Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

41 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi guys, How do you get those lugs to stop rusting! It really spoils the look ... so ugly Cheers

POST 2Original post

a can of paint of your choice and a large piece of cardboard...couple hours of watching paint dry???

POST 3Original post

^^^^^^^ What he said! Painted mine at least 2 years ago with Wurth silver wheel paint, that are still great.

POST 4Original post

I agree rust on the lug nuts detracts from the concourse look, but having to remove all the nuts (and the wheels) discourages me from painting mine. Too much of a PITA.

POST 5Original post

awe....you can remove one nut (bolt) at a time and paint it...no need to even jack up the car and you CAN drive with only 4 bolts on for a day while you wait for it to dry.. NO DE's or high speed cornering, but to and from work missing one bolt will not hurt anything..... just do 4 at a time (one from each wheel) - install and repeat for the next one in line

POST 6Original post

or paint 4 - 8 of them Friday night and let them dry in the house till Saturday morning...and put them back on, do 4-8 more next weekend if you are not driving it, you can remove 2 from each wheel without even jacking up the car, but dont drive it

POST 7Original post

I did mine about two years ago and they looked great for a while...now they're crap again. I guess I should consider a soft lug adapter to avoid damaging them when I'm removing wheels.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

What about anodizing or powder coating it?

POST 9Original post

covered mine a few at a time in rustoleum.. held for over a yr then needed a retouch

POST 12Original post

Bought an extra set of used lugs from another RL member here... stripped them then swapped out the rusted lugs one at a time. One I'm stripping the original lugs. May p-coat these black if I do the same to the wheels.

POST 13Original post

anodized steel.... that's the solution! why didnt Porsche think of that!

POST 14Original post

I used a Sliver Touch-up tube paint, Toyota Silver Color as I recall. The small in-cap brush and a some what steady hand allowed me to paint the head/end of the bolts on the car. That is all you see anyway and the lug wrench doesn't bother it.

POST 15Original post

You can find some high percentage zinc paint at a hardware store. That is probably your best bet going with that as your base coat. Watch out for going to nuts made of metals different than your studs are seeing that lots of metalurgy available these days is from questionable country sources.........

POST 16Original post

Quotes source post: 9077130

Powder coating will not hold up long-term. Better off buy an extra set and spray painting both sets (top with clear coat for extra protection). Then replace individual lugs as necessary....

POST 17Original post

I think the lack of clear coat was part of my problem was well...When I redo them I'll be a little more thorough.

POST 18Original post

OK ... on a serious note aside from painting them yourself there are other options available. I would suggest getting in touch with a local coatings facility and ask them what they recommend. They are the experts and know what works with what application. Most of the corrosion resistant coatings processes are very toxic and contain metals that are not available over the counter. The processes are complex and the results are predictable. For a few bolts they will charge a "minimum lot fee" which may range from $50-200. Some places would love the business and some would rather not deal with a guy and his 20 bolts... so keep looking and you will find a good fit. Along the way you will learn what coatings are best suited for your application... (or get a rattle can at the hardware store and repeat in 1-2 years)

POST 19Original post

i find this thread funny because in the service records of my newly purchased 996, i see 2 visits to the dealer for new lug nuts. 1x in 2002 and again in 2007.

POST 20Original post

I am looking into the same problem with my lug bolts. I was considering these, but a few guys on the 997 Forum said stainless steel would not be a strong (tinsel strength) as the OEM bolts that look like ****! Stainless Steel Lug Bolts

POST 21Original post

I wouldn't mess around buying aftermarket lug bolts, they do hold our wheels on, after all!

POST 22Original post

I have always found it amazing how bad and how quickly these rust... it is just so un-Porschelike. When I bought my car two years ago I took it to my independent for a new clutch and RMS (negotiating points on the purchase). I had noticed the lug nuts were nasty but just added that to the project list along with aluminum gauge rings and bumperplugs. A few days after I got the car home I noticed that all of the lug nuts were clean, shiny and silver. My shop, where I have done business a long time, had just gone ahead and cleaned them up without even mentioning it, or charging for it. I dropped off a dozen Krispy Kreme in thanks!

POST 23Original post

Quotes source post: 9082009

Yes, do not use SS lug bolts. It has a much lower tensile strength than automotive steel (10.9 or better)

POST 26Original post

I had mine zinc coated on my Boxster by my independent Porsche mechanic, has lasted me 5 years so far.

POST 30Original post

BTW, my rusty OEM lug bolt problem will be solved in a week or so. I have some Ti lug bolts being shipped out on Monday!

POST 31Original post

I purchased stainless with my new wheels. Problem solved.

POST 32Original post

In the UK, where corrosion of wheel bolts is severe, Porsche supplier DESIGN911uk < > supplies lug bolts made from chromed SCM440 alloy steel which has corrosion resistance close to 304 S/S and has stress corrosion resistance to grade 440 steel, made by DesignTek in Europe. Cost is about $150 for 20. I've bought many things from them and they are very professional. I fitted a set of slightly longer Design Tek wheel lugs (I've got 5mm spacers) now with nearly 20,000km on them and when I checked them 2 months ago during my major service, no corrosion, galling or cracks could be seen. Very happy with the polished look.

POST 33Original post

Quotes source post: 9090346

Titanium? Dare I ask how $$? Edit, ok I looked it up. $600!!

POST 34Original post

Dresler, I could not have justified a cost of $600. Fortunately, mine were much less than that. A RL'er wanted Ti bolts but didn't want to pay $600. He found a company to make them, but to keep the cost lower, the minimum order was 10 sets. He sold the extra sets. At the end, he sold the last 2 or 3 sets at a heavily discounted price. I was fortunate enough to get a set.

Hi Tim. How many miles on your beautiful 997 S , and what mods have you already done?

POST 37Original post

Quotes source post: 9092922

Steve, I bought it on 9/3/11 with 2,945 miles on the clock. I how have 7,083 miles on her. So about 4,000 miles on 3 months. Mods: Sharkwerks by pass pipes - these replace the stock center (3rd) muffler. It was w-a-a-y too quiet. PSE installed by local dealer - AWESOME! <== me when I fire her up. Ti lug bolts - should arrive next week. That's it so far. Mods I am considering: Porsche OEM Sport Shifter (a.k.a. Short Shifter) Have been thinking about painting the stock Carrera S II Meteor Gray to match the car. While I am not really a painted wheel guy, the Big Red Brakes spew brake dust all over the wheels if you just look at them. Much more brake dust than my '04 996 ever had. Rear Center console - two options: o Painted - I would have Eric at Bumperplugs do this in Meteor Gray to match the car. o Leather - I would have Classic 9 Leather Shop do this in Stone Gray Leather
That's about it for now, but I am sure some other things will pop up and tempt me!

POST 38Original post

So seriously, in what ways is it better than the 996? For those of us with many miles, someday will come when we will need to choose between having to rebuild the engine, or replace the entire car. Your answer is extremely important, as it will influence decisions made by all of us here in the lowly 996 forum at Rennlist.

POST 39Original post

Dresler, I decided your question deserved a new thread, so I started one titled Confessions of a 997.2 owner... or in what ways is it better than the 996?

POST 40Original post

39 posts on this and nobody mentioned chrome lug bolts? I bought these from Boothe Design 8-9 years ago and they're fabulous. The quality is impeccable. http://boothedesign.com/boltsstudslugs.html

POST 41Original post

I just have a hard time considering putting ANY Chrome on my Porsche.
