I think I've used my dad's SL with the top up once in 8 years and I drive that one about 2 months every year (I won't anymore after I get the 911).

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm looking at an '02 C2 Cab with 9K miles and a little over 1 year of factory warranty left. The car has PSM, 18" Carrera wheels, heated seats, hi-fi, xenons, etc. It's perfect (one rock chip, no scratches or dents), good service history and very few minor warranty claims. I haven't had a PPI done yet b/c we haven't negotiated a price yet. They are asking $59K and based on my research that is a few K too high. So I'm trying figure out what a good offer is. BTW: the car is my favorite color combo but it's NOT a very popular one with your average P-car buyer and it's at a dealership in a city that is not a high-end car mecca so it's not selling and there is very little interest in it after 5 weeks on the lot. Also, I'm familar with the 99-01 interior and cupholders but forgot to look at the updates on the 02-04 interiors. Is there only one cupholder on the newer interior??? Are there any good aftermarket cupholders for the 996??? I will use this car mostly for long drives and occassional track days, so 2 good cupholders is a must if the lady friend is going to find this an acceptable method of transportation.

POST 2Original post

50-55k, offer them 45 and deal from there, remember you're the one with the money and you call the shots.

POST 3Original post

The '02 cars should all have the dual cup holders in the dash.

POST 4Original post

Don't insult them by offering a stupid low number, they won't take you seriously after that. This sounds like a nice low miles car that is equipped the way you want. Offer $55k, go as high as $57k which is the right market here (for a 6 speed).

POST 5Original post

$57k is reasonable given the condition and mileage. I'd think $55k is as low as it gets. If you can get it certified w 2 yr add'l warranty for $57-59k, I think you've got a deal. 02 has excellent cupholders for 2. No worries. Get windstop, clear bra and make sure to check coolant and oil leaks. Check for rattles too when top is up. If rear tires are worn, get new ones. Looks like a good deal. I'd say go for it!!!

POST 6Original post

If it is from a Porsche dealer, aks them why they are not offerring the car as a Certified Preowned vehicle. If they offer that as an option, it shouldn't be more than $1,600-that's about what the dealer has to pay Porsche. It's cheap insurance for an extra 2 years of warranty. By the way, the '02 had a lot of structural improvements over the prior (99-01) models - and an extra 20 HP.

POST 7Original post

I haven't been impressed by the CPO warranty at all. I took in a list of 7 items for them to look at and exactly ZERO were covered, all of which would have been covered within my bumper-to-bumper BMW warranty

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Unfortunately, it's not at a Porsche dealer but with over one year of warranty left it gives me plenty of time to decide if I want a third party warranty. On paper and by my eyes (very picky eyes I might add) the car looks great but I will let my trusted Porsche mechanic do a full PPI before I write any checks.

POST 9Original post

not a p dealer, no cpo, like i said 45 cash initial offer, believe me they will initially say no then call you back with a counter. you have to deal from a position of power. otherwise be weak and pay the list price. they will take 45k in hard cold cash in front of their pea brain eyes very seriously. jmo, different negotiating tech for different folks.

POST 10Original post

This is a good strategy. Never start negotiating at the price YOU WANT TO PAY. It will be that much more difficult to give ground. JMHO. Good luck.

POST 11Original post

I understand negotiation, but if you offer thousands of dollars below trade-in or auction price, they won't call you back. They will think one of two things: 1. You can't afford the car 2. You are so totally ignorant that you have no concept of the value, and they would have to educate you, taking time away from other sales Know the market, don't expect to get something for nothing.

POST 12Original post

Here are the Manheim Auction sales for a 2002 991 Cab. These are acutual results. Remember that a dealer is never "stuck" with a vehicle. If they cannot sell it they will simply call a wholesaler or ship it off to the auctions. $45K is not a reasonable offer in my opinion since they will get more than that at the auctions. I think you are looking at the mid $50's for a car in above average condition. POST 13Original post

Agree completely with Shark - you need to determine what the car is worth to you and not go too far over that #. I mean, if you love the color and the PPI checks out, is it worth it to pay an extra few $$ for exactly what you want, I think so. I just paid $57,000 for an '02 Lapis Blue C2 cab - it had 24,000miles on it and was in excellent condition. This was a private sale - to me, the car was worth $55K (I looked at A LOT) of cars - I got an extra set of rims with new Blizzaks mounted for cold weather driving...to me, that made it worth an extra $1500 or so - the extra $500, well, I loved the car so the rest is history. PPI checked out and I haven't looked back.

POST 14Original post

Lots of good advice here. I purchased a '02 C4 cab with 22,000 miles about three weeks ago. I had looked for several months and was going to wait until winter to save a little, but I found exactly what I wanted. I had a list of mods that I was going to add but this car already had the expensive mods done. I paid $64,600 that included an additional 2 year Porsche warranty in addition to the six months that remained. The vehicle had a $116,000 sticker so you can imagine the options that it came with. If I had shopped around, I probably could have done better, but I had exactly what I wanted and I've had it to enjoy for the last few weeks of perfect weather! To me, it wasn't worth it to wait and look around to save a few grand more. The vehicle was only 3.5 hours away, so I was able to actually see it in person before purchasing without too much hassle.

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

From what I can tell the car I'm looking at should sell for $55,300 on the high side down to $53K on the low side. Anything more then $55K for an 02 C2 is above market. C4's bring slightly more money right now. The problem I'm having with the dealer is that he overpaid for this trade and doesn't want to go down below $58K and I'm not paying over market for ANY car!!! I'll give him another few weeks of not selling it and then I'll make my offer again. I'm a cash buyer and this dealer seemed put off by that, I guess that means he won't make any money on the financing???

POST 16Original post

I'd run from that place - people sound like jerks. When was the last time you've ever heard of a dealer paying more for a trade than it was worth? Never, because they never do. I'd call them back, tell them you've seen many cars like theirs for $55K and that you'd really, really like to buy theirs since they are closer to you. Tell them you'll be in that day with a $55k cashiers check.....if they say no, then so be it. Use the next 3 weeks to keep looking for the perfcet car. You'll find it!

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Well, I've been looking for a few months and this is the only one I've found in my preferred color combo that has the required options and is not a beater. Originally, I was looking a few different convertibles, but now I've decided that the 911 is the best fit and I'm only looking at them now. I do believe this dealer overpaid for the car since he uses NADA values and is not typically a high-end car dealer (serious lack of knowledge about these cars and high-end buyers). They have been more then nice so far, we just don't seem to be able to agree on price just yet. I continue to look for other cars but I'm drawn to this one based on color, options, condition, history, location, reputation of dealer, etc. I have all the time in the world, so settling for other colors will come later or if I find the right car in one of my second choice combos (which are all more common color combos). Honestly, I've considered just ordering a 997S cab but my frugal side has convinced me to look for the right 996 cab and save $30-50K. This car is not my daily driver and I might never drive it to work, so it's strictly a weekend, nice weather car for me. There is a good chance that I will never use the car with the top up. I think I've used my dad's SL with the top up once in 8 years and I drive that one about 2 months every year (I won't anymore after I get the 911).

POST 18Original post

I am in So. CA (strong market) and I sold my 02 996 coupe beginning of July for 54K. My car was in excellent condition (original **** owner) with full leather, supple leather, 18" Carrera LT alloy wheels, technic package etc. I am on order for an 997S will receive later this year.

POST 19Original post

There are 43 '02 Cabs on the PCNA pre-owned website, with pricing from $57.5k to $75.5k. Eight priced in the high $50's, 29 in the $60's, and eight in the $70's. A quick look at autotrader.com: Out of 27 '02 Cabs, ten were listed between $55k-$60k, these mostly had 30k-35k mi or so, nine listed at $60k, and nine from $61k to $69k. I understand these are asking prices. I believe the dealer in question will get his $58k for that car, especially given it only has 9k mi. SOMEONE will pay it or close to it. Keep us posted.

POST 20Original post

Add $5k for cabriolet to your price and we're at $59k, same as the asking price for this 9k mi Cab. I think $60k is the right ballpark for moderate mileage 02 cabs. The car is question here sounds like a good deal to me if the PPI checks out. Also, that the color combo is exactly what the buyer is looking for would add value.

POST 21Original post

What is the color combo on this car? You mentioned it's unique. If it's very different than normal, that may be harder to move. Also, is this a use car dealer or a dealer of a different make (mb, bmw etc)? Dont' trust that $58k price, dealer will dial down in a week or two once they feel more motivated to make room. Like I said before, $58k isn't high given it's consition but you could save $1k or so if you negotiate hard.

POST 22Original post

I just drove a 92 cab at McKenna Porsche in Norwalk, CA - triple black, 29k, they were asking $74,000 - I almost choked on my latte. Sweet drive, though...
