Suggestion
I would let the dealer swap it out to cheak if that is the problem before going into tranny fluid checks, (other then checking the level).

Suggestion
Once you drop the tranny pan/drain fluid.....if the trans flluid is silverish...most likely time for new tranny, if looks clean/brownish, refill with approved fluid and take it for a drive.

Suggestion
i think you may take the car to have a transmission oil change first, if the symptoms still there, then you may go to the dealer to do a TCU reset, or buy a new updated TCU.

4) buy a new or really good gearbox oil cooler (this cooler has water running through it and cools the box down if the oil cooler is blocked you will be hard pushed trying to unblock it with blasting water or cleaner through just replace the whole unit for what it costs)

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My problem solved already with the transmission oil change.
Hello,
My father recently picked up a great deal on a 2001 911 Carrera however the deal came along with an issue. We knew about it before the purchase so we were prepared for it however we can't seem to find the problem. This is my dads dream car. We picked it up yesterday and he was so happy to bring it home however I want to do my best and fix it for him because he's been a tremendous father for me and I really want to get this thing on the road, registered, washed and waxed for him asap.
So here's the issue.
I plugged into the OBDII and it gave me 3 similar codes. P0733, P0734, and P0735. These indicated "incorrect gear ratio" each for gears 3, 4, and 5 which are the last numbers in each of the codes. The dealer mentioned looking at some type of shifting module, to try and swap it with a new one and seeing if that helps at all. Problem is, I'm a virgin to working on 911's and I'm not sure where or how to check this or if this is even the problem. I took it for a ride and it runs fine when it's cold however when it warms up, gears 1 and 2 still pull hard but when it switches to 3, 4, or 5 it slips significantly, not allowing the car to pull any harder. I haven't gotten it onto the lift yet but plan to do so as soon as I get home from work. I'm trying to do some homework here and hopefully get some ideas so that I can approach this car with some sort of knowledge as to what the problem may be.
Please help me out here guys and gals, I really want to make my old man a happy old man.
Thanks and hope to hear from you soon.
Marian
ps let me know if I'm in the right forum, i posted in the wrong one earlier by accident.
Nope your in the right forum.....you may want to change/inspect the transmission fluid, see if that helps. How many miles? Worst case scenerio a rebuilt/used transmission costs about 3000.

Full factory manuals and part look up (PET6).
Once you drop the tranny pan/drain fluid.....if the trans flluid is silverish...most likely time for new tranny, if looks clean/brownish, refill with approved fluid and take it for a drive. The tiptronic trans in these cars are fairly strong but if it was abused its like anything else...time to replace.
The TIP module is in the back under the (check leftside first) passenger seat. I would let the dealer swap it out to cheak if that is the problem before going into tranny fluid checks, (other then checking the level). It's a simple plug and play.
However - I don't like the sound of that 'runs fine when cold - has slipping problems when warmed up'. I've had that on other cars and it always ended up as a rebuild. A check ball there - a piece of washer here... (sigh)
This doesn't sound like a programming issue to me. The only other thing I can think of is pulling the battery off for a few minutes and then going for a drive to see if the reset/learn mode solves the issues and if the codes come back up.
HELLO try these things first before you spend any serious money !
1) check all tyre pressures are correct
2) check that the rear tyres are the same size profile etc & check that they have equal wear on both rear tyres
3) same as 2 only this time you are checking front tyres make sure same equal wear (if one tyre is brand new & the other is worn you will have problems)
4) buy a new or really good gearbox oil cooler (this cooler has water running through it and cools the box down if the oil cooler is blocked you will be hard pushed trying to unblock it with blasting water or cleaner through just replace the whole unit for what it costs)
all the above especially the gearbox cooler can cause the gears to slip when car is warm do you get the flashing lights on the dash 4rth & D leds flashing ? I speak from experience do search in google 996 tiptronic flashing d light read my post lol.
You are a great son, and i respect you budy!
For your cars' problem, i have experenced the symptoms you described in my 2002 Tiptronic c4s. my case was, those symptopms happend only at while i was driving my car with manual mood. and after i do my research, I think thats the TCU problem due to the incorrect value reading from dirty and hot temperature oil. i think you may take the car to have a transmission oil change first, if the symptoms still there, then you may go to the dealer to do a TCU reset, or buy a new updated TCU.
My problem solved already with the transmission oil change.
