Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I just had a new from porsche remanufactured engine installed. The original one had 50K miles and had a intermedate shaft break. So thinking a new
remanufactured with the 2 year parts only warranty would be like putting in a new engine WRONG. Now what ! My repair shop is an independent and is calling the dealer who sold us this defective engine. Will porsche pay for the labor to repair and re-install and who inspects the problem from porsche
and makes the descision.
Has anyone had the same problem?
This remanufactured engine was built by porsche and the engine is not as easy to take apart as the 993 engines. My mechanic said sounds like a broken or loose lifter. But to find out we need to tow it to a dealer and have a Porsche rep call the shots. It's a very loud metalic clanking comming from the drivers side rear bottom back toward the transimission.
I was in the shop and saw the replacement engine and was impressed it looked totally brand new every sensior, wire was replaced. The engine case
looked new all the parts looked new, every seal was factory fresh. After spending $8,400 for the engine and $1,200 to install plus I left a $2,400
core deposit you would think I had a 80,000mile engine. I thought porsche
when they made these remanufactured engines rebuilt 3 months ago in 2004
would have by now the information from past problems and wanting to keep their customer base happy a perfect engine better than the original 996 production year of 1998 thats 5 years to get their act together. To date I have put over $20,000 into a 1999 C2 with 51K miles. I actually drove this P car for only 15K miles I am the third owner. I purchased this car with 32 k miles in 2003 for $34,000 and now up to $54,000.
I love the car even with these problems but can't believe the bad luck or
lack of quality control at porsche.
Drivers side rear bottom near transmission sounds like the scavenging pump area. If it is the pump or part of the valve train/cam this area is easily accessed with the engine in the car.
$8,400 for engine doesn't sound right. The engine is $6767 list and with PCA discount you should be able to save 5% on top of that. Core charge should be $2100 and you should get that all back.
Hi Pete,
Yes it could be the oil pump sounds like the exact area. Also on the price I was quoted $6,700 but that price has gone up per the dealer at Town Motors in NJ. I checked my Invoice from the Shop that did the repair (Town Motors was the supplier)Cost was $8,153.95 for the remanufactured and $2,327.08
for the core charge total $10,481.03 out of pocket untill they return the core charge. Could be they are charging me twice for the core charge I already questioned the price increase and will again. Does anyone on this forum
know the actualy price as of this month for a remanufactured 996 engine from porsche ?
Thanks for your help !
