Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

In considering a Cabriolet, 2002 996, I realize the chassis may not be as stiff as the coupe. But can I track my Cabriolet? Should I get the optional hard top for more stiffness? Does PCA allow them at track events w/o a roll bar?

POST 2Original post

I have never tracked my cabrio, but I have to tell you that my hardtop does not seem to make the car any stiffer. It creaks and squeaks and drives me crazy. Since I do not have to deal with snow, I am all soft top all the time.

POST 3Original post

I track mine ALOT and while the hardtop might not net you any more torsional stiffness, the added safety is WELL worth the price of admission. I use 6 point harnesses and the added safety of the top is my main concern. Optimally, a roll cage would be the best but the likelihood of rollover at a DE event are EXTREMELY low.

POST 4Original post

I've taken my 2000 C4 cab to a couple of DE events. Both required the hardtop, but I've heard of others that allow cabs as long as they are equiped with pop-up bars. I'm so far from the limit of my car that I don't think any change in chasis rigidity would make a bit of difference for me. The hard top comes off as soon as possible after the DE. If you are in an area where you don't otherwise need the hardtop, use the money to buy a roll cage instead. It would be safer and some events require one anyway.

POST 5Original post

i autocross mine w/ top down but i only do scca solo 2...

POST 6Original post

I've been to several DEs with my 01 C2 Cab. Any lack of performance caused by reduced body stiffness is secondary to that caused by driver. Hopefully, this situation will change over time. I install my hardtop for the DEs. The only time I otherwise put it on is briefly during the Houston summer (approx. Feb - Nov) when it's too hot for top down driving. Anyway, it's clear and 65 DegF outside, so I'm off to bar-be-que some dinosaurs!
