So, I'm not about to cast stones at the guy who has more toys than me (although I will be filled with envy).

FWIW....put her on the track Saturday...only ran 2 20min sessions in beginner group with the local PCA but the F1 Transmission is like cheating!!!

So I thought wouldn't it be great to replace the 993 with a Ferrari, since you are not suppose to drive them anyways!

Still requires the once every 3 year $2-3k belt change, all fluids change once a year regardless of miles.

The F-car is a totally different ball game, buyers are very picky and if you don't follow the standard fluids and belt change with doc to back it up you will loose your pants when come time to sell the car.

But to me, it wouldn't be worth the money and effort to keep a new(er) car sitting in the garage, worry about every mile on the odo, or to be afraid to hit a puddle, run over a leaf, etc, ha.

So even though the recent model Ferraris have become much more reliable than previous generation, it is still not a practical performance car like a Porsche.
Well...my 911 is coming off lease and after much research and soul searching I was pulled into the "darkenss" that is F-Car
PS Lapis Blue 996 Hardtop is now for sale on Ebay
No darkeness about that! I think I'm a bit jealous
Congratulations on a beautiful 360. When able to please give more details about it, more pics would also be nice
Now, THAT car is anything but the dark side. I think one thing that's so terrific about this board is that, although we're Porsche enthusiasts, we pretty much are CAR enthusiasts and love finely built, high performance machines of all types. Never fear posting a pic or topic on a beautiful "non-Porsche," although it doesn't hurt to have some Porsche content in the thread
Me and you both! LOL!!!!
But I still have one 911 in my stable. Sold the old faithful 993, kept the 996 as daily driver. The 993 guys couldn't understand my logic behind that.
Congratulations on your find, your "Dark side" looks just like my "Dark side". A good example 360 spider is not easy to find, took me about 6 month of searching.
Options I that I wanted: Daytona seats, Challenge grill (front and back), manual shift, modular wheels, red caliper, scuderia shields, and of course all service and update done. In addition the car came with front CD changer, tubi NGT exhaust, spare tire option. but who needs the radio in a f-car.
Agreed, that is one sweet car! Congrats, Jason!
Phil, how much additional enjoyment would you get from having a F-car parked in your garage instead of the C4S?
The only problem I can see with that is you would have to learn to make a different
vrrooomm
sound to mimic the F exhaust.
that's awesome man. i have more of an interest in upgrading to a ferrari than upgrading in the 911 line-up. the ferrari is on a whole other level of existence as great as the overall 911 line-up is - this is coming from a bachelor's perspective. i'm sure you fellas understand
i'd def lower mine with bigger, wider wheels. i can't stand the way the stock wheels are so narrow and how much they tuck into the body esp on the 360s.
430 example:
I surprised! I knew you were going to say you got a new M3!!
Oh well, hope you hang around here and keeps us old farts straight!!
BTW, that is one awesome car!! If you ever go out for a spin and end up in SC, give me a ride???
my pork4s has that covered even, but the crazy thing is, the chicks who like this flash and dash.. are the risky types. you know that kanye song w/ jamie foxx? yes.
it's more for the swagger.
Robin yours is a bute!!!!! Our cars are very similar. I think the only cosmetic differnce is Red piping on my seats.
Thanks for all the kind words guys
The car is pure filth (in every good way) Everytime I look at it I feel like I am cheating on my beautiful wife!
I actually like the stock exhaust....plenty loud for me under hi revs. Tubi and Capristo level 3 are amazing though!!!
listen here to cap level 3:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vkcfuCFv2TA
That sound makes me wanna slap my momma!!!
I have only driven it about 50 miles so I am still learning it but I find it very drivable. The stearing is appropriately waited and there is much less cowl shake and body flex than the 996 cab. I think the TCU on the F1 gearbox has been upgraded b/c it engages first quickly and smoothly and in sport mode shifts are very fast. I was absolutely against F1 Trannies...until I finally drove one..and then there would be no 6sp man to scratch my itch! It pulls hard and tracks very well. I can't imagine what a Modena or a CS must handle like. I am very very pleased with her!!
As I really get to know the car and put in a little light track duty I will update you all!
uhhhhh totally diff ball game.
the modena is a much more modern/reliable/upgraded car than the old ferraris you rolled and also much more expensive. yea, if i had your old ferraris (which many of us could swing including me and would call an old stripper you really don't want to see dancing) i'd worry too, but with the modena, i wouldn't worry nearly as much. in fact, i'd venture to say it's as reliable as the water-cooled carreras.
a buddy of mine has been running a 2000 360 modena for half a year after he dumped his 997S after half a year. not one issue and he drives it as often as he drove the carrera.
Even though the 360 Modena have been named the most reliable Ferrari, it is by no means anywhere close to Porsche catagory in cost of ownership. Still requires the once every 3 year $2-3k belt change, all fluids change once a year regardless of miles. The F-car is a totally different ball game, buyers are very picky and if you don't follow the standard fluids and belt change with doc to back it up you will loose your pants when come time to sell the car. Also if you have anything more than 30k miles on the car, your car will take another major hit. All parts, I mean all parts Ferrari related is very expensive. Try these on for size: floor mats $600 at the dealer, $350 aftermarket, the plastic clips to hold the floor mats down $100 for a set of 4, 30k tune up kit part alone is $1100, etc...etc...etc Clutch $3-4k, and only lasts about 15k-25k miles depending on driver, the F1 clutch is about $4-$6k, and you will need to do that every 15-20k miles.
So if she is a stripper, then she better have diamond nipples. Most of the Ferrari owners consider the f-car as a super model who forgets to flush the toilet everytime.
So even though the recent model Ferraris have become much more reliable than previous generation, it is still not a practical performance car like a Porsche. No WAY close! But again it is what it is, I don't ever hear kids telling me that's a nice car to my Porsche or give me BOTH thumbs up when I drive by. NEVER! Maybe California kids are spoiled.... I now have ******* neighbors who would never wave at me when they drive by actually stop in front of my house, smile and say hi.
Owing a Ferrari can only be catagorized as the most exciting experience in my life, so for me it was worth the money as I believe life is all about experiences. Life flashes in front of you so fast, you barely have enough time to regret the things you should have done. So why even think about it if you can afford it.
Notice the big grin on my face? LOL!
You pretty much hit the nail on the head with that post. It does put a grin on your face.
$2-3 grand for the belt service?? Yeah, if you do it yourself!! Ha!! Seriously though, Eugenios is about the cheapest around down by you that I know of (of places I would actually take it to) and he gets $2999 for it. Most will be paying $6k because they have no where to take it but the dealership and their $165/hr rates.
Ferrari ownership is a special thing but I am happy to be going back to Porsche again for awhile. I say this though, as I have something else up my sleeve that will make an Enzo look tame.... :-)
Well... I think the $2-3k price for the belt change was from Eugenio's web site. I will take care of all the small stuff, like fluids, brakes, etc. Probably clutch too when come time. But the timing belts for some reason just scares the crap out of me on a freaking Ferrari engine LOL! I know I know, it is all in the head, maybe couple years from now.... I barely even drive the darn car, just looking at it makes me happy.
Model that does not flush, stripper with diamond nipples, whatever it is I want one!!
Well put Robin, you are lucky, keep on
Your F-car is sick, no comparisons needed. Glad you posted another picture of it
let me preface this by saying i'm sure you've got a lot of enthusiasm for cars and we could talk about cars all day...
but get your panties in a bunch, it ain't got nothing to do with me mr. regional president f-car belt buckle dude.
cuz i absolutely love bringing out the inner-ruler out of dudes who have it at the ready in their back pocket. the d!ck measuring contest is oh so real in you that you go so far as to post pics of your dated ferraris no one cares about except ferrari nerds who think wearing the logo in public is actually cool (the "accord" of ferraris LOL), talk of blueprints about your next house freely, with the cars outside with the lambo doors up.
laughs aside, i think it's pretty easy to understand why someone wouldn't care about the older ferraris because like the other posts, they don't age as gracefully as the 911s (e.g. husker's examples). it's what you get for being flashy and cutting edge in design and the 911 is not all that of a flashy car esp given teh rich heritage.... as rich as the ferrari's. wtf is magnum pi?
let it be known that i've stated many a times i am a ferrari fan and would like to own one someday as i prefer it over porsche. for now, i drive a dated pos 996, but unless you rollin' an 360 stradale+, i don't give a flying stuttgart horse or maranello horse about how many f-cars you've owned or what kinda pretty house u live in. u don't know me.
P.S. Robin, I thought you were a chick!
i stand corrected.
S2000 - E46 M3 - 996 C4S vs. Porsche, Porsche, Ferrari, Ferrari and BACK
Yeah, totally diff ball game!
Don't take Ben serious Huskerbill; he's just a spoiled kid that hides his inferiority complex behind blinky wheels.
I respect the opinion of guys like you who are into sports cars and have something to tell about their own experience. I don't feel much for: "my buddy has a ..." blahblah.
Well said
I researched this car fot months. I studied Forza, ferrarichat, Autotrader, cars.com, dupont registry, ebay and subscribed to the Ferrari Market Letter to learn all that I could to try to buy the "right" Ferrari. After much research and a few test drives I settled on mine. 8800 miles, at a Ferrari Dealer, well optioned in "resale red", all recalls (campaigns) and scheduled service up to date, with a Ferrari 1 year drive train warranty. Then after more research I figured out what it should cost, offered that to the dealer who...eventually...sold me the car for a fair price. The point is that you can get really really hurt buying and selling these cars if you do not do your due dilegence and buy the car right. Time will tell if I have done so...but i suspect I am off to a good start.
Please do not take this as an attack on you credentials but from my research the 360 has been the most reliable Ferrari made...save the 430. It is no 996/997 but it was a giant step forward for Ferrari. I mean engine in belt service...radical!
Vast improvements in service intervals and parts were made with the 360 and improved further with the 430 (ie timing chain instead of timing belt). The future is bright for F!
My sources include the FML, Forza Mag and exhaustive searching through many areas of ferrarichat.
I guess we will need to agree to disagree.
Best
PS I will likely "be back" perhaps b/c the F drains my wallet but more likely b/c I am a car guy and Porsche, Lambo, Mas, Ferrrai, Bugatti all have something that tickle my fancy...and will likely continue to.
Hey, Jason - Congratulations again, and all the Ferrari info. has been very enlightening from you and the other Rennlisters who own or owned one.
Ben, I've enjoyed your posts for a while now. That being said, I'm pissed that you'd use this thread to make the ugly comments you did. I understand how the discussion to that point warranted a personal attack on another members lifestyle - that was ugly. I pay for the privilege of using this discussion forum for information and camaraderie. I'm not interested in a fude.
One last thing - If any of us is going to get offended by size of house or the quality/number of expensive cars someone else owns on Rennlist, then I'd suggest you find another forum. We have all been blessed with more than the avg. person has (by a long shot). So, I'm not about to cast stones at the guy who has more toys than me (although I will be filled with envy).
Belts were just done on my 3 weeks ago. My plan is to let Ferrari do everything. Probably not absolutely necessary as there are a couple of very well regarded shops in the area but I will sleep easier. My current plan is to roll out of the 360 in about 2 years so the belt will have another year b4 F recommends serivce.
...never took it as a dis on my "New To Me" Ride
Two Thoughts:
1)Bill your collection is sick!!!! and your CURRENNT home looks amazing.
2)Don't mess with Ben it looks like he could crack a coconut with those guns!
Ay Ben: Any more tickets to the gun show???....need any mice to feed those pythons??? ...sorry could not resist
FWIW I have already been humbled twice in the two days I have owned the F
1) Driving through Tempe a guy yelled to me, "Is that a rental?" Ouch!
2)Sitting at a bar a young women said "Oh you got a Ferrari!...is it a 430???...oh a 360....those are FINE too" LOL!!!
Gotta love the occasional god smack!! Guess my Shizza DOES stink!
Jason,
Finally the weather cleared up here in S. CA, but supposely we are getting hit hard again tonight.
Took the f-car out for a little warm up ride (once a week), parked the car on the driveway after I got home. A total stranger (I think he is one of my neighbors) drove by asked me if he could look at the f-car. I said yes, he stood there looked at the f-car for like 10 minutes, I stood nervously next to him wondering what his next move would be... In the end he said "Very nice car I have a whole collection of them at home...." Match box he later added, I smiled.
Please post as much info as you can cram onto Rennlist about your Ferrari experiences. Like a few Rennlisters, my dream car is a 360 Modena Spyder. I have already turned my garage into a "showroom" for my 964 Speedster and would love to put a 360 in its place. That car is pure sex on wheels. However, I have been apprehensive to do so because of the "carrying costs". My Speedster has yet to depreciate over my 8 years of ownership, and I can't say that about too many cars. And on the maintencen front, my Speedster's expenses have been next to nothing...
Enjoy those beautiful F-cars guys. And if your experience meets your expectations, then I might be forced to join the club!
-Blake
Hey Robin, you don't look Italian.
Great cars, but don't you guys find it a bit difficult to fully enjoy them though?
I guess that's the trade-off. I'd love to have a historic old Ferrari parked in my garage and drive only occassionally.
But to me, it wouldn't be worth the money and effort to keep a new(er) car sitting in the garage, worry about every mile on the odo, or to be afraid to hit a puddle, run over a leaf, etc, ha.
The guys keep saying "enjoy in good health..."
-- Yeah, don't let it give you a heart attack, loosen up, get out and drive it, screw the odo.
-Dave
I don't look German either... LOL!
I drive the **** out of my 996 everyday, in matter of fact I have so much fun with my 996 I ended up just parking the 993 only drive it once every couple weeks. So I thought wouldn't it be great to replace the 993 with a Ferrari, since you are not suppose to drive them anyways!
So for daily driving enjoyment there is nothing else but a Porsche. But for the most amazing driving experience once a week at a time.... A Ferrari!
Porsche are a step up from "regular" automobile as far as driver skill and technique requirement (More so for the older gen 911s), the Ferrari I would have to say is another step up from Porsche. Not that it is hard to drive, but very hard to drive it perfectly as one with the car. As the car is super reactive to every input, but very precise and very sharp. No "bubblly feeling or margin anywhere".
Another good 360 Exhaust.
The exhaust is from Prototech in Ft. Lauderdale. It features stainlees steel pipes with resonators and an X-pipe and full V-band couplings. Normally flames will not appear downshifting due to the Ferrari ECU utilizing a fuel cut. If you open the throttle slightly upon down shifting it produces flames. This allows fuel to enter the exhaust due to the timing retard and then burns in the pipes. Typically it is more difficult when there are cats and mufflers as the fuel burns upon entering them.

GoodGoobleyGoo!!! LOL!!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A4di_x4Qop8
Nice move, and completely understandable.
I'm already feeling the tug. No sooner did I buy my first 911 (just two weeks ago) when some guy in my building starts showing up with a Scaglietti in the office parking lot. It kinda makes the 996 look like a steroidal VW Bug...
The Spyder is awesome, but my (eventual) P-car of choice will be a 575 Maranello ...
Great car! Enjoy!
My son's been bugging me to buy a Ferrari ever since he sat in a 360 Spyder several years back. Reliability doesn't concern me, but the nearest dealer is in San Antonio, and I have yet to come to grips with the idea of a 200 mile round trip (on a crappy interstate highway) for routine service.
Always one with his glass half full, my son asked to choose the colors for my truck during restoration, got his mom to take him to the PPG paint store, and selected the body paint code as rosso corsa (that's Ferrari red) and the roof paint code as bianco neve (that's Ferrari white). See my avatar. It's a great color combo.
There are those in the Ferrari community who scoff at the V8s, saying a proper Ferrari is front-engine, V12, and red. Of course, they're all old enough to remember the 250 SWB Berlinetta, quite possibly the most beautiful car ever made. So ghostwriter11, if you purchase a Maranello, make sure it's red!
That's my problem... I would have liked to have saved a little longer to for something like a 360. But when the closest dealer is 800 miles away in Illinois, if I get in over my head on DIY, there's nowhere even close to convenient to turn. Plus I think our roads would destroy the car.
Beuatiful car btw...
I've always liked 550s and 575Ms.
To say any previous Ferrari to the 360 does not age as gracefully as a 911 is ludicrous.
Ever heard of any of the following?
365 GTS/4?
250 SWB?
275 GTS?
288 GTO?
250 GT?
Thanks for the continued kind words
Yeah...if money was no object I would love a 550 Barchetta or a 599 and the 360.
The 360 should prove to be a good "starter" F. I am already pushing my dealer for a retail purchase on the 430 replacement
....since I am "in the club"
We are lucky here in Phoenix to have good roads and a dry climate...350 Sunny Days a year...hot as Hell in the summer but the roads never take a beating like places where there are real seasons.
FWIW....put her on the track Saturday...only ran 2 20min sessions in beginner group with the local PCA but the F1 Transmission is like cheating!!! SO MUCH FUN!
Spoke with Poff today. We are trying to figure it out. Looks like the closest he can come is St. Louis which is 3 hrs away. I may take a minivan to meet him if I can get it to fit in the mini van. I'll call you tomorrow.
