I did have the drop link replaced (pretty sure that's the part, about $50), when they went to tighten the old one, the bolt broke. So they thought they had it fixed, but didn't.

They also told me that they could not find the problem (fun answer!), they said they could change the inner tie rod first ($500), and if that didn't work put a new steering rack ($1500) on it.........but could not say it would fix the problem.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

5 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 1 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I took my 99 C2 with 18,000 miles to the dealership because it sounds like something is loose on the driver side front end after you drive it for about 30 minutes (it does not make this sound when it's cold). You can feel the rattle thru the steering wheel and clutch (pedals). It sounds like something is going to fall off! The dealership told me they checked out to make sure everything was tight and safe to drive. They also told me that they could not find the problem (fun answer!), they said they could change the inner tie rod first ($500), and if that didn't work put a new steering rack ($1500) on it.........but could not say it would fix the problem. I'm obviously not real interested in having them do $2k worth of work and not no if that will fix it. My steering is not effected and you can hear this sound the best with windows up, driving slow on rough pavement. Any help would be very appreciated, I don't even want to drive the car I love because of this!

POST 2Original post

Only drive it on short trips, seriously, take it to an independent porsche shop in your area, f the dealer.

POST 3Original post

I had a front end rattle that was fixed in five minutes and socket wrench. Further, I am so not mechanically inclined... I would check the front sway bar and drop links. I don't know if yours is stock, but I am sure even the stock ones get loose ever once in a while. The non stock ones seem to get loose on a weekly basis. Beyond that, I agree with Chris, skip the dealer. Unless you have a warranty, why the hell bother?

POST 4Original post

Chris, we both joined about 11 months ago, yet some how you have reached 1,300 more posts than me. I feel like such an underachiever!!! What am I missing.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

thanks for the input! I did have the drop link replaced (pretty sure that's the part, about $50), when they went to tighten the old one, the bolt broke. So they thought they had it fixed, but didn't. For me, the strangest thing is that it will not make any noise at all, until you drive it for 30 to 45 minutes.
