Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

5 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

When replacing the wheel carrier... - What other parts should I replace while in there? e.g. will the wheel bearing or lower control arm ball joint be ruined during disassembly? - Any special tools I'll need? Inspecting the front suspension last night, I found a crack in the right-side wheel carrier, where it attaches to the tie rod (see picture). The crack appears to be completely through carrier, so it needs to be swapped out. At a cost of ~$780 for the part, this is turning into a DIY project. I'll be checking the shop manual this weekend, but you can't beat real world experience. p.s. I was experiencing a creaking in the suspension when it warmed up and thought it might have been the upper strut mount bushing or lower control arm ball joint... could the cracked carrier have been the cuplrit? Thanks.

POST 3Original post

you have a good eye to have been able to see this "tiny" crack behind the rotor. What made you look in there ? was there any driving clues about this ? Good luck and let the DIY thread begin.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Last Fall the car started squeaking after a few minutes of driving. Rennlist research indicated upper strut mount bushing or lower control arm ball joint. I was looking over the suspension, prepping to pull the strut when I noticed the crack. Update... my indy mechanic is coming by tonight to look at the issue. He seems to think he can do the bushings, an outer tie rod, and the carrier for four hours @ $70/hour... I figure that's a pretty good price compared to the foreseeable grief that I would be going through.

POST 5Original post

Yeah, at $70/hr and honest/knowledgeable mechanic its a deal in my book
