At one time I had mine installed with the antenna under the plastic by the windshield wipers.

I just ran the antenna wire through the the body with a wire going inside the passenger compartment.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

It can easily be removed with no change in appearance to the factory unit.
The car audio installer did a good job of finding a small unit that wasn't too obtrusive. It can easily be removed with no change in appearance to the factory unit. Unless you are a huge country fan, there is nothing else on AM/FM up here, so this really was a necessity.
I have seen the posts about directly wiring the iPod to the CD changer input, however there are no aftermarket connections for connecting from the firewire port on the iPod directly to the CD plug yet.
It looks like there are several companies that do this (Denison ice link, NeoiOn, and maybe others) so I think I will wait until one of these is available.
You can see the antenna now. Not ideal, but it I would rather look at the small "blackhead" as I call it, rather than listen to nothin' but country. I don't know the model of the antenna, but it was separate from what came with the Sirius receiver because that one was even larger.
The Sirius is an SC-FM1 Universal FM Modulated SIRIUS Satellite Radio Tuner. I paid $200 for this and a bunch for labor, because they spent a while teaering thing apart and trying to see how they could wire for the iPod.
That is just what I was looking for!
What's the name/model number of this unit? Is it hard-wired? Where did they place the antenna? How do you control it through the PCM?
Sorry for all the questions but I have PCM too and it's hard to find something that works with that.
I'll get the info for you when I get home. The unit is made by Sirius, but they installed a different antenna -smaller (I will post pictures). I don't know if there is any other way to do the antenna, but they have placed dozens on Carrera cabs and Boxters and say that the way they did mine is the cleanest, best-looking way to do it (but it is still noticable).
It is hard wired but also FM modulated ( I don't completely understand this.) The unit pictured controls the stations and I think the receiver is in the trunk.
The sound is great. I never thought that I would pay for radio, but it is worth it for me.
Great mod, DMac. I'm considering the same thing, only not using the modulator- taking the Aux kit from the headunit to the line out of the sirius direct box.
The unit is called Starbase and is a Gen 2.5 Sirius unit. The Gen 3 units (more features, capable of smaller units b.c less heat) will hit the shelves in about a month. I was initially looking at the Starbase (and still am) to do a custom, in-dash install but I want to wait to see the new Starmate Replay with the Gen 3 chipset. It seems to be just as small, but has something like 50 hrs of storage to record to and can be detatched from it's car kit (or possible DIN install plate!?!?!?) and toted with you to be attached to a home kit or potential boom-box device. That portability might make the difference for me. Take a look...

I wish there was a unit that fit perfectly in the space that had Satellite Radio with the new pause/record features, Navigation (a nice simple one with intelligent user-interface and a quality touch screen) and an interchangeable doc that was simple to switch out for different typs of iPods that would let you directly view the iPod controls on the LCD touch screen.
This is really what I need/want. I guess a CD player and AM/FM could easily be done with this as well. It seems so simple, but I am stuck with trying to get aftermarket mods in to make it look at clean and simple. It shouldn't be this hard.
If it does, I haven't seen it or heard of it and neither has the car audio place that I had my Sirius installed at (in business for 24 years and seem to know their stuff-they should for what they charge).
I was considering going with a Dell DJ and the inline wired remote/FM tuner. This would allow me to place the MP3 player out of the way and still have a visible display to show what was playing along with controlling the unit. My idea was to remove the CD tray from below the radio (its pretty useless to be honest) and have the DJ LCD remote controller mounted in a filler piece of ABS plastic. A good car audio installer could do this with no problems most likely. I just recently picked up a 6Gig iPod mini dirt cheap (bought it off a friend who needed cash ASAP) but I'll probably still buy a DJ and remote down the road. Below is the 'user guide' PDF doc for the Dell DJ remote if anyone is considering my idea. The prices on the DJ are fairly nice and the remote is much cheaper than any of the iPod accessories I've seen.

Yes, I had considered removing the Nav. CD and relocating it to the trunk (who changes that CD anyway?) and using that space for Sirius.
dmac, any pics yet?
Now that is a good idea and would look great.
Sorry, I have been a big slacker. I will try to find time to get pics together and also dig up the info on the sirius system. It is fm modulated and plays through the fm tuner.
I have to admit, for the sound quality it a cab, I don't know if I could tell the difference between the quality of the CD-directly wired and that of the Sirius-FM modulated.
I need to have my wife put a CD in the changer and then switch to the Sirius while I am blindfolded to see if I can really tell a difference in the quality without knowing which is playing.
The model number and new pics are added to the first post. Sorry it took me so long.
TD in DC has a nice Satellite Receiver system with the PCM as well. You can see his pics in the thread in the 996 section about Aluminum Pedals. He mounted his just below the opening for the CD and above the AC controls.
Dmac,
If you're concerned with the look of the antenna, just move it. It is easy to relocate. At one time I had mine installed with the antenna under the plastic by the windshield wipers. It works great and is out of sight. I just ran the antenna wire through the the body with a wire going inside the passenger compartment.
(sorry no pics...removed it to put in another car)
