Also, there is a lot of RD that goes into the factory aerokit, I found the GT2 wing to be a little squirrley at speed, it got better with a TT lip but at 140mph at the track I'd feel better with an oem/tested peice.

Suggestion
chris, you're kind of a purist, so i'm surprised you're running the fabspeed stuff when porsche offers an upgraded exhaust.

typically wouldn't you set the rear a little higher to compensate for the squat under acceleration?

Does anyone have a trick to get the bonnet latch lined up just right, tried for an hour, still not exactly right.
Just picked up an oem aerokit for around 2k(list for 7k), amazing oem quality down to the last detail and engraved 996 pn. Do yourself a favor, before you jump on a inexpensive/untested aftermarket spoiler spend some time looking for an oem version, well worth the wait. Been there, done that, got the t shirt, don't want another! Will post pics after it's painted.
Great find! How much more to get it painted? Are you going to do the install?
Good luck and keep us posted.
I really wanted the OEM Carrera wing and I was lucky to find the 996 I wanted with the OEM wing and rocker panels already on. However, I do like the full aerokit better.
Got it from a guy on ebay, a 6speeder, I had been looking for about a yr, just couldn't fork up 7k. The kit includes a wing/decklid/harness/3rd light blockout and front lip. The quality is pure oem, so much different that the aftermarket one I had and got rid of last yr. I don't mean to slam Misha, I had his wing on my car for a while, I thought his quality was good, but this is great. I think I'll have Diamond paint it over in Huntington. Yes, I'll install it myself, very easy.
Look at DPS Porsche Parts a/k/a departstop there on ebay with a oem GT3 bumper for 950. I picked up the bumper and oem skirts from them I believe the skirts were $720. Brandywine I believe has the skirts for 640 but since I would pay no additional shipping for the skirts had DPS send both. Chris where is diamond in Huntington I was going to use Empire Auto on Jericho Tpke. in Huntington Station i've known the owner who is also a Porsche owner for a while.
DJ, I second Brandywine. They are willing to work with you. I bought two GT3 seats from them, got a pretty good deal. Chris, is Diamond the paint shop next to the old RPM?
Is this the one??
Yep, next to TKX racing, formerly RPM. they painted a wing for me in the past that needed a ****load of work, 400$ looked perfect when done, this one needs zero work.
That's the aerokit!
wait a minute....
you got rid of a gt2 look wing because it was too flashy but now you get the oem aero package which is just as bling/flashy, just because it's oem? seems like you still got the t shirt but just not a knock off.
you could've kept the gt2 wing and just got the aerokit lip.
BTW is your kit the same "aerokit" for the TT. that kit is sweeeeet!
i agree 100%, nothing beats the quality of oem. this might not hold true for the new TT though. after seeing spy shots of it who cares if it has oem quality when it is BUTT UGLY
thank god for the aftermarket
i made the mistake of buying an aftermarket taco wing and it sucked. i am glad i am getting an oem one from a fellow rennlister/6speeder.
It actually sits considerably lower(3") than the misha GT2 wing and at a completely different angle(about 7 degrees), not as 'in your face', blends with the lines of the car much better, more refined, imo. Also, there is a lot of RD that goes into the factory aerokit, I found the GT2 wing to be a little squirrley at speed, it got better with a TT lip but at 140mph at the track I'd feel better with an oem/tested peice. Bottom line, nothing beats oem. I knew you would chime in sooner or later!
hehe, different strokes for different folks.... still looks flashy to me but i LIKE DA BLING
ya, you needed to balance out the rear with an aggressive front with the gt2 rear wing you also need the gt2 front bumper or equivalent. the aerokit lip might have been just the ticket.
Installed the oem aerkit last night, had it painted last week, looks great, will post pics when I get it cleaned up a bit. Did a nice high speed run this am, felt great, no floatiness like I saw with the GT2 wing.
Does anyone have a trick to get the bonnet latch lined up just right, tried for an hour, still not exactly right.
We are one in the same my friend. Instant gratification when it comes to mods on these cars. As for 6speed, I have no idea. Got really tired of that board (especially) the admin deleting posts, etc.. Anyway, I have not been over to 6speed in quite some time. I even removed it from my bookmarks.
i have a brand new OEM 99 GT3 wing/decklid for sale if anybody wants it. it is what was offered on the GT3 in europe that year. it looks like what people refer to as the "taco" style wings. i believe retail on this piece is about $6K (fwiw, i they're out of their mind charging that). you reuse your factory pieces (latches, etc) to mount it up. first $1500 plus shipping takes it. looks like this:
for 996s i think you would have to dut out an extra hole, on the inside, for the air intake. gt3s have a different intake location. if this taco wing is the "aerokit 1" version then it has the proper intake hole.
just the wing. this would be a good start though
the wing is the expensive part. sideskirts and bumpers are relatively cheap.
this is a true GT3 wing and not the aero kit piece. i've never fit one of these, so you'll have to take carlos' word on the intake hole. should be a simple mod though from the inside.
i actually found out list on this piece is 8K and the dealer cost is a little more than half that. porsche pricing personnel must be hitting the crack hard if they thing someone is going to shell out 8K for a wing.
hey dog,
just post of pic of the inside showing the hole(s). we can then tell if it will fit or not. another thing to consider is the different fan placement on the gt3 decklid. this may also interfere wth various engine components.
are you starting a a porsche parts business?
i'd love to grab one of those 9ff/ATE centerlock wheels you have for sale but i would have one set too many. make me an offer i cant refuse
no new biz, just came a across a pcar yard sale
i'll get a pic up tomorrow.
my first offer wasn't an offer you couldn't refuse??? half price? you're killing me man
anyway, the wheels are SOOOLLLLDDDDD
6speed is down so i didnt know they were sold. good! that prevents me from spending even more money
i thought your price was 2900. do the 9ff wheels go for 6K? yipes!
no, i was teasing about them being half price. the retail on these wheels is close to 5K though. i had a link to the US distributor with their pricing over on 6speed. this was a hell of a deal if you wanted these wheels.
i actually like your winter wheels. they look sharp.
how do you think that front lip will hold up? i don't think i'll ever paint the lower lip on my turbo bumper as I scrape it constantly.
Chris, I saw that auction a while back. I was very undecided about if and what kind of rear spoiler I wanted. I saw a 2004 C4s in artic silver with the same rear spoiler as yours. IT is the only spoiler I will consider now. Hopefully there are some suppliers lurking that can help us C4S owners. Great grab! Your car looks great and I enjoyed your comments about quality and especially the aerodynamic nuances.
Steve
I think someone has to say it, so I guess I will. Among all the wings I've seen on a C4S, I think Chris's is the best looking one. BUT, I think the 911 looks it's classic best WITHOUT wings. It's timeless, classy as well as classic, and stable as a rock up to and beyond 170 mph. I think the 996 C4S is the best looking 911. Leave well enough alone. Just my .02.
Chris doesn't seem like a guy that gives a rats *** what we think, but that being said, I'm with Palting...
An aerokit looks sweet on a plain-jane 996, but the C4S has so many more interesting visual details, I'm wondering what the rationale for the switch is. Just something different?
Just something different, and to plant it's fat *** at the track a bit better! Afterall, how many aerokit C4Ss' do you see, not many, I think they only sold 50 or so kits worldwide.
I hate anything aftermarket, you cant beat the porsche design.
Ive never seen a 3rd party piece ive liked.
Porsche spend a lot of time and money getting it right, some owners spend the same undoing that work.

Actually I kinda agree with Criven on that, the OEM looks natural, the aftermarket stuff is out of place. But, that's not the key problem, mainly it's the complete lack of any AD testing by the aftermarket.
At 150mph at the track, which would you rather have? I've had both, my vote is for OEM all the way.
As far as Ess Three's car being slammed, that's the X73 ride ht, same as mine.
i like the oem stuff, but it's a little bland. don't get me wrong, i went with an oem front turbo bumper and oem knockoffs for the rear bumper and wing. looks good, but kind of yawn, bland.
now, give me $15K to spend on bodywork, paint, and install, techart front and rear bumpers with the techart type IIC wing for sure. for as little as most of us spend at 150 mph (sebring is a giant track and even lots of cars can't hit or sustain that speed there), i'll take my chances with a kit that is a little more exotic looking.
chris, you're kind of a purist, so i'm surprised you're running the fabspeed stuff when porsche offers an upgraded exhaust.
what is the ride height of the x73, measured from the ground in inches though the center of the wheel to the bottom of the fender lip?
I am pretty much of a purist, except when it comes to the bottled up stock exhaust. PSE isn't an upgrade, it's just loud, imo.
I believe the last time I measured it, the ride ht was 25.25" rear, 25.50" front.
yeah, must be backwards. unless chris is runing some sort of weird negative rake
even backwards, that's still pretty damn low. i'm running 25.5 front and 26 rear with my pss9's.
oops. chris posted before i could post mine. wow, what a strange way to set ride height. typically wouldn't you set the rear a little higher to compensate for the squat under acceleration? kind of weird to squat it lower right from the get go.
I'll measure it again later, those were the figs off the top of my head. As for the squat, that's the way Stuttgart makes the C4S(TT too).
Low, yes, and it scrapes on everything!
I may end up painting it flat black, can't stand all the little scratches.
Wow! That is a great @ss shot. I could definitely be convinced to go the C4S route with the Aero kit instead of a GT3 later this year
Great looking car.
that wild how the rear end sits down like that. i thought most suspension setups shoot for at least a slight positive rake.
nice pics. it doesn't look as low as the first shot, but it's really low.
one of you guys with the x73 should take some measurements when you get a free moment. i'd really be interested to know what the ride height is on that setup for comparison.
I'll get you some accurate measurements tonight.
How many of you guys are sitting in your office ,like me ,with the rennlist 'white noise' on in the background all day?
i thought the point was to get some rake too. this would plant the front end even more on fast sweeping turns. i would also think it lessen the "floating" feeling with these cars.
right now i am @ ~24.75" in the front and ~25.25" in the rear. i think i am going to raise it since i just tore off my front bumper (steepish driveway).. just as i was leaving for laguna seca, ARRGGHHHH!
Guilty. In between teaching courses I visit "the list". I have also been know to visit while in class when I have a terminal at my podium. Now that is what I call multi-tasking!
i don't even know how you could drive that thing on the street at that ride height.
we have nice roads in FL and i'm scraping constantly at 25.5 in the front.
well, then again, you did just tear your bumper off.....
Here are the ride heights of the C4S USA, C4S ROW, and C4S X73, courtesy of Loren, the technical guru of anything Porsche. For consistency in comparisons to any other suspension, please note the reference points of measurement.
Of note, on the US C4S vs X73 C4S, the car will drop 30 mm all around. The rake shouldn't change.
well, if you go from the ground, through the center of the wheel, that should put it in the same place every time, no?
that's what the pca did in that susp article if i remember it right.
My exact measurements are fr 25.75", rear 25.25", so I was slightly off. Remember Porsche spec is +/- 10mm either way. I've never yet seen a C4S that doesn't "squat". Ground thru center of wheel to fender edge.
I thought it was interesting, too. What makes it even more interesting to me is that the stock ROW C4S has a lower front relative to the rear rake compared to the stock US C4S. But, when you go X73, the rake goes back to the US rake. You would think they would go with the ROW rake: i.e, lower front. I would like to think they did what they did for performance reasons.
this can't be better for performance. with a lower rear, compared to the front, you will have more of a rearward bias. with more of a rake you will transfer more weight to the front, helping and already rear weight biased car. when you corner balance a coilover supsension you try to match the corner weights. inevitably the rear end gets higher.
yes? no?
i was looking at my buddy's 02 turbo today. he just had the x73 on his car done. it looks about even all the way across and is definately a little higher that what you guys have posted.
is the x73 for the turbo different than the c4s?
One would assume yes. But, if that were the right answer, then why would the Porsche engineers do otherwise? This is purposely aftermarket retrofit, therefore not governed by manufacturing regulations. I doubt that it would make any difference in cost of manufacturing. It would also be targeted for people looking for higher performance. There has to be a good performance reason why this is so. I just can not see any other reason for the ride height to be what it is other than for performance. Maybe, despite the obvious in theory, it is actually better aerodynamics and better balance in reality this way?
The part numbers for the X73 for the turbo are different from the X73 part numbers for the C4S. In the same way that the stock suspensions are different. Both are tuned for sport, but tuned for the specific weights (turbo is heavier), and for the HP/torque difference. If he just had it installed, the car does settle a bit after some time.
The TT verrsion has heavier springs, that's it. All the kits are like this, Prosche obviously does it for a reason. I've never seen a C4S that didn't 'squat'. Mine handles and looks great.
Mine and Ess three's are 3000 miles apart and have nearly identical settings, it must be intentional.
One reason I could think of is that the clearance between the tire and the wheel well, or the wheel well lip and the ground, is not the measure for the cars true aerodynamic or true weight balance. The slightly wider space between the wheel well and the tire in front probably has more to do with providing more clearance for a tire that turns left/right as compared to the rear tire that doesn't turn, and really has nothing to do with the cars true rake and attitude. The current X73 stance, the "squat look", provides the best rake for the C4S as a whole. Making the nose come down more than the recommended may actually provide too much front down force or too much front bias to the detriment of performance.
Of course, this is all conjecture. But, it's conjecture based on the belief that if the car were to perform better with the nose lower, the Porsche engineers would have designed the X73 that way.
Whatever the reason, the PAG engineers only know for sure. All I know is that it handles better than most 911's on the track. Interestingly, I passed by the dealer on the way home, the new C4S also has the same squat, about a 1/2", it's intentional for sure.
well that 1/2" squat is just about the same as your earlier stated +-10mm. a +-10mm variance doesn't sound like it's "intentional", it's a manufacturing tolerance... an acceptable range. i guess porsche is ok with it.
the squat isn't intentional "for sure", the tolerance is intentional "for sure".
if the squat is for clearance then i can buy that.
hey, the fender well measurement can be misleading anyway. it is based off appearances rather than axle height. this argument can be all for naught.
still sounds strange to me. none of the other 996's have this squat setup.
as far as the fender measurement, it is pretty accurate if everyone is doing it the same way. ground up, through the center of the wheel, to the bottom edge of the fender. it would be kind of hard to mess that up. i think the only part that could be open to interpretation would be the "bottom edge of the fender", but I think it is generally accepted that this is the part of the fender where it takes a 90 degree turn and goes under the fender.
yes it is an easy way of measuring but you have no point of reference.
porsche measures from the road surface to the hex bolts. one can first measure it this way to determine a fixed reference THEN measures wheel well height THEN compares the front to back wheel well height. if this isn't done then the wheel well height is only a measure of appearance.
that said IMHO the squat still looks weird.
