Some of you might remember my post last month asking you to check your steering for me to see if it made this knocking noise/feel when you wiggle the steering wheel left and right while the engine is running.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

4 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Some of you might remember my post last month asking you to check your steering for me to see if it made this knocking noise/feel when you wiggle the steering wheel left and right while the engine is running. If I turn off the engine while I am still wiggling the steering wheel the knocking stops instantly. I can feel this in the pedals, on the floor, and you can hear it as well. It is a very sloppy feel, certainly for a Porsche. Mind you I rent Chevy Cavaliers for work that don't do this. 2 weeks ago my dealer blew me off and said "oh they all do it". So I found a salesman and got the keys to 5 911's, 3 2004's and 2 2003's that were used and NONE of them exhibited what my car did. The service mgr. said it is a "real pain in the ***" and he would rather fix any other part on the car but the rack and pinion.

POST 2Original post

DAMN.... Mine is making the same noise. What did the Porsche mechanic told you exactly about getting it fixed and the cost of parts/labor? This problem just started in my car a couple of weeks ago, how long had yours been like this? I hope this will be an easy fix but i doubt it..

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Vove, Mine is under warranty so the topic of parts and labor never came up, only that it was a VERY difficult job should the rack need replacing. My problem appeared about 3 months ago with approx. 7,000 very well cared for miles. It is just plain simple a very crappy feeling or input to sense this in your hands. Keep me informed and hopefully Viken or someone can chime in with tech advice.
