Visited a muffler shop today recommended by my regular mechanic (not a Porsche specialist) who has been using the muffler shop for years.

So, odds are that the muffler I get back will have more use on it.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Can anyone recommend a good welder, machine shop, muffler shop, etc...in the Atlanta metro area to perform the Gundo hack for my car? I'm willing to drive 1-2 hrs outside for a great shop, if needed.
The reason I'm asking is because I don't want to go to
any
local muffler shop and let them butcher it with welds that look like wads of bubble gum 😂 I've never sought out work like this, so this is kinda my first rodeo.
While on the subject, I'd expect that whoever I find won't have any experience with this mod. Is there an established go-to guide that I can point that person to as a reference?
Thanks!!
Update:
Visited a muffler shop today recommended by my regular mechanic (not a Porsche specialist) who has been using the muffler shop for years. The muffler shop guy put the car on the rack and I explained what I wanted and he passed on the job. Said he didn't want the liability 🤷♀️
So, this is probably gonna be more difficult than I expected.
My only advice is to try to get stainless steel for the cross tube pipe and weld it that way. Not all shops carry stainless, so they have to order it, which means they wont be ordering 12 of pipe.
And if the shop doesnt want the liability, great. Make sure they arent liable.
I hit up a local muffler shop, showed him some pics I got off the internet and said "can you do this and make it nice and clean". I must admit I also told him it had to be done right or pass if not comfortable. Less than $200, he did it right. I like the hole in the wall shops sometimes. The big guys wouldn't touch it near me either.
The shop I mentioned above was one of those hole-in-the-wall type shops. I'll just have to shop around a bit.
I've considered this. But, my car only has 46K miles on it. No salt. So, odds are that the muffler I get back will have more use on it. Plus the price is more than I'm looking to pay a local shop to do it.
This is turning into one of those "quick little mods", that ain't so quick.
I don't know what your wrenching skills are but you might have better luck removing the mufflers yourself and then trying for estimates.
Nothing against $700+ Fister. He does great work. Having said that, basic welding isn't magic. If you don't care about the 'Fister' cachet, it shouldn't cost more than $200.
Just got the quote back (asked for some other stuff, too):
- $630 for Fister mod.
- $1,417 for install of H&R springs and Bilstein B8 shocks,
- $342 alignment, corner balance
Nah. I passed on that.
EDIT:
To put that into perspective, I've received two quotes from euro car specialist shops for less than $1000 to have the springs installed
with
Hunter alignment included. And, by all accounts, the Fister mod should be $200 (give or take) by a competent muffler shop.
