Suggestion

For that price I would expect them to throw in the bezel for the AC control unit (you have to move it down by the shift ****) as well as the cubby to replace the CD holder.

Suggestion

1) When you use iPod album art on an iPhone, it takes the smallest version (something <100x100 pixels) and blows it up into a pixelated jaggy mess, instead of using the proper resolution.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

What is the collective wisdom of the group on the best nav to put in my 996 with this kit: http://cgi.ebay.com/New-99-02-Porsch...tem5ad267e8b5? Also, does anyone know where I can get the shifter pictured here? Thanks!

POST 2Original post

Wow! Seriously? They are charging $170 for that kit? For that price I would expect them to throw in the bezel for the AC control unit (you have to move it down by the shift ****) as well as the cubby to replace the CD holder. I've been pretty happy with my Pioneer AVIC F90BT (had it for about a year.) I just recently updated it to the latest firmware and software and it now responds to commands pretty quickly and the map scrolls very smoothly on the nav. The sound is great too -- much better than the Kenwood, IMHO. Good luck!

POST 3Original post

fyi, they also sell the parts seperately if you dont want to buy the whole kit, i just bought the trim piece, didnt need any of the other stuff i have a kenwood and am very happy with it

POST 4Original post

i installed a pioneer one such as the above posted but i bought my own materials to hook up.. cost was about $30 dollars including the bezel... all you'll need to do is buy a double din cage for like $10-20 buxs and then there is a trim piece sold by metra that's just a large piece of black plastic material that has a bunch of grids on the back side used to measure and cut out.. all you need to do is measure the right sides and use a utility knife to cut... very easy.... only tough thing is mounting the cage but that too isn't too bad and you'll save yourself $130 or so....

POST 5Original post

I've had the Kenwood DNX-9140 installed into my C4S. Overall, I'd rate the unit as fair - there are definitely some (pretty glaring) bugs as well as general sluggishness of the buttons. Given what I know now, I probably would have bought the Kenwood DNX-6140 (it's much cheaper), as I like rotary dials for the volume control, rather than the extremely small up\down buttons found in the 9140\7140.

POST 6Original post

I have the AVIC Z110BT, and, having just gotten an iPhone, I keep saying over and over: "why can't a $1500 head unit do that?!?" As I understand it, the Z110 (along with the new Kenwood) are as good as it gets. Knowing then what I do now, I'd have held out until someone puts a really comprehensive iPhone front-end into a double-din in-dash.

POST 7Original post

Avic-Z3 here, no complaints except lousy ipod interface, AVIC Z110BT is the replacment

POST 8Original post

Well the great thing about the AVICs is that they are based on Windows CE. Some may say that is a BAD thing but for me it is good because you can easily update the software and make all sorts of hacks to the UI and maps and even change out the mapping software from iGo to TomTom to Garmin if you wanted to! When I got my AVIC F90BT the boot time was pretty long (almost unbearable) and the touchscreen response was not the fastest. The latest software and firmware upgrade fixed that and now it is how it should have left the factory to begin with! Anyway, check out www.avic411.com for info on how to hack your satnav. Good modding!

I've been considering the AVIC Z for a while, on the premise that it does just about everything. What are the major shortcomings?

I'll touch on a few conspicuous ones, which should give you a sense of the overall standard of engineering: 1) When you use iPod album art on an iPhone, it takes the smallest version (something <100x100 pixels) and blows it up into a pixelated jaggy mess, instead of using the proper resolution. 2) It won't play video of any reasonable quality from a USB drive or SD card. It has very limited video formats. I've gone through dozens of bitrate and resolution versions trying to find something that looks good and will play. It won't play the ubiquitous Divx/Xvid format except from a DVD. 3) It doesn't sort files on a USB drive or SD card. That's right, it displays them in the random order they were added. Amazing. 4) The navigation is pure ****. You can't force roads or waypoints. You can't exclude roads. You can't tell it the right way to go when it chooses the wrong way. I had a brilliant experience driving south on the Merritt Tpk through Connecticut (a fun, twisty road that parallels I-95). Of the 6 possible route options, ALL OF THEM were on I-95. Every exit, it told me to get off the Merritt and take I-95. When I told it to exclude interstates (supposedly an option), it refused. 4b) The only traffic info option is MSN direct, which a) sucks, and b) is being shut down in a year or so. Driving southbound on the NJ Tpk near Philly, it was warning me of NYC traffic. 5) Finding the "millions" of points of interest is impossible. I tried to find the nearest Fedex drop box while driving and almost crashed as it scrolled out hundreds of them across the country. On the iPhone, I say "Pizza" and it shows a map of exactly where I am with every pizza place highlighted. Is that so hard? 6) It doesn't support playlists or album art for mp3s on a USB drive or SD card. 7) You can't navigate to a contact in your bluetooth linked cellphone address book. 8) With the nice big touchscreen and built in virtual keyboard, you still can't send a text message. It's really baffling overall. If you assembled a focus group of monkeys, they could make better choices than the Pioneer people did.

POST 12Original post

Wow... interesting to hear this feedback. I've actually been considering a Pioneer nav system to replace my CDR-220.

POST 13Original post

Admittedly, I have never owned a previous generation or any of it's competitors, so the Z may well be a huge step forward. I just get very frustrated when a cool technology doesn't do things right by default, and then doesn't give you the tools or configuration options to fix what's wrong. Especially for something that cost 3x as much as my PC. Honestly, a big ol' touchscreen that acted as a front end for the iPhone, and a connection from the iPhone to the car's amp, would do literally EVERYTHING better than the Z. Except play those archaic silvery discs--like anyone uses them anymore.

POST 14Original post

you can put in what ever kind of unit you want then make a bezel to fit around it. I did this one with 1/8" black vinyl. (the flash makes it look like the side edge is showing off, but you cant see it in the car)

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
