Well, while reading the manual I ran across the fact that to operate the top with the key, the system only looks at engine cover position, not the gear selector and parking break position.
Leading evidence: 'Run across the fact' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check hydraulic fluid' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

When I use the key to operate the top, it fully closes and opens and the top warning light extinguishes, 100% nominal.

ususally the light flashes becasue the rear engine lid is open or it thinks it is, check the switch there first

It is when I try to use the dash panel switch that irregularities happen, ie.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

After driving the car for a few miles and over some bumps I again tried the top and this time it worked, and lowered.
Hello, I've got a 2000 Cab. Following a DE, on a not so smooth track I've had an intermittent problem with the top operation. On the first occasion when I went to lower the top, I could hear a faint "click" but the top did not move and the top red light just flashed. I reset the parking brake and the gear selector (it's a TIP) several times to Park in the hopes that this would clear the problem, but it did not. After driving the car for a few miles and over some bumps I again tried the top and this time it worked, and lowered. I've driven for a week or so with the top down but this morning when I attempted to raise the top, it didn't work. The parking brake, gear selector and driving trick did not work this time. Are the proximity switches for the ebrake and gear selector easily accessible? Any other tricks or fixes any one could suggest??
thanks in advance,
Leon
Usually if it's a top mechanism problem it gets stuck partway, aka it won't close all the way, or open all the way. If the top doesn't even start moving and start flashing, my first suspect would be whatever tells the system you are in park..I don't know how it works for tip.
The top mechanism has a combination of electrical and hydraulic parts. The clamshell is electric, the side flaps are electric, and the front top latch is electric. The main canvas top itself is hydraulic.
I don't think fuses would cause an intermittent problem.
Have you checked the hydraulic fluid?
Mine did something similar recently and discovered after 8 years the fluid was almost gone. Very easy DIY fix. Of course during the refill process I knocked the clamshell out of alignment and snapped a piece of the linkage putting it down.
Well, while reading the manual I ran across the fact that to operate the top with the key, the system only looks at engine cover position, not the gear selector and parking break position. The top operated normally when actuated with the key. If I initiated an opening or closing with the key, I could complete it with the top switch. Also, I was able to initiate and complete a closed-to-open operation by using the top switch I think twice, never an open-to-closed operation. After the two successful closed-to-open operations that quit working. At all times, the key control worked. That leads me to believe that it is either the gear select position or parking break position switch that is at fault. What confuses me about this is that when engaged, the parking break annunciator light illuminates and when in Park, the gear position indicator in the instrument panel indicates "P". This would lead me to believe that the car thinks the parking break is indeed set as well as the transmission is in "Park" so therefor I would expect the top to operate, but it does not. Any ideas?
thanks again,
Leon

im here now and again
as to the micro switch, the switch is only looking for a ground, the same wire that lights the dash is the one that tells the ecu the top is working.
I still vote next time it does not work open and close your read lid
I agree that it stands to reason that the same logic lighting the dash parking break light would be telling the top mechanism that it is OK to operate, however..... I have tried opening and closing the rear lid. It did not have any affect. Also, when operated by the key, the top only looks at the rear lid and it has been working with the key. Therefore I figured that the rear lid switch is sending an OK signal. The rear lid is the only switch that can be isolated (operating with the key) so of the 3 involved with top operation (rear lid, parking break & transmission) I think it has to be either the parking break or transmission.
How can I get access to the parking break micro switch?
well, after posting that last one and reading all of the new suggestions/links I went out to the garage to tinker and low and behold, the top worked perfectly! Cycled it up and down 3 times with the dash switch with no problems. Hmmmmmm. I know it won't work though the next time I "need" it to.
