e.g. Fabspeed headers. IMO they all come out of the same factory in China. After 1 year, I've to say that there's nothing wrong with cheap ebay headers; just don't believe the HP fairy tale but that's true for almost every performance mod on our n/a cars (CAI, mufflers, chip ...).
thanks for the info, good to know
Porx, I didn't have time to unpack the engine yesterday and some measurement (I took pics of my new toy instead). Will do it today.
thats great info hwk so if i wanna spruce up her under bits a new cheap header could be the answer - so it sounds better too? im gonna be changing the stock mufflers too so i hope it sounds nice.
OK iroc will wait for ya
regarding the lost hp, I too remember an incorrect install and nothing after that...... even the beloved fabspeed is from china. I agree, it's all the same, I think this is why suncoast got out of selling them, they sold the last sets for around $600 on their website a few months ago.
BTW,
I checked yesterday that the GT3 headers DO mount on the regular 996 engine.
The engine is totally different but they kept the same dimensions (115 millimeters between cylinders) on the 'short block'. I love these guys (the engineers at Porsche) because they always allow a lot of unexplored combinations with parts.
I can't state that the GT3 headers will fit the regular exhaust line since the GT3 R headers I have are longer than the regular headers and don't fit. But from the measurement I did a full GT3 line will fit a regular 3.4 or 3.6 Carrera engine.
So I would say 'go ahead with some GT3 stuff' it will probably fit. At least it will bolt on the heads.
Now, I took a look at the original headers. They are not of a great shiny stainless steel material but they are very well designed using velocity of gaz and different length for each pipe to flatten the torque curve.
It's surprising that some noticed a loss of power, I would expect that the headers on photo in the first post of this thread, that seem to have equal length pipes and a decent 3->1 blender, don't make all cylinders efficient at the same higher RPM resulting in more peak HP. This is usually the deal between stock multi length and racing headers.
Have you had the engine remapped after the headers have been changed? Maybe a bit more gas above 4000 is necessary... that's often the case with that kind of headers...
