Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Replace with new belt' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check #1 plug' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

You can try removing the serpentine belt temporarily then check for noise it's a simple check.

I will check the plugs on friday, is it possible to replace them without dropping the exhaust?

All you need to do is check tightness till you find a loose one then maybe pull it and clean it up.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

i know im very picky when it comes to cars. I notice every little noise, squeak or grind. I must inherit it from being an aircraft mechanic. It is in sync with the engine rpms. after inspecting under the car for the noise it is coming from the drivers side valve cover area.
it almost sounds like a valve or piston tapping but from above the engine is sounds like a squeak... im not sure how the pistons are numbered but it sounds like the most aft piston on the drivers side under the exhaust manifold.
any ideas on what is could be?
yea its not coming from the serpentine belt area.... ill have to get a hold of a stethoscope.. its coming from right behind my exhaust manifold if your looking up from under the car...
yea, year/model
oil level, last oil change, oil used, miles on car, happens warm/cold, ever goes away?
could be many things - like us trying to give you a haircut over the internet.... we will try though
2000 996 w/ 97k , mobil 1 5w30, it is not as loud when the engine is cold, it gets louder the longer i drive and the engine is at operating temperatures..
This could be a loose spark plug. This is a common problem in these cars. Mine sounded exactly like a belt squeak and knocking. The culprit plug was so loose I removed it with only my fingers. The rest were barely tight.
Mine appeared to be the original plugs.
How many miles do you have and are they the original plugs?
i was going to replace the spark plugs soon, i dont know the last time they were changed.... that sounds like a great place to start. what plugs to you recommend?
Calm your nerves a little since high performance engines do make noise unlike granny's car.
The spark plug check is a good thing to do. A 71 camaro SS with comp race headers would always loosen a couple of bolts then sound like lifter clacking but it was exhaust leaks at the head not vavles related.
Take your time and enjoy it. You can do the plugs with out pulling exhaust. All you need to do is check tightness till you find a loose one then maybe pull it and clean it up.
Is that 5w-30 a typo? If not change the oil to at least 0w-40 and many run a quality brand full synthetic 5w-40 or even 5w-50. Frankly it sounds like the oil's to thin.
If the noise still present after the oil/filter change, you'll have to pinpoint the location of the noise. Once you know where the noise is coming from the what may be easier to figure out.
When you change the oil dump the oil filter housing oil into a clean drain pan and see what you can spot in the oil. I don't expect anything untoward but it never hurts to check.
Sincerely,
Macster.
the spark plug does seem like a decent culprit... the squeak could be air escaping from the cylinder... seems odd to me that a spark plug would loosen up, ill post an update when i get a chance to get back under the car tonight. thanks.
I notice that the squeak/tick does not occur during my short 2-3 mile drive to work everyday, it only happens after i driving for a decent period of time or if i start to get a lead foot.
I tried that and the squeak seemed to go away. So I replaced with new belt. Came back. Only after replacing spark plugs did it go away.
Mine at first would come and go. With time it will squeak almost all the time, and get louder.
Update: I pulled my old plugs out.. wow they were very loose and very old.. i got some new ones coming tomorrow from pelicanparts. the dealer tried to sell me plugs for $20 a piece. I got the same ones from PP.com for $8.75. the dealer is such a rip..
