I certainly tested my oil cooler before I dropped my engine and found my cracked head.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Just checking to see how many have replaced their oil coolers after experiencing oil in the coolant. The jury is still out about whether or not an intermix problem is caused very frequently by a failed oil cooler. I know Jake will say that it doesn't happen very often, but I would love to know more as there have been at least a couple of people that have posted about the failure of theirs. I would love to know how I can tell conclusively that I have a cracked head and not another, ie, oil cooler issue. Thoughts? No sign of coolant in the oil...no loss of power, etc... Thanks! Cheers, Tom

POST 2Original post

You can take the oil cooler off, not too hard to do, and pressure test it. Ther are a couple of videos on YouTube of this. You need to also do this with the cooler heated up as a leak may only show up when the unit is hot. Unfortunately I agree with Jake that this is an unusual source of an intermix. Oil coolers do fail, but not as often as heads crack. I certainly tested my oil cooler before I dropped my engine and found my cracked head. If you do check the heads the cracks are usually visible. I do know of one case where the intermix was caused by a casting flaw that was quite hard to find. But it was repaired and the engine rebuilt.
