I've got to admit that it took some patience on my part to figure out how to get it installed so that it was aligned properly and in tight - but once it's in you'll find it's a rock solid seat that follows the same design principles as a race seat - very safe.

I do not have experience with the rear facing seats, but I use a Britax Roundabout forward facing model (with the base removed).

Gents,
Good News!!
My wife is pregnant (our first) and I need to prepare the 996 for the arrival.
I have done a search and read quite a few threads on baby seats in our cars. However, I'd love to hear what seats you guys are using and why you like them.
Thanks in advance for the info!!
(Ben, don't tell me to go buy a minivan. It ain't happening.
)
I have no info to give (mine is now 16)
I simply just would like to extend my congratulations to you. It is the grates joy in a mans Life
Best wishes to you and your wife
Congratulations Ray! That's great news. I do not have experience with the rear facing seats, but I use a Britax Roundabout forward facing model (with the base removed). For best results, remove the reart seat base and back, it will provide extra room (and beleive me, it will be appreciated).
Here is some details.

I can only give advice for a 5 year old and a booster seat. But since I am the law guy, the safest place for an infant in the rear center. But with our cars, there is only a hump. So your next to best option is to put your infant in the rear back right seat. That's about all you need to know for now. You may want to get one of the sun-shields for the window or get the windows tinted.
Never rule out the mini-van. My wife swore she would never get one and didn't do so until our daughter was 5 years old. Now she is regretting she didn't do it earlier. Honda Odyssey's are hard to beat.
And most important, congrats on the good news and hope all goes well. John L.....
Congrats. Babies are a breeze in the 996.
We used a Graco rear facing infant carrier, then switched to a Recaro Young Sport seat. We're about to do the process all over again in September. I'm hoping to move my toddler into the seat behind me.
9 months is a long wait for the baby... and I waited until my (oldest) son was about 2 before putting him in a car seat in the rear of the 911. My little one has to wait about another year before I'll put him in.
There are lots of good recommendations of car seats that fit the rear well - I decided to get a booster seat (it uses the factory belts to retain the child) and then wait until he was big enough that the belt would cross his chest at the right place (and also wait until he understood that he can't try to wriggle out of the belt).
If you get the airbag deactivation switch, you can use a seat in the front seat. That will give you lots of room, but make it harder to take adult passengers.
That any help? Or just confuse you more?
WHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAAHHAHAAHHAHAHA oh man ray fantastic news. keep me posted will ya? i don't know man i smell a honda element in the near future (i'm actually a fan of those units)
Hahhahaha.....
The Honda Element. That's the one with the rubber floor right??
The rubber floor may be good for kid vomit, but I'm not driving around in a box with 4 cylinders at the wrong end.
I'll pass......
My daughter is now 9 months old and have never put a foot or drwly dirty finger in my P-car.....she will not enter it until she is over 1 yr and about 22 lbs or up.....you will never forgive yourself if something happens because you needed to drive your Porsche...hence when you become a father your life is officially OVER!!!
But I hate to say it because it sounds so cliche!! There is nothing better than that teethless drewly smile and those teary eyes looking at you when she wakes up and you are not there!!
About a minivan? NEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEVVVVVVVEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRR!!!!!!
I am getting ride of my BMW X5 next month and I already have a brandnew Escalade sitting in the driveway dwarfing my X5 in every sense of the way.......who care about 8miles per gallon...I love those cooled seats!!
Ray, Congrats on the big news.
While I can't offer any help I believe the previous owner of my car had a child seat and air bag deactivation done for a short while on my car. He's a member here if you want his info PM me.

Ha! My 4-year-old threw up in my 996 just a few weeks ago. Luckily it was contained to her car seat, the right rear floor mat (hosed it off!), and the hard black plastic of the front passenger seat. I don't think she'd even have cared if it was in her mother's car, but she looked truly horrified at having done that to what she calls "our" (mine and her's) Por-sheh.
I felt bad for her and laughed it off.
I've ridden my KTM maybe 4 times since the birth of my daughter 20 months ago. I barely get to drive my 993 because it doesn't seat 3 easily. But I don't care.
You'll have plenty of time to do the things you list above later in life. If you're like me, you'll want to be with your little one as much as you can. Seeing her little face when she looks up at me is better than anything I've experienced in life.
Congratulations.!
I can't comment on the baby seat, but as far as a booster seat for when they are older, I've got my 4year old in a Recaro Vivo (unfortunately, it doesn't come in speed yellow, so he has to do with red).
Glenn, did you have any fitment issues with the Recaro Young Sport in your 996? I'm thinking about a 996tt in the future and want to purchase a car seat that will fit now.
I've got to admit that it took some patience on my part to figure out how to get it installed so that it was aligned properly and in tight - but once it's in you'll find it's a rock solid seat that follows the same design principles as a race seat - very safe.
Congrats. Holding your newborn in your arm is priceless.
BTW, I drive a Honda Element. You'll be surprised how much rear seat room there is and when he start flinging food you'll wish you have urethane floors.
All, if I am reading this right, some of you have been able to fit a rear facing seat (for a new-born to 12mths - heck I don't even know what the categories are, newborn to 3mths/6mths, etc??) into the back seat of a 996/7? I am faced with the (nice) dilemma of a newly pregnant wife and a FL 997 4S on order, baby and baby coming about the same time (November). Given the car is only a weekend thing for getting out of the city, and not an actual means of transportation, I am trying to rationalize staying with it versus the more practical but less fun route of M3/RS4. Any thoughts appreciated. Mainly, can I get a newborn in safely into the back of a 997 and have the lady in the front?
Try a search on "baby" or "infant" in the 996 forum, there is a ton of information. The infant seats are typically in the front with the airbag disabled, but I have seen at least one (from memory) in the back.
Yup, I've had my Graco Snugride rear facing seat in the back of my 996 - it fit fine if you don't use the base.
We had to move the passenger seat forward a couple of inches, but that wasn't much of an imposition. Visibility was not impaired for me and may wife didn't lose that much leg room. It helped that she's only 5'2" though.
We'll be doing the routine all over again in the fall and will have the joy of putting my front facing seat behind me and the rear facing seat behind my wife.
996fourEss,
I too am running into the same requirement. My 8 month old son is not in the infant carrier anymore and is now in a child seat that has to be rear facing till he is 1yrs old and 20 pounds. There are a bunch of threads on child seats that I went through, but not much on rear facing ones. I bought the britax roundabout, took out the rear seats, and it still does not seem to fit right. Mostly due to the seatbelt being very difficult to adjust. But it can be done. The infant seats will be easier to install, and will fit, but the front seat will have to be so far forward that it might not be able to fit an adult in the front. I am still working on getting the seat in the car so I will feel comfortable with it. The only reason I got rid of my boxster S was to have room for a child seat.
I may have to wait a couple of months before I can get my boy in the car with us. Either way, other seats may work better for you. Dont cancel the car
Thanks johnnyq. exactly what I was looking for. Think I get a little more space with the non-cab so that will help. Main thing is being able to convince the lady that the car is sensible and usable three up. Hard to do if I can't even get the newborn kid in the car until he/she is a year old and able to sit in a forward facing seat, so appreciate the advice.
BTW, is that your CL in the picture as well? How do you find that after stepping out of the 996?
No it is not. That picture was taken at the mercedes dealer I bought the car at. I have not taken any pics of it at home yet. The only mod I have done that you would be able to see are clear sidemarkers. My daily driver is a 05 Navigator. So the 996 is a joy to drive after that thing.
Good eye though, that cl was sweet. Although my favorite car there was the maybach 57 they have in the front.
John
I used the Graco Snugrider as a rear facing seat up to 20lbs, then switched to a front facing Recaro young sport. There was no need to more to a different configuration in moving from front to rear facing and the fit was fine.
Sorry for bringing up an old thread, but I have a question that's bugging me: Is it a mistake to buy a Boxster S knowing that I will be having 1-2 kids in the next couple years?
The only other option besides a Boxster S that I'm considering is 911, but didn't want to spend more money on it at this point in time.
Also, keep in mind that this will not be our primary vehicle. The primary vehicle will be able to hold the entire family, so it seems appropriate that the 2nd car can be a toy. But I'm just thinking as practical as I can with regard to the "toy" car.
I was originally going to buy a Boxster as a "toy car" and my wife pointed out that if I did that then she (and the kids) would not be able to drive with me. Buying the 996 was her idea. I love my wife. You need your wife to have the same idea.
No, it's not a mistake.
1) You are counting the chickens before they hatch (sorry... I know they're "kids"). Once you have your 2 kids in the next couple of years, THEN you can revisit your decision and opt for a different car. Otherwise, you have 2 + years to enjoy the car. I shuttle the kid in the Boxster S once in a while to daycare vs taking the X5, A4 or 911 (I was thinking of using the "Baby Bjorn" on the motorcycle, but wouldn't want some nosey busy body calling Child Protection Services on me
). I give the kid options depending which color card the kid picks up/points to first...
2) You already have a primary family mobile. But still, see #1 above where you are counting your chickens before they hatch. In 1 or 2 or 3 or 4 years, your situation may change which may change your family car needs into something else. I.e. - if you have a 4 door sedan family mobile now, what if for some reason you end up with 3 or 4 kids? Thus, you will need to switch into a minivan. BUT, you wouldn't buy a minivan NOW would you?
Either way, your wife will probably tell you what to do anyway, so why bother asking the question?
....just kidding....
Here is my take. While they may be cute, kids suck for the first 9 months. They absolutely Rock from 18 months through 6 years. After that, it's a slow decent until they hit 13 then focus on flying under the radar until the buggers hit their 20's at which time they are allow to reenter your life. Im just kidding, sort of.
You'll want the infant sized seat initially and it should be mounted on the right front passenger seat. Eventually you will graduate to a toddler sized one which you can then start to put in the back area. As infants, you want them close by to deal with this and that. The Grayco ones are a nice fit.
I cherish every moment with my kids - even when I'm crabby and tired I realize that they're only this age once and you'll only be the center of their world for a short time and should enjoy it while you can.
You've said it perfectly! I wish more parents realized that. I try to convey that exact message to them during visits with their kids. Believe me, it goes by all too quickly. Now when I'm tired and crabby, only the cat appreciates me.
Yup - it took me a while to realize it and my wife "got it" before I did.
Sure, not every day is perfect, but I work towards the goal of enjoying as much time with them as I can.
I never got being a parent until I made the realization that for a very short time you are the center of their world - they have nothing else but you and their love is unconditional. Sadly, they eventually grow out of that phase and either you did things right and set the foundation for their life, or you missed an opportunity that you will never get again.
If there's only one thing that's important in life it's making the most of every day with your children because when all is said and done they will probably be your greatest legacy.
Man, those are great words Wayne!
I get caught up in cleaning too much and it takes away time from my 4-month old. I get crabby when the house isn't spotless and my Fiance doesn't care. I get tunnel vision when something is not correct and I have to fix it right then and there; it is my perfectionist side.
I know from my pictures from the past of me shade-tree wrenching, that you guys probably think I am "Sanford and sons"
but those are not my houses/garages, those are my families places. Trust me, I have to have things straight!
Anyways, you made me snap a little with the words "center of their world".......because I looked to my Dad too and felt there was nothing he couldn't fix or build from scratch. I always thought he was genius.
My 4-month old is the reason my engine pieces for the '87 are in plastic boxes right now in the garage. No time, but that is ok!
Thanks Cory. They're great words and they're really hard to live up to... I realize it every day.
Time I take surfing the web, doing email, reading forums can all take time away from the kids and I've grown to realize that I'll never get that time back.... the days when your child runs up to you asking to play, or seeking attention only last so long and I've grown to appreciate that I should take advantage of them.
There are some days when you're just too busy, need time alone, or are just not in the mood to play. That's fine, but I realize that when I take time for those things, then it's time not spent enjoying helping my children grow up or teaching them something cool. Kids have wonderful insight and I've found that they teach me as much as I teach them - and nothing is more rewarding than the smile, hug or kiss that comes from a child when you've done something to make them happy. It's the purest form of affection.
Achieving balance in life is always tough. In the end I came to the point where I asked myself why I had kids and how I would like to see them grow up - being an active parent is important to me, so I try to default to giving time to my kids and taking time from other things... as a result, somethings take long to get done, or don't get done at all. My house will never be as clean or tidy again and that drives me nuts. In the end I wouldn't trade a thing forthe benefits I get from having my children.
It's pretty funny because pre-parenthood you would never have heard me say any of those things.
