So after installed I was surprised to say the least how noticeable it truly was.

I guess now is a good as time as ever to start this thread to share the build and a good way for me to keep track of things..
i bought a 996.2 in late May with about 63k miles on the ticker. I bought the car from a private seller in Florida and drove it home to Tennessee. The car drove fantastic but it had some minor issues that needed some help such as old tires, etc.
The car has a long list of items to bring it up to my standards and also correcting some maintenance due to age that needed some attention.
But here it is after the 10hr drive home and 29 mpg i recorded..
The car has list of stuff it has already received but I have more to go..Some had already been done previously but i feel better knowing i did it as the goal is to get everything maintenance related done by end of September. i know it might be a waste of money but i fell better knowing
Items already done:
All Spark Plugs and Coil packs replaced
engine mounts
all new filters (cabin, air, etc..) and oil change switched to Driven
LN Drain plug
Front radiators and condenser cleaned
full clean up of motor compartment and underneath ( this sucked but was needed)
all suspension arms replaced with fresh arms
Ohlins Road and Track coilovers with fresh top hats
Tarret Swaybar Drop links
Apex wheels gt3 fitment with Conti tires 235/ 295 setup .. damn M4S came out a week after
Fabspeed Exhaust.
Rennline pedals - rubber pedal covers fell off so figured what the heck..
Changed manual trans fluid with
Mobil 1 Mobilube PTX 75W-90
LN IMS solution
UAOS
RMS, Clutch, and Flywheel
Aero front bumper and side skirts
Items coming very soon:
all new CSF radiators and CSF Center Radiators when water pump and LN low temp thermostat installed in a 3-4 weeks..
Brakes most likely GT3 master cylinder and Giro upgrade discs with possibly ferodo 2500 pads and stainless lines.. still not 100% on choice but close.. I have 3 bottles of Castol SRF already sitting here as well. (Still considering options)
Items still thinking about or waiting on:
Tarret sway bars
Adjustable front Control arms (GT3 style)
BBS E88's
RPM technik EVO Ducktail or OEM AERO decklid for MK2.. basically GT3 style
Here she is now..
thanks for the kind words.. I try and order most stuff from FCP because if it fails or breaks they replace it for free. I plan on keep the car for a long time so they aren't the cheapest but it's worth it in my opinion for me wanting to keep for awhile. an example is when I did the spark plug and coil swap we had an instant misfire at startup from Cyclinder 2. The cause ended up being a cracked spark plug which they replaced for free.

Solid car and process. Seems like you're doing all the right things here so this car should be a blast to own and drive for miles to come. I've made a lot of similar choices on my build too and am contemplating a center radiator set up as well. Look forward to hearing your thoughts on the set up. Are you doing the work yourself?
Nice, I did the full suspension refresh and coilovers on my car, too. Made a huge difference. If you're on the fence about sway bars, I say do it. I really liked what the Eibach sway bars did for my car.
Keep an eye out for used sets - I got these for a LOT less than new, even after re-barreling the rear.
Nice with the 3PC that width / offset really don't matter and you can make them pretty much whatever you want.
The Tarretts have more adjustability, so if you want to fiddle with it, they would be the better option. Eibach have one setting in the front and three settings in the rear. I have Tarrett adjustable rear toe arms and I'm happy with their quality. I used Power Grid adjustable drop links with the sways.
Nice write up
You will definitely have a fun car with those upgrades.
Look forward to following your build.
I think there was a used duck tail listed on 6speed the other day, I don't know any details on it.
Justin,
Congrats on the 996 and for starting the thread. Looking forward to reading about your build. Your list looks great. Looking forward to the RPM ducktail. Been eyeballing it as well for the last couple of years. Classic look that seems to fit extremely well with the 996. Not to mention huge weight savings. Between you and Chunks, we should have a pretty good idea of how it looks and works.
Long live the 996!
Thanks for the kind words .. i can maybe do that soon.. I'd like to get the high flow cat and header options you offer to complete my fabpseed maxflo exhaust setup currently.. If you'd like to send for testing I can accommodate
for now i will keep the lip the way it is and can always upgrade later.. rather spend the money elsewhere at this time .. but you never know
Oh and I'm also glad i shaved the license plate holes
Well she is loaded up and headed to get the IMS solution and other maintenance stuff done its going to be a long 5.5 hour drive one way and then back thing we do for our cars

Nice! Were you able to grab any photos from the bore scope? I believe that's one of the qualifications that needs to be done prior to install. That's a nice data point to have for records at a particular mileage.
I haven't received anything for him on this except he said no evidence of bore scoring existed currently at all.. I figure he has nothing to lose so he would be as candid as possible.
I have a new in-box GMG adjustable sway bar, and some GT3 adjustable control arms, RSS toe arms for front and rear that I am likely not going to be using. It's possible I will also be listing my tequipment roll bar and GT3 buckets.
Let me know if any of that interests you.
well I just got back from vacation and picked up the car from Ohara Automotive in AR and Im going to made the 5.5 hour trek home.
car runs and drives great with the exception of a weird noise at idle ( sounds like something tapping intermittently on the firewall). Paul, the owner and I are trying to figure out what it is. He had me drop it off at a local shop to me to see if the fix is something simple. If its not he will come trailer it back to his shop to fix but neither of us are too worries considering how well it drives and sounds..
well i figured out the noise as the UAOS hose routing was causing the noise.. You can see from the photo above that the corrugated hose ( think brake booster hose) is suppose to be on top so after swapping them the noise is gone.. Thanks to Skip
@Porschetech3
for the quick tutorial oh how to swap them.. easy 2 min job.
Car runs great and I'm going to update the first post to item completed..
So I went back with the OEM tail lights instead of the depo that came with the car. Not sure why but I think they fit the car well. Also ordered oem euro clear side markers and oem third brake light to replace the LED clear ones that came with the car..
I've been taking the car out every weekend in the mornings for some "spirited driving" and enjoying the car very much now that I feel more comfortable after all the maintenance is done. While i'm out I try to grab a few photos...
Looks awesome. Almost a twin to my 40AE save for the bumper and wheel color. The stance is dialed in just right. Makes me wonder if I should get rid of my tint, especially that rear window is starting to peel....
Thanks man .. yours also look great.. I will probably tint it but no one will probably know it as it will be super light like 75% or higher. It would basically be for UV protection.
The first thing I do when I buy a car is to remove the tint from the front windows. Especially if the tint is so dark that you have to roll the window down just so people can see that you're flipping them off.
I think the legal maximum is 25% down in FL with weird limits on the windshield. My Touareg has a green hue so clear or the lightest available is perfect. The selling point for IR or Crystalline ceramic tints is their ability to block UV without having to be dark. Fun fact for all my polarized sunglass wearers theres absolutely zero distortion when looking out which is why Im doing my windshield when I get back.
Not a bad price for the factory aero front bumper at Suncoast.
Just a bit concerned about the note :
***Note - Porsche does not recommend installing this part without adding a rear spoiler.
I dont think it would make that much of a difference at street legal speeds or even most track speeds, but the Porsche community tends to be very paranoid about aero. You still have a rear spoiler back there from the factory.
I my readings it seams the aero issue comes in around 90-100mph, i can tell u from experience that the full aerokit starts to get light at 135mph. Im probably getting a 55" cup wing for next years hdpe season.
I have have not run any aero on my 02 over its history, but will be putting on a GT3 front splitter this upcoming season to get a little more front end bite. May or may not regret it without a wing, but I will find out quickly.
Never had any problems without aero on a typical 2 mile long track because you don't get above 125 but for a brief moment. Mechanical grip was always good with my set-up. But at a bigger/faster track (Road America) car did get light from 125 to 145 on the straights. Never felt out of control. Just light. While braking from 145, the car was always stable and solid.
Not going to attempt Road America with just the front splitter until I know what characteristics I got on a 2 mile track first. Hope to put on a ducktail and not need anything else on the rear. But I suspect I will need a wing.
Safety at the end of the day is paramount.
Not to get to far off the op's thread but yes the rs is on the table too. Its gonna be an aftermarket wing that bolts to the gt3 uprights. After seeing zbomb on the track im convinced it helps, he is soooo fast
. Also a few others have said how much more control they have over 120mph on a track like watkins as u climb up the to the back straight. My car has never felt bad but it could be better at those high speeds expecially if the track is not dead straight.
Ohlin gt3 r&t with their stock gt3 valving and and spring rates. Car sits at the gt3 height. New gmg adjustable sways r going in for my last hpde day in monday so maybe that will help? If i wasnt on the track i dont think i would consider changing the wing, but i wouldnt do the front bumper without planning to get the wing eventually.
Front lip will help to push the front end down at higher speeds. Rear wing will do the same for the rear. Too much front end downforce and the rear end will become squirrelly at breaking and turn-in of which the back-end can come around in a turn. Too much rear end downforce and your front end will become lighter during high speed straights and causing some understeer push in turns. It's a delicate balance between mechanical grip (suspension set-up and tires) and downforce (aero). Regardless of speed, it starts with mechanical grip first.
Yea its at full tilt.
The thing is, the light rear its not noticable in most situations but its that it could be better some situations. Im not that good of a driver yet and i check my speed at 125-130 because the car just doenst feel as planted as i would like it to be. I had a imsa driver as a coach last hdpe and he said the car feels good at high speed for a street car, but it could be better. He also said i have too much self preservation, so it might just be that im a wuss.
edit:
Yes i agree its a balance and im still working through it. Im also playing with alignment a little. Just reading the race forem here has taught me a lot.
Aaron. I am with you. Self preservation is a good thing! Some guys naturally develop speed quickly, others take a little more time. Took me the first 5 years out of the 14 that I tracked my car to get to the fastest PCA run group. Went hard at it the first 2 years and then "slowed" down to develop a "smoother" approach to inputs and balance. That's when I realized that HP didn't matter as much. The key was carrying more speed and the cars mechanical grip (set-up).
I will gladly participate in another thread on set-up and aero.
I should have expected that youd have that kind of setup lol. Im similar on Feals and Eibach sways but definitely not as fancy as the Ohlins. I notice a slight bit of floating at speed with my setup but I had a little bit of negative rake that I had to adjust out. Havent tested it since the adjustment. When the suspension was stock, it was really floaty over 80 mph. Much better after the suspension mods.
I had always planned on adding the regular GT3 lip to it without any other aero to see how it feels. Just havent gotten around to it. Justins looks nice on his 996.2, so Im even more convinced to do it.
The problem with aero discussions are it’s like a woke festival of people talking about their feelings… it’s so hard to quantify changes in a language that translates.
With my car, running on tracks with 130ish top speed, my mind set is I will take ALL the grip I can get and would run the wildest aero I could find / afford, I have not worried about F to R. The stuff for 996’s is all pretty tame in comparison with modern aero advancements.
I have big hopes to turn the aero on my car to 11 in the future. It will look cool at a minimum.
Jason, I gotta agree. It's a complex topic that unfortunately revolves around aesthetics for most and function for the least number of people, since most don't track their car.
IMHO Jason has developed the best set-up combining mechanical grip with aero. Understanding what he did and what he does for next steps will be good for everyone that wants a car that sticks to the track.
My focus was only on mechanical grip. Now I am looking for ways to enhance my mechanical grip again after 14 years, with a little bit of enhanced aero grip. Once I know where the Oil cooler that's in development by LN will go, I can settle on what to do with the front end beyond a GT3 Splitter and then figure out the rear end.
That car is boss Justin - I’ve followed it for a while and it if you were to look towards hill climb / time attack you would see where my inspiration for what I would like to have comes from.

I had a giant diffuser on my Z that went from the rear suspension all the way back past the rear bumper, it was supposed to create low pressure right above the gap between the bumper and diffuser thus sucking the air out of the pumpkin area. I dont really know thats what google translate said the description was in Japanese. Some of these new diffusers are just amazing looking, heres a photo of the one I had.
Dude… you’re car is mega. Not ashamed to admit I am jealous. There are a couple cars on here that to me, really epitomize the aesthetic pinnacle of this generation.
You, chunk and 85EC come to mind. My high class side lives vicariously through you dudes.
well much appreciated, I'm super jealous of your car and your current track skills my friend.
I can't wait to track it some.. It's been 10 years or so since I've been on track and I miss it dearly.. it used to be a almost every weekend back when i was running BMW's.. I'm also keeping the eye out for possible roller locally .. it helps that I'm in the Wholesale car business
you are probably right it might be easier to buy a coupe.. thanks for the kind words.. I got lucky finding a OEM aero decklid for a non gt3 already painted in my color..
Well i got all 3 CSF radiators, new water pump, low temp thermostat, some radiator hoses and new Coolant tank to all replace while being proactive instead of waiting for something to fail as they will eventually. All the items except the OEM radiators, and water pump are original ones on the car. The water pump was replaced 10k miles ago but time wise it was replaced in 2015.
as i wait for the UIDS and installing the new CSF radiators , I'm stil going to enjoy the car ... some early morning and now late night rips on the back roads are always a fun time..
Finished the Radiators upgrade, water pump, LN Low temp thermostat last night.. lot of work with some help from my buddy.. I struggled to get the rubber air intake piece for the center radiator.. I left it off temporarily until i can figure it out. It's interesting on the ride home last night the coolant gauge was a little lower as it was exactly on the 180 mark versus before it was a little past 180 all the time.
Nice job! Looks like you used the vacuum filling system which must have made this much easier with both radiators off and refilling with all 3. I'm waiting for some warmer days as I also have a water pump and low-temp t-stat sitting near my desk waiting to be installed. FCP also sells the low temp t-stat now btw. Better price and comes with the flange with the t-stat pre-installed. With replacing only those two items I hope I can get away with manually burping the system. I really don't want to purchase a one time use tool. It certainly looks like the upgraded radiators are doing their job! Did you just cruise back home or was the drive more spirited with the temps keeping lower?
about a 40 min high way drive .. semi spirited..I highly recommend you vacuum fill it over manual.. too many problems other wise could happen and not mention hot spots/ air pockets.. It took about 7 gallons to refill it
love the weekend drive time...
I had a few things done to the car since last post.
1. Windows tinted - really just did this to protect the interior from UV so i did 70% all the way around minus the windshield
2. Paint correction and ceramic coated- finally had my good friend at " The Detailed Experience" do a full paint correction and ceramic coated.. He did a phenomenal job. Check him out if you can...
https://www.instagram.com/the_detail...erience/?hl=en
3. New front Lip - Added the GT3 cup front lip
Next up is: finish the suspension ( sway bars, LCA's, alignment and corner balance), Install the UIDS sump when it comes in, and then brake upgrades...
Looks great! You and
@TheChunkNorris
have really showed me how clean a .2 can look. I used to be firmly in the .1 camp, but you guys have me at 50/50 now. I wish my paint was nice enough to warrant a ceramic coating!
Justin great pics car looks fabulous
ive done and or doing everything you have done to your car last couple of things and a trip to Zbomb for my ohlins install and I will be done for now
well i'm going to be the guinea pig for dyno results i guess.
I have M&M racing Header, Catless X pipe and ECU tune coming in this week. i will get dyno results for all that i can so we can put some this stuff to bed.
Since i already have an exhaust, i need to find a bone stock well maintained 996 C2 locally that would like to get dyno'ed. if i can't then the baseline would be my car with the Fabspeed exhaust installed.
Great product choice.
I scored a used set of long tube cup headers for the gt3ish that were made by m&m. My plan is to get their 200cel x-pipe cats and design some dumps. I still want to keep the mufflers for the neighborhood.
U deletIng the mufflers?
no i'm running a Fabspeed Maxflo which I will keep .. i'll work on some wide open dumps later but right now It would be so loud most tracks around here would not let me on track. going to be interesting to see the dyno results for the mods
Smart. FVD is top quality.
Fwiw, according to fvd, due to the porting of the m&m headers, in combination with their software, you will be able to extract a little bit of performance out of the ipd plenum and gt3 throttle body which is an additional plus. Not to mention gaining more low/mid range torque from the m&m headers.
Pretty much. Fvd said you may be able to get a small improvement using the m&m headers due to the porting m&m did. They (FVD) optimizes it with their software. While they didnt give me numbers, my guess is less than 5 hp. But, you gotta pull a Jake FSI rebuild with top end work to be able to maximize the Plenum and tb performance gains. Jake made that point a number of times in his indirect reference to things.
I will eventually test it (dyno) it when i get the m&m headers next year to compliment my fvd 200 cell cats and fvd sport mufflers. Back in 2012 we dynoed the plenum and throttle body on my car with the fvd 200 cell cats and sport mufflers with oem headers. We were running the tuneable revo software that was commonly used back in the day. No gains with ipd/tb. In fact losses in power occurred of which my shop had to work hard in the afternoon to tune it to bring it back to even. We were very disappointed. BUT the ipd/tb did look good and sound good.
Fwiw, I would see what you get from the new exhaust set-up and software before spending 1k on ipd/tb. Fvd will work with you on tuning it. If you do want to try the ipd/tb with the headers. You just have to let them know.
Add: sorry about typos. New phone and trying to type quickly between meetings.
Well I’ve had a few days to process and a few more days of driving to make some comments on my FVD headers, catless x pipe, and ECU tune. My comments are purely speculative until my car can get back on dyno to see the actual results.
1. throttle response seems greatly improved
2. a lot more power starting at 4k rpm.. it feel much stronger up top.
3 did lose a little from 3-4 but not enough for any real concern.
4. sounds great and no drone on highway unless you drop a gear or two and then it’s just a glorious sound.
once I get the after dyno result I will post and hopefully later this week. The delay is my fault as I travel for work and the timing is the issue. More to come soon
You Tube
ok well the results are in .. I finally got the following done and dyno'ed before and after. The before Dyno had to have some type of error as it was way to low to make sense ( 228whp)
Mods done
FVD Header
FVD Catless X Pipe
BMC Air Filter
FVD ECU Tune
Fabspeed MaxFlo Exhaust ( was already on before other mods above)
The dyno was a DynoCom dyno which very similar to a mustang dyno for read out. He said it's about a 17-18% drivetrain loss for his dyno. I'm pretty happy with the results so and the tuner seems to think there is about another 15-20 out there due to the data he saw. He will be purchasing the my genius software to start tuning with it as currently he uses 4-5 others but some cars he is unable to do. The my genius software will allow him more vehicles to tune so he was all in about purchasing the setup/system.

no that was just the three run pull after all mods were complete.
Like I talked about above the baseline dyno run had to have something happen as it was way to low.. I will post the initial three run pulls below any ways so you can see the before with just the cat back fabspeed on it..
Not certain what to make of the pre-mod dyno with the low numbers. Tough to tell what/if there any gains with the mods. However, with each dyno pull with the mods, you can see improvement. Don't know if it's the ecu learning and recalibration during each pull or what.
The M&M headers are supposed to improve the low/midrange power in combination with upper mid range to higher range power improvements of the cats.
Does your butt dyno feel a difference? If so, where in the powerband?
are you running an ipd plenum and throttle body?
I know that when i added my fvd 200 cell cats and mufflers, it added mid and upper range power. I could most definitely feel it on the track.
A few years later when I added the competition plenum and throttle body, my powerband shifted much higher, loosing power in the midrange and moving the power to the top end. As previously mentioned, when we dynoed the addition of the ipd/tb, there no was no power gain on the dyno with the ipd/tb. We instead lost power and had to spend the afternoon reworking the tune to get it back to even. Still not certain how Lee Sibley got any gains. But I will find out.
On the track, the change in powerband was very noticeable at certain turns where i had the power to exit in 3rd before the plenum/tb, after adding the plenum/throttle body, I had to exit in 2nd at higher rpm to catch the powerband. I then had to adjust where I was going to shift to maintain the cars balance. PITA but doable.
I am hoping the M&M headers will provide a gain in power to the mid range as well as provide some maximization of the ipd/tb as FVD suggests. I am going to give the headers a try but not until next year. Still have to add the UIDS and Oil Cooler later this year when they are available.
honestly it feels like a completely different car after about 3600rpm.. way more power up top and feels close to the same below that.
The ECU tune had already been uploaded a week previously. It is normal for the factory ECU wiht or with out tune to learn on it's own during the dyno process. usually by the 3rd pull it has figured out the maximum WHP based off of learning. This is also why most all dyno tuners do 3 pulls standard. He did also say he wants me to come back and get a custom tune once he secures the my genius system for tuning so he can get more out of it.
I listed the only mods that have been done above which doesn't include the IPD plenum or throttle body. I may in the future but not right now.
As for Lee and his car.. remember it's a 3.4 so things are a little different on than ours. That's my opinion..
3600 is great. Mine doesn't begin to really pull hard until after 4200. But the ipd/tb is what moved it up from ~3600. I would like to get it back down with the headers
Got lucky yesterday as Im in Indianapolis for work this week and stopped by the Bell/OMP headquarters near the speedway and walked away with this upgrade
The real treat was I was able to Meet Packy Wheeler who i chatted with for a while.. awesome guy who is a former racer. He was in town to work on the drivers helmets to get them ready for the Indy 500 as that is all he does these days since OMP purchased Bell.
i got lucky as I talked to him for awhile and the helmet i wanted they were out of stock and none were coming in any time soon ..so he said i have the carbon version and I will split the difference in price which was basically 30% off.. Yeah i got lucky.. I don't deserve it either
@De Jeeper
but that was a hell of a deal..
Had my first thing break and CEL at the same time happen door handle spring broke a week ago while out and while driving it to the shop to have them fix it the CEL came on how ironic turns out the rear accordion intake boot had a rip in it and caused the CEL she is back at home now and ready for more upgrades coming soon
I found a good deal on a used slightly damaged CF console. It looks like the idiot was jabbing at the lock for years and his aim was ****.. he must have used it a lot as the epoxy had chunks missing and needed some TLC thank god for good friends that do this stuff all the time the repair turned out great
Does Chris do CF repairs on any interior parts? My CF steering wheel has the usual cracks and I would like to get it fixed or buy a replacement at some point.
the repair he did for me was an interior part ( center console) I would reach out to him directly for more info .. you find him on instagram or FB ...

So I have not installed the UIDS yet as I'm still waiting for others to post about their experience.
In the meantime I had a dome light bulb go out last week so i went to replace it and who ever changed it out previously didn't know what they were doing. They had cracked the lens by prying on it and prying on the black plastic. all but two clips were broke so i just ordered a new lens and new black plastic piece to the tune of $220. I've come to realize age on the plastic is a guarantee break when working on 20 year plastics. I think for now own i will just replace all the plastic pieces as i go.. Just my rant for the day
There is a bump protector that is missing on there. It should have come in the package. It's a small rectangular block that bolts to the bottom rear center, right behind the drain plug. Below you can see it on mine. I think a cover would be a good idea for street driving but wonder if it would have an effect on cooling with the fins being covered up from air flow.
I only trust one guy.... The detailed experience and ask for Chris Johnson .. Tell him Justin with silver 911 sent you.. he is the absolute best.

While waiting on the rest of the suspension stuff to come in I did some research on headlight and taillight upgrades.
I upgrade both with some new bulbs from
Retrofit Source
.
I was tired of how crappy the standard halogen reverse lights and wanted to try to get more light also out of the headlights.
I found the following are easy upgrades in the link above that are all laid out for you in the 996 platform.
I upgraded to the Philips DS2 85112 XV Gen 2 bulbs. They definitely made a difference in light output for my HID's. The color is a little more white than the stock bulbs and produces more lumens which can be seen in the video testing
HERE
And before you ask i didn't get a before and after of the headlights but it was a noticeable difference for sure.
The reverse lights are a gigantic improvement over the OEM. .. you can see the difference below .. sorry for the bad photos as they really don't do them justice.
OEM light
GTR Bulbs
Here is the packaging .. they also come with some adapters to fit with the kit if you use the website and type in the vehicle information.
Did you do the reflectors as well, or just bulbs? I had done the bulbs in mine but found it didnt help much The reflectors made a huge difference!!! Theyre on a par with modern light now
I assume you mean the projectors as mine is the bi xenon/hid? I didnt replace the projectors and still had a noticeable difference.
I may up the wattage by modifying the oem ballast from 35w to 46w which is suppose to be a huge jump in lumen output.
Well its been a bit so I thought I would update this thread on what all has been done.
finally was able to start on the brakes.. I did Girodisc front and rear with akebono street pads. I also did Spiegler lines and Castrol SRF fluid flushed and bled. Much improved feel and ready for the track with a simple pad swap.
It was the perfect time to add the joe toth dive planes Ive had for a bit (nice pieces)! It was the perfect time because I did to replace the cup splitter due to some **** poor judgement on my part leaving a gas station in a hurry.. I also ended up bolting the cup splitter in instead of using the plastic fasteners good times 😂
I also got the elephant arms and camber plates installed. Corner balance and alignment came soon after.
No, I meant the reflectors (the reflective bowl that sits behind the bulb) - this is the part of the projector housing that degrades the most over time, as the reflective material becomes non- reflective.
I want to update the list since some things have changed and some things coming soon..

One of my favorite cars on here and you're doing all the right things. Everything is tastefully done and all upgrades have purpose. Curious about the new wheels you have in mind! Also, I feel like I've read folks love the Numeric shifter but complain about the cables which cause some added noise - not sure how or why.
thanks a bunch.. you will just have to wait for the new wheels i guess
I've heard a similar thing about numeric cables also.. mostly it's been an install issue or need some tweaking.. here is a good thread for that.
HERE
That rubber plug for the shifter cables. No fun for me and hence will keep stock cables until justin offers to swap them out for me.
Your car is nicer than I care to admit bro. But you gotta get your lights all working at same time… weird.
I don't know what I'm more excited about .. finishing the house renovation or getting my car back as it's been gone about 4 weeks (stored at my buddies house due to renovation)
This week it will be back!!!!
Finally able to work on the car again after the home renovation completed and getting my garage back…
for this project thanks to
@TheChunkNorris
for the new steering wheel and shift **** and boot
That's a nice combo. I recently learned that the oem 3 spoke wheel was available in a smaller diameter from factory. It was a pretty rare option. I've only seen it once on a 996 GT3.
me too man.. the home reno killed my car time LOL.. Next up is the ballast upgrade for the OEM HID's. I have all the parts to increase the wattage safely..it's a major output increase.
Ok, I need to know more about this. I love doing lighting upgrades to my cars. I assume you are swapping to Morimoto projectors and then putting 55w ballasts in there? Would love to know your exact parts lists and how you plan to execute. My current HID's are in excellent shape, but I want to do something like this with new Osram CBI 5K bulbs. My Lasfit LED's are slightly more white/blue than my stock HID bulbs. That could also just be the age of the HID bulbs in the car, but new HID bulbs always put out more usable light.
Since my projectors are in great shape i'm just going to upgrade the output of the ballasts for now.. down the road i will change the projectors..see link below and the PDF attached for all the stuff you need
https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...build-log.html
Not sure if the list if going to grow much more as I'm seriously contemplating selling the car..
Thoughts on putting it up for sale???

Well damn. Decisions need to be made but unless you have to I'd hold onto it. It probably one of the better executed builds on here. Perfect blend of form and function. If someone picks this up they will score big.
Wait, what?!? You can't leave! Unless you are getting a much cooler car that will make you smile more than this one... The grass is always greener... until it isn't.
There doesn't seem to be anything on the catalog about a smaller steering wheel, but the RS version (M004) could be it. It's available for $3500 from
Auto Atlanta
.
Thanks for the kinds comments ..
Don't have to sell it but I'm looking to upgrade and I'd hate for this car to sit outside or worse to be driven less than it already is.
Looking through your list, it looks like you and I have done similar mods to our cars.
I can't imagine getting rid of mine now.
Not because of the money spent, but because it feels like the perfect car to me now.
Well, since it is a 996 and the IMS issues, ugly headlight, headlight switch always bad, crappy shifter, bore scoring potential, most hated 911, black wheels, Boxter parts all over it, and then you put those black wheels on it...I will raise the $996 offer to $1,996...and can clear the garage in a day...
You have made a fantastic car...I very much appreciate the time and effort you have invested in show casing your build...You have helped me, and I am sure others immeasurably...Thanks again...
PS: When are you going to tell us what our next projects will be?
Justin saw my car the other day and realized our town was just too small for 2 996’s. This, after more than a year without crossing paths in a town of about 40,000.
love the offer LOL ... thank for the kind words and I'm not completely set on selling it.. If i do it most likely will go to Bring a trailer because of the condition the car is in.
Had the car corner balanced again and alignment done as I had to make a few height adjustment and some caster changes more tire caused it 😂
Im digging the changes although slight it makes a good impact.
So i'm debating on running XP6 instead of XP9 for track event coming up and I think I have to run a larger napa filter (1258 vs 1348) for my IMS solution.
@Charles Navarro
can you confirm that this is what is recommended when running XP6 with the IMS solution?
We usually recommend XP9 but I know Jake recommends XP6 for his engines. I would say that if ambient air temps are high or oil temps are regularly above 240F, for sure the XP6 is probably a safe choice. However, I do prefer using a billet washable filter with a higher micron rating for track use.
Good points .. Can you recommend a billet washable filter to use with the IMS solution? Is it this one on your site?
https://lnengineering.com/billet-was...r-adapter.html
Also is their a good napa filter option also or alternative option? the filter above is not only pricey but I'd have install and uninstall it every time for a track event.
Here is the longer filter we have been using:
https://lnengineering.com/replacemen...r-adapter.html
I would still recommend the billet filter for the track as you really should be changing the oil before and after every track event.
fhanks for the filter info yes I will change it after every event for sure but is their an advantage of the billet filter over the larger Napa 1068 filter? Is it more flow when using XP6?
Makes sense.. Thanks
@Charles Navarro
. I'm going to run XP9 next weekend and just use the 1068 with it as the ambient temps will start around 90 and decrease throughout the sessions since the track day starts at 5pm and ends at midnight..
[QUOTE=Justin76;17632956]I guess now is a good as time as ever to start this thread to share the build and a good way for me to keep track of things..
i bought a 996.2 in late May with about 63k miles on the ticker.

Some thoughts and updates… after knocking the rust off on track I started to realize how good the brakes really are on track. The PFC 11’s performed great and would highly recommend them. Combined with the giro discs and castrol SRF fluid is was damn good.

also the new tires were better than expected for 200tw tires… I have a lot of rust to continue to shed off but car felt planted and confident for what it is… more tuning to come
also the wheel and tire combo is fire
Update....
I was at a local car event and a guy came up to me and to tell me that he had a 2003 996 C2 and just sold it, but had some left over parts. I was not interested in much of it but he did have a brand new underdrive pulley kit still in the box from FSI / LNE. He gave me a ridiculous deal on it I couldn't refuse.
So after installed I was surprised to say the least how noticeable it truly was. I guess I shouldn't be so surprised as I remember reading awhile back that Jake, and many others, had said it was one of if not the best single mod you can do for performance for a bolt on. Well he said something close to that.. I highly recommend it for sure!
This is one that I'm referring to
https://lnengineering.com/flat-6-inn...ft-pulley.html
had to get the car out before we get ice and snow tomorrow night. Here in TN 3-4 inches will shut things down for a 3 days or so..
good day overall as I went for a drive after a small cars and coffee event to show the new lotus emira and aston DB12
Now Im just patiently waiting for new parts to get here to install before spring track and other events soon..
Well its been a few since I posted so I wanted to provide an update my car will have a New owner next week and its bitter sweet its going to a good friend and I know it will be taken care of very well she was fun while I owned it and look forward to seeing the updates from the new owner thanks everyone on here for the information and some good laughs
Hey all. Joe here.
I am the new caretaker of this beautiful 996.
Justin has done an amazing job with it, and I am looking forward to further upgrading and refining it.
First on the list were Recaro Pole Positions in Pepita.
I also received a large box of goodies from Rennline for the interior.
4 point roll/harness bar will be installed in a few weeks.
I absolutely love this car! The balanced, analog experience is so enjoyable. I am looking forward to getting it into the mountains soon.
pretty sure I judged that 3RS at the concours at the VW plant, congrats on the 996, at least my C4S and I will be able to keep up with you on our next drive out.
Some of you reached out on what my replacement is so here you go
Ill be back in a PCar again for sure but this will do in the interim..
take care of Joe as Ive known him over 15 years and he is a solid dude and avid car enthusiast
Joe Im loving the progress and Ill come see you in Chattanooga soon to catch up
