Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
13 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

Hello! Been a follower of this sub for a long time, with more frequent visits lately as I strengthen my search for the perfect 996 C4S for me!
I am curious if anyone here has had first hand experience with Joe Anselmo Motorsports in Newport Beach? I have narrowed down to a couple of C4S' and one in particular had a complete engine rebuild done about 25k miles ago, which included an LN Engineering IMS. This included the following:
-main bearings
-rod bearings
-LN IMS bearing update kit
-cylinder sleeves
-rod bolts
-complete engine gasket set
-engine chains & rails
-chain tensioner guides, chain rail pads
-cover plate solenoids
-hydraulic lifters
-valve job
-update gears for no slippage: weld or pin
-valve stem seals
-valve seats
-fuel injectors clean/replace if needed
-oil cooler
-air oil separator
-water pump
-thermostat
-water hoses, fittings, clamps if needed
-vent hoses, fittings, clamps
-ignition coils, spark plugs
-belt
-oil filter
-oil filling tube
-oil vent line
-exhaust header bolts
Now, here is the catch. The work was done after a radiator failure and done by a previous owner. The current owner mentioned that getting any further information on this was not easy, nor was the shop very forthcoming. The shop also did not provide a serial for the LN IMS and it has no sticker. The only thing that the shop provided was an email listing all the above and that is all, directly from Joe himself. No receipt, no reassurance on the workmanship, warranties, nothing. So, while this is throwing a wrench in things, i am also of the mindset that it has lasted 25k miles in 3 years of daily driving and has had no issues, so maybe it was all done as it should have been? The current owner performs oil analysis that have come back clear without any flags.
Curious to hear if anyone here has heard of this shop and if anyone has had personal experience.
Thank you so much!
If you can’t get documentation on the work you are taking risk. Up to you to decide what’s level of risk is acceptable to you.
Good luck with your search.

Im gonna say that if an owner does oil analysis the car is going to be the best it can be. In direct contrast to a car owned by somebody who did oil changes on a lunar eclipse schedule.
Its gonna be a strong engine if it was rebuilt. Better than oem and much younger in parts. Buying a 20 year old 911 typically doesnt come with many assurances but I think this one has potentiallly more than most.
Without knowing how it was sleeved and what with - you could have big issues. Also - note that pistons were not in the list above. Does that mean they reused the original pistons? Mixing original pistons in new sleeves, especially if steel sleeved is a no-no. I personally would not touch it.

No experience with that shop or seller,,,,no documentation = didnt happen! The only way to ensure is to have a technician YOU TRUST go over the entire car.
You gotta get details on the rebuild. It could be a first class rebuild and it could be crap. My concern with every 996 is that if no one has the history on it, then things weren't done properly. There is always an exception to the rule, but it a low probability exception. Life is a bell curve. Make sure you are on the proper side of it.
Easiest thing to do is get an oil tests. But remember, an oil test on fesh oil doesn't show the details of wear like a couple of thousand miles.
Good luck with it.
Thank you for all these helpful responses. I am going to call the consigning shop that shipped the engine to Joe Anselmo and see if i can press them on the piston question. The documentation is there of the work being done, the engine was shipped from WA to CA and then reinstalled, however, Joe Anselmo's shop did not provide any additional info - which is where the flag lies.
Will keep you all updated. I am eager and excited to join the 996 club with my first P Car, but, also cautious and risk averse.
This is the black Tacoma C4S correct? No affiliation but that car is sharp and the rule of "buy the seller" applies here. Owner appears to be an enthusiast and took care of the car. Doesn't tell you about the rebuild under prior ownership of course, but he drove it 30K over 4years.
If you're serious about it I would get a PPI with borescope and rely on that to make your decision. Tell the shop about the engine rebuild and your concerns and make sure they review the UOA. He is asking a premium but the car was looked after.
this is exactly right! The seller is wonderful, honest and transparent and forthcoming with all information. It certainly does come at a premium, but, I like that its been used as a daily and that it still looks stock.
Great advice. Ill find an independent shop and get my due diligence done. Appreciate it!
