As mine was installed mostly engine out after a 3.4 to 3.8 Nickies build I was able to have the Headers 200 cel cats and X pipe.
Leading evidence: 'Install mostly engine out' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Adjust air fuel ratios' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. 200 cell cats and headers may require software and oxy sensors extensions to get the most out of it and adjust air fuel ratios.

I was going to buy a set for craps and giggles and see if they actually fit!

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Im trying to find a not too loud (muffler bypass is way too loud) exhaust setup for my 2000 c2 for under ~$1700. Does anyone have any recommendations?
As mine was installed mostly engine out after a 3.4 to 3.8 Nickies build I was able to have the Headers 200 cel cats and X pipe. Bought as one go on an ebay special. The 3.8 displacement might help the note, and make up for the X pipe torque loss. It has heaps of torque.
Are you looking just for mufflers or are you looking for mufflers, cats and headers?
What are you looking to accomplish? Weight savings? Performance gain? Better exhaust sound than oem? Or just an inexpensive replacement that it doesn't matter how long they last?
I would be fine with anything, though I would prefer mufflers. I am looking to gain mainly a better exhaust sound but some performance gain would be nice.
If you are looking for better sound as many of the guys suggested, the gundo hack or fister mufflers are an inexpensive option that does sounds great. I was blown away by the sound of Mike Murphys 996.1 on the track. But just driving around casually it was contained.
You get performance gains primarily from a good set of 200 cell cats. But the cats alone will run you $2k. If your cats are in good shape, you can take advantage of the gundo/fister muffler option and save some money for the time when you find the right 200 cell cats.
Yeah, you also get gains from a good set of headers. But the cats are the big power boost. All in, not counting labor, you are pushing $4500+. So when you make your decision, but good stuff that's durable.
If you are looking for a recomendation, I use FVD. They have teamed up with M&M which manufactures the Porshe Motorsports exhausts. High quality, durable and light stuff. The guys also made a number if other suggestions for manufacturers that are all viable. Take your time with spending big bucks until you REALLY know what you are looking for. The Gundo/Fister is a great first step that won't drain your bank account.
Heres a post by Jake Raby talking about how exhaust (and intake) mods can lead to undesirable consequences (bore scoring).

However, I think a muffler mod is quite mild and may not affect much. Cats and headers are likely to be the major factors. I dont have any data to provide, so my thoughts can be taken with a grain of salt.
The gundo/fister muffler mod uses the oem muffler. No changes needed, no problems and inexpensive. Fister reconditions the muffler whereas a gundo hack cuts a hoke and welds a pipe in your existing muffler.
Simple and effective for sound. $600 for fister mufflers.

200 cell cats and headers may require software and oxy sensors extensions to get the most out of it and adjust air fuel ratios. $2000 cats, $2000 mufflers, $2000 headers, $1000 software, labor ?
Here you go. Big bucks. To me it's worth it. But it took me as a first time 996 owner from 2002 thru 2007 to decide what i wanted for an exhaust and then pull the trigger. I am getting geared up to pull the trigger again in the next year or two to refresh the exhaust system with another round of FVD/MM hardware.
Take your time. Figure out what you really want and need amd from what manufacturer. In the meantime, spend your money on refreshing the engine for durability.

Below is a link to various exhaust systems on 996 and how they sound. I have a Billy Boat mufflers, was under $1700 back in the day but looks to be around $1900 now. I love the sound and it's construction is very well done for the price, plus everything lined up for easy install on the garage floor.

Well if you head over to eBay you can find a pair of brand new headers for under $150....LOL. I was going to buy a set for craps and giggles and see if they actually fit!
Im on Fister on a 2000 C2. Super good sound and doesnt drone at speed which is nice.
I actually might sell these if youre interested. Im in SoCal; shoot me a DM.
i have gundo and think its awesome. pretty much sport exhaust with the flaps permanently open. its not loud at all. but does indeed come alive when over 3k rpms. but still, not too loud, and no drone. also like other have said, very cost effective. i was lucky to have found some oem mufflers pre gundo'd for $300 and just swapped and sold my old mufflers. been enjoying them every since
And just to be clear a shop that can do gundo can do fister as well, and vice versa. Consensus is that true fister mod sounds better. My exhaust shop did what they thought was gundo when in reality it was fister.
Another vote for Fister.
IMO its perfect because it sounds great without being annoying loud all the time.
Its going to cost a lot more than your budget to see any real performance gains from an exhaust.
My understanding of gundo vs Fister .
1. Gundo hack drills a hole in the muffler body and the outlet pipe . A pipe is welded in between the two . This bypasses one of the three internal muffler chambers .
2. Fister mod drills a hole in the inlet pipe and outlet pipe . A pipe is welded in between the two . This in theory completely bypasses the muffler but some % of exhaust gas goes through the muffler body .
The Fister mod will be more aggressive than the Gundo . I have Fister modified mufflers on my 996 3.8 with headers and x-pipe and around town or on the highway if you are easy on the throttle it sounds stock . Go heavy on the go pedal and a glorious sound comes to life .
Lot's of good suggestions. I'd list a few I'd consider:
Fister - best bang for the buck / cheapest option. Ideally you want your current mufflers to be in good shape.
TopGear - good value brand. I have their cats and valved exhaust. Zero issue so far and nice welds. Muffler is great with valves closed but gets a bit too rowdy open for my taste. Still a great option and they have standard mufflers available that should be very close to stock.
Cargraphic - More of premium option but some good options, including valved mufflers. I'm considering giving them a try in future. Lot's of great reviews and well made.
