I had a real question about the original mk1 mod that used a long small diameter tube for the bypass.

I used the 1-1/4" o.d., and it's not a bad sound, it's just a little too quiet, and not as low pitched as I would like.

Mica: There are all sorts of writeups with pictures on the MKII mod using the 3.6 cans....do a search for modding exhaust systems or MKII muffler mods and you'll find numerous threads on the subject.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

...I just read Tims post regarding the PSE mod where he kindly posted a pic of the difference between 3.4 cans and 3.6 cans. DPS Motorsports was selling cans on ebay that they claimed were from a 2003 996, but are really 3.4
I already have PSE, but with a pesky rattle so I was going to mod some 3.6's and give away my old PSE here. but now I will give someone the 3.4 cans for exactly what I paid: 20.50 + 44.00 ($66 total) + shipping. I will not even open box when it arrives just send it to next person.
Items have not arrived yet. Let me know if interested, perhaps we can save the rennlister the extra shipping if we contact DPS to send directly to new rennlister. I just paid for them yesterday.
follow up, I just got off the phone with DPS to clear up situation, the ebay guy is not in today, but they said they sell many exhausts so the pic may not be accurate, if they are 3.6's I will keep. However, if they are 3.4's he said it was cool to send to another person, so they will be yours for $66 including shipping.
Those are 3.4L cans. Don't let them talk you into keeping the 3.4 cans unless they're free and they plan to send you the 3.6L cans. There are several Rennlisters and folks on RennTech who have offered to GIVE away the 3.4 cans and there have been no takers. They make nice anchors for your canoe...or else door stops. eBay has them all the time and rarely does anyone ever sell them. Just more "stuff" for your garage....but I hope I'm wrong and you can get rid of them. I have a set sitting in my garage too.
Chuck
Don't be so quick to give up on the 3.4 cans... I did a version of the mod which provides an great sound IMO. You can find the details in this thread

Actually Waynesworld is right....I have read that there is a mod for the 3.4L cans that's supposed to be a pretty good sound, but I have never seen nor heard them running. All I can attest to is the 3.6L cans and they're awesome. I was a bit anxious about doing it, but all the positive comments on this board convinced me...and the guys weren't wrong.
I had one of my PSE cans go bad also, (passenger side severe rattle).
So I took my old 3.4 can and did the MkII mod.
Doesn't sound right. Too boomy. Too much mid-range.
I now have factory 3.6 PSE on driver side, modded 3.4 on passenger.
Not good.
So, I'm looking for 3.6L cans to mod, or maybe somebody has a used passenger side PSE they'll give up? Robert?
Kevin,
I had a real question about the original mk1 mod that used a long small diameter tube for the bypass. Other RL's often complained that the mod was hardly noticeable. This prompted me to try and develop and alternate design that would create a much more aggressive sound, but without creating something obnoxious or inducing a drone. The result puts a smile on my face every time I'm in the car - street or track!

Hey kevin,
I have been living with my rattle. I am not sure what Mk PSE I have since it was done by PO. But if I do the 3.6 mod and like it more than the PSE (even with the rattle) and it is the correct side for you, then its yours my friend.
Thanks a ton, Robert!
My rattling can was the passenger side, and man was it bad.
It got worse over the past year, and after a 350 mile drive, it was toast.
Severe rattle at idle when hot. Had to get it off the car.
Porsche-Smile - as Chuck stated above I have done this exact mod (MK II mod) to 3.4L mufflers and to 3.6L mufflers. The 3.4L cans were a little louder than my stock 3.6L mufflers, but I was disappointed that the sound wasn't louder and lower.
Then I did the same mod on the 3.6L mufflers. They sound MUCH better than the 3.4L mufflers. IMO, they sound about 85% to 90% of true PSE mufflers (I have heard true PSE mufflers only once).
Below is some information about the different muffler versions and the different PSE MOD versions.
MUFFLERS
3.4L mufflers
- have a straight pipe coming from the cat (left muffler shown in 1st pic)
3.6L mufflers
- have a accordion pipe coming from the cat (right muffler shown in 1st pic).
Both versions of the stock OEM mufflers have 3 internal chambers, which the exhaust must pass through prior to exiting the outlet pipe.
PSE MODS
PSE MK I mod
- a small pipe (usually 3/4" to 1 1/4" in diameter) is added between the inlet pipe (coming from the cats) to the outlet pipe which holds the exhaust tips. The exhaust passing through the "new" pipe never goes through the muffler, so the sound is louder and lower. The MK I mod is shown in the 2nd pic (note that the MK I mod has been done on 3.6L mufflers).
PSE MK II mod
- the "cap" at the corner of the muffler is removed. Then a hole is cut into the outlet pipe. Then a 2" to 2 1/4" diameter pipe is connected from the new opening on the muffler to the hole in the outlet pipe. This mod allows some of the exhaust to bypass the 3rd chamber in the muffler. The resulting sound is louder and lower than the stock muffler sound. The MK II mod is shown in the 3rd pic.
Either mod (MK I or MK II) can be done to either the 3.4L or the 3.6L muffler. However, from what I have heard in person and from video clips, if you are working with 3.4L mufflers and want to get the sound that most resembles true PSE sound, then you should do the MK I mod. Someone here recently did the 3.4L and a slightly different version of the MK I mod and posted a sound clip. As near as I could tell from that sound clip, those mufflers it sounded just like my 3.6L mufflers with the MK II mod, which I like VERY much.
If you want to get as close to true PSE sound as possible, listed below are my recommended/not recommended combinations. Remember these are just my opinions, and as the lawyers would write.... your mileage may vary.... no guarantee, expressed or implied.... Void where prohibited.... etc., etc., etc.

wow, great info. I have a quesiton regarding the MKI mod though: is there a reson that the small pipe that is added between the inlet pipe and outlet pipe is J shaped? Would it yield the same results if it were a small straight pipe?
Also, would there be a difference in sound if the pipe were bigger/smaller?
The only reason that I can think of as to why the small pipe for the MK I mod is a J-pipe is that it should be easier to slide both ends of the J-pipe into the holes cut in the inlet and outlet pipes.
I think a straight pipe would give you the same sound, but probably be a little more difficult to fit into the newly cut holes in the inlet and outlet pipes.
I did WaynesWorld's 3.4 mod recently, and if I were to do it again, I would use larger j pipe. I used the 1-1/4" o.d., and it's not a bad sound, it's just a little too quiet, and not as low pitched as I would like. Of course, I was going from OEM MkII PSE, so maybe I was just spoiled.
I would rate this mod not quite halfway between stock and PSE in volume.
A 2" direct bypass (inlet pipe to outlet pipe) on the 3.4 cans might be just about perfect.
Kevin,
If you aren't sure you like what the 3.4L are doing for you, I have a passenger PSE for sale here:
https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...n-400-s-h.html
I did think about that.... but went with the more "proven" modII
after my share of being out on a limb, making some really great choices (I seem to remember a GT2 wing in there somewhere) I though better of re-inventing the mod
Thanks, but I've given up on the OEM PSE. Both of my cans developed the fatal internal baffle rattle, and the guys I spoke to about cutting them open and fixing them said forget about it. The only way I would buy again would be used, and
dirt
cheap.
The 1-1/4" bypass pipe hack isn't bad at all, it's just not as good as it could be with a larger pipe.
I am very tempted to find a welder to put in a 2" pipe between the inlet and outlet. I just hope it doesn't sound terrible. I don't think anyone has tried such a large size for the MK1 (3.4)
Yeh, I haven't heard of anyone doing that either. However, I can tell you the 1-1/4" O.D. is too small and just does not divert enough exhaust gas from the muffler can.
I do think some guys have done the 2" bypass on 997's. You might search on that and see what you find. I know one guy who did it, and he loved it. However, he moved to OEM 997 PSE because he got a used set for next to nothing....
Hi all, I'm new to all this. I got a 1999 C4 a few weeks ago and promptly got the driver side baffler rattle. My plan was to just get a used 3.4 can and be on my way. I have no particular desire to do any mods or PSE at this time. But my question is, how would stock 3.6 cans sound on my 3.4 car?
Loaded question I suppose, because if the sound is not much different, I'll take those 3.4 cans off galeriehughie's hands. That rhymes. Thanks.
Mica: There are all sorts of writeups with pictures on the MKII mod using the 3.6 cans....do a search for modding exhaust systems or MKII muffler mods and you'll find numerous threads on the subject. Also search for articles written by FisterD. The most satisfying route seems to have been using the modded MKII 3.6L cans on the 3.4L engines. I went that route when I had my 99 C2 and loved it. It comes close to a PSE system, but nothing matches the PSE exactly.
