no shavings were discovered, thinks looked fine, the clutch turned out to be "brand new." I have no idea how that happened as i bought the car w.
Leading evidence: '"brand new." i have no idea how' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). clutch clean?...is that a fancy way to say they sprayed it with a brake cleaner?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

hi,
i've got an 03 996 w. about 36k miles. I'm planning on having the IMS done this week by a very reputable porsche shop just outside Chicago, $2200.
Just wondering if anyone had thoughts on the price. I like their work, service and reputation.
Dealer quoted $3100.
thanks everyone, i really enjoy reading your posts.

$2200 isn't bad. Includes all parts (RMSand IMS) and a fresh oil change? Was your car showing signs of a leak?
While the transmission is down, check clutch / AOS, oil cooler and coolant lines. Fuel filter is right there also.
you dont say tip or 6 speed - makes a difference and if you DONT do the "while you're in there" list so this job is much lower coat - you will get to pay FULL price for those when you get to go BACK IN THERE to do them
$2k is a deal - but NOT if corners are cut and cheap additional parts are not replaced
When I had mine done last October, the final bill was $4025, but that included labor, the LNE bearing, an oil/filter change, new clutch/flywheel kit, tranny fluid flush and some other small things.
When I bought my 996 a year ago, I had the IMS, RMS upgraded right away, and I also had some other small things worked upon. Powertech Porsche here in NJ charged me $2100 overall, which I came to know a bit later was around the right price.
Had my IMS, RMS and OIL, filters (air, cabin, oil) done pre-purchase at Dealer in CO and I think bill was $2,300.00 6sp, OEM parts and including LN bearing.
It would probably be more helpful as Ed pointed out if you mentioned tip or manual tranny as tip is more labor intensive. Also would be helpful if you mention parts included (on multiple jobs such as clutch, aos, etc) and if so, OEM parts used or not.
When the flywheel is off, the RMS is a very cheap part and takes no time to change. Changing the transmission oil is a 15min. 14.5min of that is waiting for the oil to drain and another 5min to pump the new oil in. If the mechanic mutitasks (as they should) the extra labour charge shoul not be more than 30min for both of these.
What are the parts you need to do this job yourself (IMS = special extractor and some cam or flywheel locks, and RMS just a puller but special seal driver?) and do we have a tool share program going somewhere on this forum for the DIY'rs? It looks like I have the capability to do this myself but would appreciate talking offline with someone who has just to check my thinking... anyone game just PM me pls.
You may as well bite the bullet and buy the tools. If you want, you can sell them when your through. I posted long ago about building/sharing specialty tools and got beat up pretty bad.
Just buy them. Pelican has a nice complete set and I have seen a few others out there. At least if you buy and keep them, you will have them for your next project or you can help a buddy close to you.
my 03 coupe is being done as i post...at Leith porsche...$2950 new clutch, LN retrofit kit,RMS, new oil and filter, clutch tube and some kind of bushing...109,500 miles
For the people that said their bearing was "ok", are you simply going by the fact that the seals looked good and there was no play in the shaft?
Also, are you guys also keeping your stock bearing and not returning it?
I took mine apart and all look normal. Bearing was a dual row with 200 000 miles. Kept it because my replacement hybrid dual row bearing isn't an LN unit.
Alpine, LOL very funny but my new oil has the engine guarantee on each bottle. Im intersted to see the first Blackstone report on the oil. For taking a sample they actually recommend sucking it up through the dipstick tube rather than from drained oil. I might try that instead because it saves you from drainig it then finding out the oil is fine. I look forward to taking the IMSB apart soon to see its condition.
You don't need to drain the sump. Take a sample from the filter housing, then top. You could R&R the filter at that point for an autopsy too.
But never mind if you don't have an OEM filter assembly.
About to get mine done, was going to do it myself... But I'm a little nervous with cam timing etc.
$2,100 parts and labor for following:
LN engineering dual row IMS bearing
AOS replacement
Rear Main seal (with updated PN)
Plus replacement bolts etc
All in all it'll be about $1,000 for labor... I'm about to be away from home for 3 months so I just need it done. The trusted mechanic will also take a look at oil cooler lines, and anything else that might need attention while he is in there.
Porsche of Honolulu quoted $2,100 for JUST labor on just the IMS, nothing else.
01's were a transition year from what I understand. Some had duals and some had singles. It used to be you could tell which one from your engine serial number (per LN Engineering) but was later found that it wasn't entirely accurate and that is no longer on their site.
yes...the seals are wonderful and the tech said he thinks the play in the bearing is SO small, that it is the play that naturally occurs from the minute spacess in the bearing...there is BARELY ANY play in the bearing at all.....yes i'm keeping the bearing...the RMS was leaking a tiny bit on mine
Reason why I asked that question is you can't necessarily tell the condition of the ball bearings and race without taking the IMS apart. Also per LN Engineering, you need to return the old IMS for there to be warranty coverage on the LN bearing.
hi, the weather finally improved in chicago, i took her in to a very reputable shop, got a good deal; $2100 includes rms. no shavings were discovered, thinks looked fine, the clutch turned out to be "brand new." I have no idea how that happened as i bought the car w. 32k mi (from Loeber). So.... i'm relived this is done. FYI, it's a manual trans.
thanks everyone. i'm glad it's done $2100 is worth it. i was able to put the top down today and take her out. looking fwd to the upcoming PCA events.

Sounds like a good price. I had mine done last week (along w/ RMS) for $2755. Struck me as fair. My '03 C4S has about 55K mi on it. And the IMS bearing they pulled out was ... in great condition. But hey -- peace of mind! Took it to the track literally the next day, drove the crap out of it and had no issues. Work was done by BRRacing in Los Gatos, CA, my go-to guys for everything. Glad I did it. Now I can focus on finding some OTHER way to destroy my Porsche (e.g., lots more track days).
