Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. When my RMS started leaking less than 10k after they had done the seal they offered to redo the job and then installed the new IMS bearing for the price of the part and a couple more hours of labor.

Long story short, I knew it had the clutch replaced but someone forgot to torque down the CV joint on one side and slowly all six bolts came out.

I will say I had another Indy in Detroit recommended so I spoke with him as well, and he had somewhat of the opposite opinion and had seen many IMS failures, but my instinct was that he was flaming the issue.

He told me don't sweat it, if you replace the clutch, then sure, replace it then.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

I changed my oil this past Sunday (I change it every 3400 miles and use Motul 8100 xcess if anyone cares...) and found some black plastic could be seal material in the filter.

And the bitch of it is that the RMS, clutch kit, and IMS seal, were all done 15K miles ago (under CPO) so I don't have anything else to replace other than the AOS.

if they're doing the AOS i believe the engine needs to be dropped and i would at the very least replace the RMS and think hard about the IMS upgrade for resale purposes.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Purchased a 2003 996 Cab, Silver on Metropol Blue. Dealer owned but only 22k verified miles with a good history. Since I have dealer connections I was able to purchase at true wholesale. I purchased about a month ago, but due to some shipping and payment misunderstandings did not take delivery until about one week ago. Picked up the vehicle and was very pleased. Drove home, no problems, took my wife for a drive in the evening after putting about 5 miles on the car, and when shifting there was a loud noise in the rear and then the shifter could move freely without engaging any gears. Was able to coast into a parking lot, and had towed to a local indy the next day. Long story short, I knew it had the clutch replaced but someone forgot to torque down the CV joint on one side and slowly all six bolts came out. No real damage, and with towing, parts, and labor will come in at less than $500, no big deal.
While I had the indy on the phone I asked about the infamous RMS/IMS situation and he said that after 30 years in the business, including time as the lead mechanic at the local P dealer he has not personally had one single IMS failure. Lots of RMS leaks though. He was aware and had heard of the IMS issue but had not personally had a single one. He has owned an Indy shop in Ann Arbor for many years. He told me don't sweat it, if you replace the clutch, then sure, replace it then. I will say I had another Indy in Detroit recommended so I spoke with him as well, and he had somewhat of the opposite opinion and had seen many IMS failures, but my instinct was that he was flaming the issue.
Thought you all might find that interesting.
Yes, I will post pics as soon as I get the vehicle back!!!
Hello...,
About 2 months ago i stopped by the Porsche Shop where i like to go when i have some repairs to do on my Porsche.
I asked the exact same question to my mechanic.
He told me not to worry about it because for more then 15 years he is working on Porsche car he never seen any IMS failure...... but of corse he replaced a lot of RMS.
His recommendation was...stop reading forum drive you car and have fun...i will follow the second one but for sure i will never stop reading forum...
Bye Bye
Robert
Congrats on the car and look forward to seeing it. Before I bought my car I spoke with the local Porsche dealer and he said the IMS occurrences has dwindled down to where they see 2 or 3 a year. My indy said about the same thing but he said they did about 50 IMS L&N kits in the past year and was a good idea to insure reliabllity if you are going to keep the car several years. My car is going in today to have the IMS done. I believe its a combination of many of the bad bearings have already failed, coupled with many people now doing the IMS before failure that has led to a steep decrease in the occurrences.
I love how this thread is shaping up! No seriously! I love IMS threads.
I changed my oil this past Sunday (I change it every 3400 miles and use Motul 8100 xcess if anyone cares...) and found some black plastic could be seal material in the filter. More than I have ever seen before. There had to have been 10 very small black pieces.
The magnetic drain plug also had some very very small metal sticking to it. Now I must say that I dropped the drain plug in the pan, fished it out after all the oil drained and that's how I noticed the small metal material. This pan is only used to drain oil out of my car and my wife's VW Tiguan.
The last blackstone oil analysis I had done showed an increase in Iron in the oil, 18ppm versus the 13ppm average ( 13ppm is the blackstone average for a 3.6L Porsche Boxer engined with 3400 miles on the oil)
SOOOOO!!! Guess where my car is going tomorrow? Yup yup yup! IMS bearing replacement.
And the bitch of it is that the RMS, clutch kit, and IMS seal, were all done 15K miles ago (under CPO) so I don't have anything else to replace other than the AOS.
My local independent scoffed at the IMS issue a few years back when I first asked him. But this last spring they saw three failures and quickly got to know the good people at LN Engineering. When my RMS started leaking less than 10k after they had done the seal they offered to redo the job and then installed the new IMS bearing for the price of the part and a couple more hours of labor.
Hi I just had my clutch replaced and of course with the IMS also, My 996 is 2000 model with 60K miles and got it used.
I dont want to take the chance to have the engine blow up on me. And bite the bullet and spend 1200 to replace it along with the clutch.
My take is, if you plan to keep the porsche for more then 2 yrs. You might want to get that replaced. I know the chances might be low but if it happens, it will be major headache to spend 15K on a 20K car to get the engine replaced.
And if you keep the car for 2 yrs, you will be like spending $60 average a month to replace the IMS. Hey, that is about what you spend on gas now a day.
C'mon guys, the damn thing is still in the shop, I promise to take some pics this weekend and post. By the way the indy called me today to let me know the AOS was leaking too, sure hope I'm not getting hosed on this deal. They found a number of minor things to take care of, and without having the benefit of ownership history myself I'm having to take them at their word.
Supposed to bring home the car this weekend, pics after that I promise!
if i were you i would get a list of what "various" items they are repairing. research parts prices and make sure your not getting screwed around on huge markups. communicate with the shop so they know you are aware of what you will be charged for the said parts.... if you have unlimited funds and don't care then i guess disregard what i said.
if they're doing the AOS i believe the engine needs to be dropped and i would at the very least replace the RMS and think hard about the IMS upgrade for resale purposes.
Porsche mileage between clutches seems vary considerably. I've had one clutch replacement on my 996 in 107K miles.
I drove my 1993 Isuzu Trooper for 252,000 miles before I sold it, and it was still going strong on the original clutch!
I bought my current Porsche with 35k miles and don't really know how the 2 previous owners drove it, but at 57k miles currently, I don't notice any unusual clutch wear...yet. My 60' Bugeye Sprite couldn't get much more than 25k miles
before a new clutch was required.
