Reported cause
Lots of people replace microswitches and even replace wire harnesses only to find out it was the locking mechanism the whole time.
Leading evidence: 'locking mechanism the whole time' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'locking mechanism the whole time' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Adjust front' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

The window glass may have slipped and needs to be adjusted properly.

I replaced my drivers side door latch with Porsche OEM (yes $$$) but the original door latch lasted 22 years.

They have plastic covers on them, they adjust front to back tilt.

Suggestion
I was able to adjust my window enough that it sealed properly at speed and no longer hit rear window without having to remove the door panel.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Using the inside or outside door handle makes no difference.
Ive had a look around and there appears to be a lot of conflicting info.
My door window doesn't go all the way up when the door is closed. An issue when it rains! I'm assuming it's a sensor somewhere telling the car that the door hasn't been closed.
Otherwise, the window works as it should.
Using the inside or outside door handle makes no difference.
The passenger door is not affected.
Horn toots when the locking button is pressed.
I've read that there are 7 micro switches in each door.
Question - which microswitch should I be looking to replace given that it doesn't appear to be handle related?
It might not be the micro switch. Does the window lower when you pull the door handle? If it does the micro switch is probably good. The window glass may have slipped and needs to be adjusted properly. Unfortunately, youve got to remove the inner door panel and gasket to do so. Its not difficult, but its time consuming and a little fiddly (dont tear the gasket). Theres a pretty good write up in Pelican parts user forum.
I agree with dporto. I did have an issue where the passenger window would hit the rear glass (coupe) when down. There was enough adjustment in the easily access adjusters on the bottom of door without needing to remove panel.
I was lucky. I'm not sure you will be since it seems to be quite out of alignment.
When I purchased my car with full PPI, there was no mention of issues with the glass. I think when they removed the tint before I picked up the car, is when it went out of alignment. Window regulator had already been replaced.
Thanks for the advice.
It does work perfectly at times which makes me think its more sensor related.
The actually window doesnt feel lose or sloppy.
More than happy to open it up but Im keen to ensure I have the right parts before I do so. The parts take a couple of weeks to deliver.
It sounds like it lowered via microswitch/door handle but doesnt return to the raised position? Does it do this intermittently, or does it never go back up now? If its intermittent it may just be a sticky switch - maybe some contact cleaner would help. Its probably a good idea to have a replacement switch on hand before taking everything apart
Would you mind telling me what you did to use bottom of door adjusters? I want to move my window back just a tad. Do you have to do anything to the door latch to make it think the door is shut? Thanks for any walkthrough!
The door latch on my car had cracked solder joints where the connector solders to the circuit board. This caused intermittent window problems like you described. I would bet this is common and not diagnosed properly. I fluxed and resoldered the joints....fixed. BTW you probably cant see the cracks with the naked eye
Looking at door from inside, there are two adjuster just right of centre. They have plastic covers on them, they adjust front to back tilt. I was able to adjust my window enough that it sealed properly at speed and no longer hit rear window without having to remove the door panel. 10 minute job versus a 3 hour job for same results.
Could someone kindly explain how does the car know if the door is open or closed. I understand that there are two microswitches on the handles - in and out. But surely there is a sensor that tells the car if its open or closed. It couldnt rely on the micro switches in he handles.
Is there one in the door lock mechanism? I couldnt find anything online.
cheers
As discussed in a previous thread the door lock actuators are the parts that tell the alarm unit if the doors are "open" or "closed". You can't replace the actuators with VW units they are not the same.
I can refurbish them for you or buy new ones from Porsche.
Okay. Now Im clear. Im being particular as Ive already thrown $500 at it so Im keen to ensure I get it right. Thanks.🙏🏼
Im assuming its the actuator, not the lock mechanism (looks like the actuator module sits within the lock mechanism).
Im surprised more owners havent had this issue. There is little digital content around this fix.
They are all one unit - the lock mechanism and the actuator.
Don't know how you've spent $500 and not gotten anywhere? The door Microswitchs are only $80 each new?
These cars have all kinds of issues with the microswitches. Most people go to the dealer or source a piwis system and read the immobilizer. It will tell u exactly whats wrong and what to fix.
I managed to get the car hooked up today.
The error code is as follows:
59&60. Central locking limit not reached.
Does this mean I need a new door lock mechanism?

Depends on how handy you are. I have heard that sometimes the VW door latch still throws error codes. I replaced my drivers side door latch with Porsche OEM (yes $$$) but the original door latch lasted 22 years. I'll be dead before it dies again. Food for thought...
IMHO, do it right or do it twice. This is the one area I tell people to buy OE genuine Porsche parts. The locking mechanism interconnects to the security and safety aspects of the car's system. I've done this job and completely understand the frustration for the install and cost of the locking mechanism (i.e. actuator). But it's not one that you'd want to cut corners on. Lots of people replace microswitches and even replace wire harnesses only to find out it was the locking mechanism the whole time. I just put a new OE actuator on my current 996 proactively. Why? Because the original factory part is now 25 years old, and I don't want to be locked out of my car like last time because my keyfobs remotes are currently INOP for access to the interior, but work fine to open the door with the key blade and start the car. RFID is working fine. Think about it. You only have a key hole on the driver's side door. If the keyfob remote lock/unlock is INOP and the locking mechanism fails, you're stuck in many cases which will require a tow or locksmith.
