Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I went to awaken a 996 turbo which has been entrusted to my care to give it a little exercise and a wash, only to find that the battery was discharged. I opened the bonnet using a battery and put a charger on the car's battery. The alarm went off a couple times and stopped, but then everything went quiet. No lights on the dash, no blinking LED on top of the dash, nothing...the lights on the dash do not come on when the key is turned, but were working fine even with the supposedly dead battery. Other interesting things that happened include the windows going down and the rear wing going up, prior to my opening the boot to recharge. I looked through the owner's manual but couldn't find any reference to this sort of problem. I am assuming that there must be some sort of reset that I'm missing...

POST 2Original post

If you are using an external re-charger for your dead car battery, make sure the contact points are correct. One goes onto the battery, the other goes onto the metal car frame. It will take about 1 day for it to charge, and even then, you will have to run the car for a bit before it's fully charged. You won't be able to start the car, even off the charger, until the battery has charged at least 75%. When summer just started I had the same thing happen to my 996 turbo. The lights/alarm/windows all go crazy, until the car is battery is charged up, and the engine started. Then it'll re-learn and be fine.
