Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.

0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.

Suggestion

I would estimate that the cost to do this is at least in the 6-8 K range due to relatively exotic donor parts and speedshop/raceshop labor, could run 10 -12.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Question, Is it possible to change the rear gearing either final gear or one of the short gears to make the car have better acceleration instead of top end. Can this be done in the tip or does it have to be a manual only? Thanks for your input on this.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

ok has anyone actually done it what were the results?

POST 5Original post

An Austrailian company named Alpins makes both close ratio tranny gears and several R & P gears for the 996 Gertag transmissions. Both G-Box and Calif. Motorsports carry them. They're not cheap, about $3k for the R & P plus installation. They're in 2 996 race cars in So Cal (cup ratios) though I've never driven either unfortunately...

POST 6Original post

technically yes you could do something like this in an 02+ tip, but you'd need to find the correct ratios, which isn't just a matter of simple machining in a planetary gearset. Whether or not it would be smart, cost effective or reliable is an entirely different question. I would estimate that the cost to do this is at least in the 6-8 K range due to relatively exotic donor parts and speedshop/raceshop labor, could run 10 -12. Car will basically be unsaleable as well, so you'd better like that car! There are 996 and 997 turbo owners who have swapped out ratios with SL55/SL65, head over to 6speed's turbo forum and do some creative searching on tiptronic mods Then go to their for sale section (or ours here) and trawl for a take-off supercharger, that'll raise top speed (which is not really gear limited in the 6speed or tip in the NA cars) AND get you that acceleration you've been wanting.

POST 7Original post

what is a better ratio for tracking 4.0 or 3.77?

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Oh ok makes sense I'll have to think about that I don't like the idea of the car being unsellable if I do gear ratio mod htny. Thanks for your response On another note Tbred911 has a great question I would think it depends on the track if there is a lot of curves or more straightaways but I don't know too much about tracking.
