Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Reported cause
My '99 has been great..only problem was left front strut at ~77K.
Leading evidence: 'left front strut at ~77k' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'left front strut at ~77k' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Recommend 02 or newer' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. Suggestion
Even now there are changes to the 3.4 and 3.6 factory replacement engines, so I would imagine during the run of the 996 there were known and little known changes throughout.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

hey guys, well i am back in the market..I have a buyer for my 87 911 and am really considering a 996..the prices are so low that its really tempting..I am an air-cooled guy yes,but there are some really nice 996s out there..I am not a snob..as much as I love the 993,its not "that different" from my 87..I have owned both,so its just my opinion...plus I really dont want to deal with another older car..
sooooooo,I have 30-35k to spend..do I stay away from 1999?
is it worth getting an 02 instead of a2000...all the advice would be great..i found a nice 02 targa..thats a thought..no cabs..thanks,j
Sometimes it's just what you're used to(air cooled vs water), that said, after owning 2 'air' cooled Porsches, I am very happy with my '99 996. Go drive a few and don't limit yourself to a particular yearwith a 996.GL
With an '02 you step up to the 3.6l which is supposed to have less engine problems. The later the better IMO. Even now there are changes to the 3.4 and 3.6 factory replacement engines, so I would imagine during the run of the 996 there were known and little known changes throughout.
I've been super happy with my '99. For $35k, you could buy a nice '99 and put $10k in the bank - as piece of mind in case the engine ever does impode. But chances are, it won't. Then in a few years that $10k will have grown and you can spend it on another toy.
Rule of thumb is to get the latest model you can afford. If I had to do it over again, I would avoid the temptaion of the 99 and go with an 02. Yes, the 99's are really reasonable right now, and you are getting alot for your money, but I think the 02 represents a better value for the money in the long run.
Always buy the newest year model you can afford. Each year is better than the last. But then again, the differences are really not so great and you can get some great buys on the older years. In the end it is really all about the money.
I had the same choice and I decided to spend the money and go with an '02. It's been two years now, and other than an faulty oil pressure sender and a noisey clamshell motor (I've got the cab) it's been faultless. I started with a 964, went to the 993, and I'd not go back now.
Well... not to the 993. I liked the 964 a lot.
I also went from an '87 to an '02 996. I personally liked the look of the mk II enough to spend the extra cash but I think it's reasonable to go either way. By the way, while the 996 is a great car and superior in many ways, there are a lot of days I still miss the '87. Not that I'd sell the 996 to get another one, but I'd sure like to have both in the garage.
Joey, I too am in the same boat. Sold my 87911 and looking at buying a 996.
My question to the board is would you pay top dollar for a 996 with a new
Porsche replacement crate engine or would you stay away from them
