Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

As far as oil, using the 0W-40 Synthetic is best for these cars contrary to what some here want you to believe.
Use high quality dino oil instead of mobil 1 synthetic

Any one use a high quality Dino oil instead of Mobil 1 synthetic to possibly avoid/delay the RMS issue?
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello Gents,
If a 996 3.4L has not needed a RMS replacement in the first 20k does that mean that the RMS is likely good for the long hall (60K+)?
Or is that just some BS the dealer told me?
I am looking at a 01 coupe with adaptive sport seats/18 inch twist wheels/3 spoke steering wheel/Sport Package 6-spd plus PASM/ and heated seats.
It's a low mileage (under 25K) 1 owner car.
Any guesses on a good price?
Appreciate the help. Hopefully I have pics soon if all goes well.

If you perform a search you should find a few more articles about 996 engines (both earlier and later iterations) and RMS and IMS.
FWIW, my RMS on a 3.6L mk II started leaking at around 40K miles. Statements that the engine has X miles of leak free RMS really yields no useful predictive information about a future leaks, however if the factory installed RMS has been replaced at some point with the new 997 seal (which is recessed by 5 mm using a special Porsche tool), I believe the future probability of an RMS leak is reduced.
treat RMS as consumable,
some cars need it sooner, some need it later, but at some point they all need change (100K? 10 year?)
for 20K/8 yr, the RMS is holding up good.
not sure about the good price, did u check edmunds?
Thanks.
The car is in great shape with 21k on it. The dealer put brand new OE Contis
on all 4 corners with an alignment. 1 owner car.

Thoughts?
Sounds nice, something less than $30k would be in order.
Is this a Porsche dealer or an indy?
Some indy's are desparate to move cars, you could offer $25k if you've got your finances ready, just an idea. Let them call you back and counter.
I recently tired to negotiate with a private owner on the RMS issue that his dealer found during the PPI and he blew me off - "Dealer told me it was 'weeping' so I don;t need to replace it...", so I had no room to negotiate. Sale fell thru - for now.
It's a Porsche dealer. I have him sub $30K right now (not inlcuding TTL). That's without a warranty.
Because of the famous RMS issues I am trying to push him further down and hopefully include a short 12/12,000 warranty.
Any one use a high quality Dino oil instead of Mobil 1 synthetic to possibly avoid/delay the RMS issue?
I know this has been asked 1000s of times but please bear with me.
It's a 25K car in this market. ALso, the dealer should offer a CPO warranty. If they do NOT then walk. As far as oil, using the 0W-40 Synthetic is best for these cars contrary to what some here want you to believe. Lastly, the cars that are DRIVEN and have miles on them have better track records with RMS, etc.. It's the low mile cars (cough cough Phil) that are prone to RMS leaks. The simple explanation is that the seals dry up and don't have a good seat.
No need to apologize for asking the questions. We're here to help.
By sending a check to PCNA. Right now it's on the cusp on not being eligible for CPO. The 01 cars are next in line to start getting phased out of CPO (8 years).
Almost all P-car dealers should provide as part of the deal a CPO or 3rd party warranty which would cover the engine and all seals and leaks for a minimum of 1 year. Otherwise what is the point of paying the dealer premium?
If you have around $30K to spend, you might want to consider a Mk II 2002+ 3.6L with higher mileage over a lower mileage Mk I 1999-2001 3.4L. Porsche made improvements to the car with each model year. Buy the newest Porsche within your budget.
