I have looked for a Carrera 4 specific used car check list but there are I know of several for other 996 models and one of these would be a good starting place.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I originally joined this forum looking for a 964 but a friend of mine may be selling his 996 Carrera 4 Convert with 12,000 miles for a very good price. I am just wondering what are the type of things too look out for with these cars?

For more 996 specific issues various magazines: Excellence in the USA and GT and Purely Porsche and 911 & Porsche World published in the UK have run buyers guides detailing the finer points of evaluating these cars.
I have looked for a Carrera 4 specific used car check list but there are I know of several for other 996 models and one of these would be a good starting place.
Then you can add what you pick up from reading the buyers guides.

Don't be too much in a rush. Part of the Porsche ownership experience, part of the fun, is shopping for your next Porsche. There are alot of cars to choose from so don't worry about missing out.

Advice on 3.4 litre 996 Purchase
I forgot about Total 911 in my mag. recommendations.
Total 911 highly recommended.

Welcome to the world of IMS..... At 12k, she's just a puppy and this gremlin may not have emerged.
You didn't mention the year...but even at the low miles, the age may be enough to fatigue the coolant overlow: If its white its alright, if its yellow then.... (Mine started leaking about 2 wks after I got it..Check the forum for the DIY fix.)
In any case, a qualified PPI is essential.
I will underline the QUALIFIED word in qualified PPI. Some porsche dealer really go over it too fast. Ask for a full check same as CPO check list, compression check, alignment, pressure test cooling system
money well spend I think.
And don't be emotional... there are tons out there. if you see something you don't like, just pass.
