A good friend of mine paid about 12k to have his replaced by the factory but they even came off that price quite a bit due to the generally unpleasant responses to engines failking not long after the warranties expired.

Yes, I beleive that $17k is about the going rate for the dealer to replace with a factory rebuilt motor.

I'm going to say, if the car had the 55k motor in it, it would be like any other run-of-the-mill 996 with 55k on it - so let's give that a value of $18k.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
21 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

I'm trying to help a local guy make an intelligent decision about his car. Here's the situation:
'99 996 C2, 47k, pretty standard options, nothing special except traction control. Very nice condition. Just had a factory rebuilt motor fail 2.5 years after last replacement. The dealer has removed the motor and diagnosed a cylinder wall failure.
He is looking at three options and plans to sell the car no matter which he chooses so cost/value retained is the prime consideration.
Option 1: Sell the car as it sits as a roller with removed failed motor
Option 2: Install my used 55k motor
Option 3: Install factory rebuilt motor w/warranty
Porsche and the dealer have agreed to substantially reduce the cost of the replacement motor from his original quote of over $17k.
Please share your opinion on the value of the car under all three options. I've already left a message for Jake asking what his customers are looking to spend on a donor car, but haven't heard back from him yet.
1- No motor
2- 55k used motor
3- Factory rebuilt motor with 2 year warranty
Thanks very much,
Joe
You forgot option 4: I'll take it off his hands as-is for free.
JK! I'll be interested in the responses. I can price early mustangs until the cows come home, but am at a bit of a loss to the Pcar prices in such states as those.
Unfortunately the current owner is pretty much caught out.
I would take a wag that on the car without motor, a person could only offer about $13k?
-- It's going to take minimum about $12k to get it going again, and the resale value won't be over $25k.
With the reman motor, you'd also have to make a lower offer, under $25k probably.
If you have a sense of adventure, maybe try and get the no-motor car cheap and acquire or build a hotter motor, i.e. X51 or Supercharger.
Just a couple ideas to throw in the mix....
I agree that the car with a factory rebuilt motor is in the $22k range. I just don't have a sense of how much less it would be worth with the used motor and have no idea what a broken motor rolling tub is worth.
Meister's figures are quite a bit off. I'll share the numbers later, but they're not really relevant if we're just considering the difference in sale value of the three options. There's no doubt that it sucks to be in his situation, but he's better off than most as PCNA and the dealer are trying to do something for him on a replacement.
The dealer told him that pre-failure, the car was probably worth $18k in trade towards another car. I'm not sure if that was the honest number or somewhat over-allowed by the dealer when figured towards a new or newer car sale.

A 99 was listed locally for 9,900 with a blown motor. That price attacted quite a few buyers and the car sold fast.
I was looking to purchase a 99 in so cal. Nice car with just 17K miles, yellow with sport seats. The guy was willing to sell it for 25K with the remainder of his aftermarket warranty.
If he doesnt' owe any money on it he should just sell it and walk away.
If he plans on keeping for 5 to 10 years or more, fix it and upgrade to an X51 while your in there.
If he hopes to fix it to sell it and break even, that will not happen and he should simply sell it as is and walk.
I'm going to say, if the car had the 55k motor in it, it would be like any other run-of-the-mill 996 with 55k on it - so let's give that a value of $18k. With a brand new Porsche motor with warranty, I'd say a $4k premium over that - so $22k. With no motor, I'd say you'd have to start with my first example but subtract the price of a motor - so that would be $8k or less.
Just my 2 cents - figures are not based on anything factual.
Local '99 Aero, 19", 30K, salvage title, blown engine, some body damage, sold on eBay for $12k last month. Unless they bought an engine for <$3k, do all mechnical and body work themselves, I don't see how they would not be upside down.

go on the racing forum and see if you can sell it. Maybe someone wants a spare spec car.
Jon, the idea of an LS1 did cross my mind on the C4s, but the car wasn't that far down the hole.
Of all the rear engined Porsches to put a V8 into, a 996 with a dead engine seems to make the most sense. Googling around doesn't turn up much, though. Lots of people willing to cut up an air cooled car for radiators and plumbing, but no one wants to take the easy way. $10-12k donor, <$20k out the door for a power to weight ratio better than a 996TT.
I bet there would be significantly less whining from the "purists" since we 996 owners have already drowned our 911 souls.
I'm sorry this guy has the infamous blown motor. Understandably, it sounds like your friend is more inclined to sell the car. However, having a '99 C2 with 40K miles, I've given this scenario lots of thought. The car would be amazing with an upgraded motor, and the warranty is a huge plus for someone who wants to keep the car. +1 on seizing the opportunity to make other mods also.
If he can get $10L-$13K for it with the blown motor on the open market, that's only a couple thousand less than the dealer offered me on trade for my '99. Maybe that will help ease some of the pain a little.

Is 17k the going rate for a reman engine from the factory these days? A good friend of mine paid about 12k to have his replaced by the factory but they even came off that price quite a bit due to the generally unpleasant responses to engines failking not long after the warranties expired. This was about 3 years ago or so.
Yes, I beleive that $17k is about the going rate for the dealer to replace with a factory rebuilt motor. This price has gone up very substantially in the last three years. The dealer who installed the last motor about 30 months ago and PCNA have agreed to do this for $11,xxx or so. He has already sunk $1,300 on removal and diagnosis of the old motor.
I've offered to sell him and install my used $55k motor for about $6k.
Thanks for your thoughts.
Joe
I am involved with several dealers on trading my 99 with 33k miles in perfect condition no motor /no rms, nothing wrong with it at all. The most that a dealer will offer for trade in is 18k. This one with it's issues if you are getting a 18k trade in ...get rid of it now do not think twice.
or try to sell it through auto trader etc.... you may get more. I personally would not put anymore money into it at all because it will only be worth less over time regardless of what you do, what aftermkt you add etc....a losing proposition
Yoops,
The dealer made a statement that it was probably worth 18k in trade pre-failure. They're definitely not offering that in the current state. Also, after his experience, the owner isn't sure he wants another Porsche.
Yoops:
I traded my 99C2 yesterday and they gave me $22k trade in value. 35k miles on the clock - car shows like new!
However - Last month just for fun I went to Carmax (Don't try this at home) they offered me $16k...
Anyway I traded for a 2006-M4 with warrantee........No more RMS, IMS issues for me I can sleep again.
99C2
As of last night, and thanks to the input from you guys, he's probably going to offer the car for sale as-is for $12,500-13,000. Please PM and I'd be happy to give anyone his contact info.
Thanks for the great feedback guys,
Joe
