POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi all Ive just joined as I recently purchased a 2000 996.1 Carrera and so far loving the owner ship. Its a high miler but the previous own kept on top of maintenance so its been well looked after. As its 24 years old, it has some issues I want to address so was hoping to find answers on the forum and from everyones help 🙂[img] So its got the common key fob failure. However I managed to get one key working with a fresh battery but it doesnt always work. I also saw the guide on to expose the antenna wire behind the A-pillar trim which I did. I just pulled it out the wrapped loom and left it free behind the A-pillar trim. It helped abit for a couple of days but now its not working again or very randomly will work. Any recommendations on what I could try next on this? The steering lock doesnt always work. Is there a trick on engaging it when taking the key out? I managed to get it to lock a couple of times but havent been able to repeat it. It currently has the oem Becker CR 220 headunit, 6 disc changer, Haes amplifier and the DSP button panel in the centre console. It doesnt sound great tbh and I usualy have the DSP button panel off as it only really makes an echo effect to the sound. I wanted to know how simple it is to just upgrade all the speakers in the car and still have them run off the oem amplifier? I have speakers in the rear side panels also. Ive also fitted a simple bluetooth module to the aux on the back of the H/U but was looking for something that will let me control next and previous track from the H/U using the cd changer connection. Any recommendations for something that will allow this? The car never came with the control for the OBC and I saw this can be retrofitted with the OEM stalk or with retrofit dash button. I currently have the temperature displayed under the MPH reading on the centre screen. Does this mean I have the OBC enabled? I was looking to fit a dash switch like some of the how to guides to be able to scroll through the OBC. Any tyre recommendations for the stock 18" tyres? I was looking at Michelin PS4 but open to suggestions. Been used to Yokohamas in the past. Will be using the car mainly for street/fast road use How simple is a rotor/discs and pad change? Can it be done with the car sitting on jack stands on the driveway? The suspension is also pretty tired as its never been replaced since the car was new. Ill eventually get to this though. Was looking to go down the coilover route and maybe have the bushings done with an oem control arm kit to make life easier doing the change Sorry for all the questions. Would really appreciate any help and direction Thank you 🙂[img]

Hello, congrats and welcome! I'll chime in on what I have experience with. PS4s are very popular for a reason. I've found continental extreme contact sport 2 tires are sticky, comfortable and fairly priced. I drive aggressively but no tracking and enjoy these tires. https://continentaltire.com/tires/ex...ntact-sport-02 Rotors, pads can definitely be done with the car on jack stands. Check out this video (and all their other videos). You Tube Good luck and enjoy!

POST 3Original post

Welcome! As Im a new owner of a 996 also, I dont have any answers to your 996 specific questions. However, I put Conti extreme contacts on my Mazdaspeed3, and they are great tires.

POST 4Original post

Welcome to the party pal 😀 These cars are great Porsches take your time with any issues and remember YouTube is your friend great DIY videos there. as for 18 inch tires I started using Hankooks I have raced on them for years now using the street ones on my 996s. They handle well, good in the rain, last long and are reasonably priced. yes you can do pads and rotors on jack stands the bleeding that way is a pain as you need to lift each wheel, bleed then go to next wheel one by one. one thing you are going to like is after 35 years of changing oil in all models of Porsches the 996 is probably the easiest of all I have even done one for a friend without jacking up car at all😀 enjoy your ride. POST 5Original post

I just installed PS4s that replaced an old tired set of Sumitomo HTR Zs tires and it is a night and day difference. The PS4s drive so much better. If you belong to a Costco, you can get a good price on them as their prices include installation.

POST 7Original post

Excellent choice! Welcome to the group. These cars are great fun. Fit like a glove. It sounds like yours is at the point where you could change everything because its old but it might not 'need' everything. -I have PS4S which I bought when the Hancook Ventus V12's aged out. I thought the Hancooks were good, but the Michelins are much better, even for a simple highway commute. No comparison on twisty roads. -A huge amount of work can be done on these cars on jack stands. I've done my brakes and full suspension on them. Others have pulled engines and transmissions. Just need tall jack stands or quick jacks with risers. -I think the OBC needs the 4-stalk column switch. Maybe. Mine is '02 and had a bad switch. When I went to look up the switch I saw references to 3-stalk and 4-stalk assemblies. Does the owners manual indicate any other way to switch between OBC values for dash display? The most important point to keeping these engines healthy is clean oil and good gas. There are many arguments around what the correct numbers are to follow, mine are 6mo/5K miles, The good gas part also includes the injectors. Poor spray patterns or leaky injectors lead to low power and if bad enough, bore scoring. If you have alot of miles, they may be nearing the end of their functional life. Please log your mileage and see if it fits in normal ranges as seen in many posts here in Rennlist. Mine, with new injectors, gets 18-22mpg Have fun. Many smiles ahead!

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Wow, Thank you guys, really appreciate the help from you all Ive ended up ordering some Michelin PS4's so thanks for the recommendation. Currently have Sumitomo which are 4 years old so should show a good difference. Regarding the brakes, I saw this kit on FCP https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/por...-99635140501kt Anyone have any experience with this kit? I was wondering if I will need to change the parking brake shoes on the rear aswell or can I get away with just adjusting them to be closer to the new rear brake discs? FCP currently have a discount code which ends today so was looking to make use of this Ill basically be attempting any DIY work in my apartment parking if possible so just wanted to try out doing brakes as a first job before going any deeper lol So I saw a DIY on the OBC and another way to use it is to wire up a momentary switch to be able to scroll through it. People have used an oem dash switch to do this but I wanted to see if the temperature is currently shown does that mean its already enabled in the system and just needs the control to be able to scroll through. Im hoping I don't need to change everything on the car because of its age but for the worn out suspension will need some attention lol Would be nice if I can get the key fob to work all the time instead of randomly as Im using the car as a daily and this would be a nice feature to have. Is there a different section of the forum I should use for electronics or stereo info? Thanks all for your help

POST 9Original post

The parking brake does not act on the rear disk but on the bell/hat. That doesn't wear unless someone always pulled the P brake handle whilst the car was still in motion. Readjust only necessarily, if you can drive away instead of stalling the engine with the P brake handle pulled up to the 3rd tooth on the ratchet.

POST 10Original post

Welcome @911Singh! Regarding the remote control issue, I don't know if this will solve your issue, but it could be worth a shot. When I got my car, the remote buttons had seen better days. I got a quote for hundreds to get a replacement key from the dealership. Then I learned that I could simply replace the button part of the key for $25: https://www.suncoastparts.com/product/996KEYBUTTON.html I was able to replace that on my office desk in about 10 minutes while following a youtube video.

Thats good then, One less thing to change also lol. Thanks So in my case the button works fine and the led on the remote lights up when pressed. I think its an issue with it communicating with the car/antenna. It works sometimes and sometimes it doesnt. I though by doing the TSB for the antenna it would atleast make it work consistently but seems like its got a mind of its own!

Mine came with two working keys. One stopped working almost immediately, the next lasted about a year. I changed the batteries but that didn't help, and guess I am old and used to opening cars with a key, so didn't ever bother to take the next step to fix (mother/circuit board or whatever it's called.)

Yea, I am having to open with the key which is fine. But would be nice if it didnt fail. Does the communication between the key and the module in the car just die down eventually? I wonder if re flowing the solder on the key fob circuit board might work?

POST 17Original post

Quotes source post: 19460225

Yes, I installed all this stuff with the car on jack stands on the back patio. I personally won't put any part of my body under a car held up by those ratchet style jack stands. I like the ones made by Essco. I also bought some Quick Jacks a few months ago (which I have yet to unbox) so my jack stand days may have peaked.
