Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Is there a way to test the oil cooler, before just dropping in a new engine.
Leading evidence: 'Test oil cooler' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Test oil cooler' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I've had the opposite. In colder weather, I found some water sludge in my oil fill tube but was told that it is normal. I'm not sure about your case though it doesn't sound too good.
BB45:
Oil in the coolant reserviour is usually either head gasket failure or oil cooler failure.
Those are the primary places where oil & coolant come closest to each other.
The warranty should get you a new engine.
Well, I'm getting a new engine. Since I'm out of town I have yet to get a detailed analysis of what caused the problem. Will update the list when I visit Beverly Hills Porsche/Audi this week for my loaner Boxster and ask some questions.
Picked up my 996 with the new(rebuilt) engine. My dealer had NO info for me. They just pulled it out and sent it back. The new motor is working great. This was remarkably painless. Kudos to Beverly Hills Porsche service department!
I think it's tragic that PAG doesn't cover such a defect after the warranty expires. If there are weak points in the engine IMHO, they should be covered longer...or heavily discounted, or SOMETHING. For paranoid people like me, it's like driving a time bomb...but that's just me!
Is there a way to test the oil cooler, before just dropping in a new engine. Also would a bad oil seperator cause oil to mix with the coolant or vice versa?
