1) Based on the available tread on the good tire (50-60%) is it "required" to replace both tires right now.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

3 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

  • Rennlist: 1 discussions

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I went into a supposedly reputable high performance tire/wheel dealer for a front end alignment on my 1999 996 C2 Cab. They showed me how the right rear inside tire sidewall was bulging and thus the tire bad. Tread measurement shows 40%-50% tread wear on the good rear tire. The tires are Pirelli PZero. QUESTION(S); 1) Based on the available tread on the good tire (50-60%) is it "required" to replace both tires right now. Tire dealer says must do. 2) Tire dealer wants $300 each for 265-35 x 18 Pirelli plus tax mounting balancing, etc. Seems high even for that tire but I don't want to get on the freeway to drive home 50 miles on the bad tire. 3) Better tire for noise, tread wear, handling (I know they're all a compromise) based on the fact that this car is rarely driven hard cornering (not like it should be driven) and will never see a track except from the parking lot. Best all around drivable tire with noise being #1. I know tires can be a subject like oil but just thought I throw it out there.

POST 2 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

If this doesn't belong in Tires OK -- can you tell me where it has been moved to?

POST 3Original post

You have to replace both rears. Call tire rack, my p zeros were 250 each for 295's( Dealer wanted 350 each plus m/b). They will deliver them to your door or an approved mounting facility, don't get raped by the dealer on this one.
