Looking at the root cause of the problem, it was the fact that Durmetric provided false information on the recalibration of the top.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

7 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi, I just wanted to share my experience with a broken regulator on my 1999 C4. I currently have 130,000 miles on the car. here goes... I went to close my top and heard a loud noise coming from the rear. I looked around and noticed that my rear quarter window did not close. When I press the button, all i could hear was grinding noise from the motor. After some research, I concluded that it was the regulator that broke. Called up a couple of Independent Porsche Mechs and the quote ranged from 800 to 1200. I picked Stashu in Orlando as they were the first to reply with a quote. They would charge 1.5 labor hour plus the cost of the part. The part itself, sourced thru Sunset was 500 bucks. It includes a new motor and regulator. Porsche does not sell the regulator separately. I did not want to pay that much so I began searching for alternatives. The one I found was with regulatorusa. They can rebuilt your regulator if you send them your original one. The cost was 150.00. I decided to take this route and asked my Mech. to take the part out and send it to the guy. He manually closed the top so I could still have my car while the part was being fixed. A week later, I got my regulator back and dropped my car off at the Mech to put the regulator back in. He put the part back in and everything worked. Now comes the fun part. In taking out the regulator, he had to remove the convertible top. Once he did that, it needed to be recalibrate. The software he has is the Durmetric. Although it says that the Durmetric can recalibrate the top, it is not so. He spent 2 days with the unit and could not get it to recalibrate. He finally called Durmetric and they told him over the phone that the recalibrating of the top is in beta testing. It is NOT able to recalibrate at this time. In the end, he spend 2 working days thinking that he did something wrong with the top when all it was a Software issue. He took it to the Porsche dealer and using the PST, they recalibrate the top and everything works. The dealer charged him 180.00 to recalibrate the top so I offered to pay that part of the bill. All in all, he worked on the car for 2 whole days. As he only quoted me 1.5 hours labor, that was all that he charged me! I am very happy with the service and recommend anyone in Orlando, FL to use Stashu. Total cost was less than 500 and I now have a working window! Sorry for the long post, but I think people with Cabs could find this helpful!

POST 2 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Oh I forgot to add.. When he took it to the Dealer to get it recalibrate, the Dealer (STEALER) told him that the clam shell was broken. It would cost over 1000 bucks. Per the Work Shop Manual, they are to recalibrate the claim shell when you recalibrate the top. My mechanic told them this and they followed his instructions. Voila, working clam shell and convertible top. This is why the Dealer suck here in the Orlando. I would never been my car there.

POST 3Original post

Glad you got it fixed. It's amazing how different the experience is from dealer to dealer. A good independent Porsche mechanic is a wonderful thing to find.

POST 4Original post

Glad you got it sorted, sometimes these things become a PITA! So your Indy charged you for 1.5 hours and he spent probably 2+ days? I hope you made it right with him and shoved a couple of C notes in his pocket and split the difference. I've been on the losing end of simular jobs and generally the customer will volunteer some help. It makes for a win/win!

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Well he asked if I could pay for the Dealer Bill... and of course I said no problem. They were grateful and I will be bring my cars back to them from now on. Looking at the root cause of the problem, it was the fact that Durmetric provided false information on the recalibration of the top. The reason why he spent so much time was he thought the Durmetric was recalibrating when in fact it was doing nothing! He spent hours trying to figure out what was wrong when nothing was broken. If he had the correct tool (PST) then the whole process would have been breeze!

POST 7Original post

My local indy would help me diagnose a problem on my earlier cars for a couple of six packs of good NW local beer, since I always did the labor myself. What a guy! He once came into the shop on a Saturday to bail me out when my wheel bearings failed on my 930 right as I was heading out for a Seattle to St. Petersburg trip and I couldn't locate a proper bearing press on short notice. An all around stand-up guy. Good indies are hard to find- keep 'em happy and return the favor whenever possible.
