Is 20k miles worth the $6,000 for car 2 or should I go with car 1 and use the saving to get a ext warranty?
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I am trying to decide between 2 cars of the same year. Both are 2003 996
car 1 : silver w/blk int, Porsche crest on pwr seats, 17" whls, tip 47k miles asking 42K
car 2 : grey w/blk int, man seats, 18" whls, tip 28K miles asking 48K
Is 20k miles worth the $6,000 for car 2 or should I go with car 1 and use the saving to get a ext warranty? My buddies are telling me that 20k miles are no big deal on this engine. Your thoughts will be appreciated.
i say it depends on where you are...
20k not a big deal, but i personally think 48K is way too much....
you can get an equivalent mileage C4S around here for that much...
Based just on the information you've supplied I'd say none of the above. IMO both cars are overpriced.
When lookinng for any Porsche, you have to be patient. There's always plenty of them for sale but it's hard to find the one that's right for you. I would not limit your search to the immediate area where you live. Search a 300 mile radius and be ready to fly/drive to the car you're zeroing in on. Good luck
+1 on waiting. I bought my '99 C2 in November for $35 with 30K miles on it from a dealer. I paid too much, but was happy to do it given the condition of the car. It took me about 6 months to find the car that finally had everything I wanted.
Today, the market's even richer with choices and the prices are better. I almost wish I had waited another few months. I'd also take a really close look at the history on both cars, along with a solid PPI.
what's the condition of both car?
milage gives u a rough idea what to expect, but u have to see it for yourself.
20K mile is nothing on those car. it's a porsche, not ferrari, after all.
Yet....as noted before on the forum, enthusiast forums tend to under-value their cars. Hence the adage, buy from an enthusiast sell to a novice. Depending on where you live, those may or may not be reasonable prices.
Fewer miles are always more attractive. Yet, if you see yourself driving a lot of miles each year (some will make up the difference in mileage in a single year), then the difference may not be important.
You might put an '03 996 in KBB twice and just change the mileage. That could give you a reference point for how much dealers value lower mileage. If memory serves me, it hasn't represented a smaller financial value than I would have expected.
Good luck.
Thanks for all the replies, I have one more option, my indie BMW mechanic goes down to the Manheim auctions every month, I am going to have him check to see what he can find, maybe he can find a 997 for under 50k.
If they are essentially the same car/options/year etc.. $6k more for 20k miles less is absolutely worth it. Especially if the car has had it's $30k inspection (make sure it has)!!
However on either of these cars, you should be able to negotiate at least a few grand down.
