Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.
Discussions that report identifying a cause
1
0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Leading evidence: 'battery' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'battery' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace battery once a year' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion · Original poster
The bummer of this situation is that I've been replacing the battery once a year.

You've had quite the run of bad luck this year John.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

After a week in the garage my 01 C4 will not start. When I turn the key, I hear rhythmic clicking from the engine compartment (starter?) but no ignition. The electric components work (HID lights, seats, etc), the tank is 3/4 full. The car started and drove like a champ last weekend. After all is said and done, the airbag and rear top lights stay on. Also, when I try to start the car, the window glass goes up and down.
Any ideas?
I feel like a total dummy! Yes, it was indeed the battery. I was completely fooled because all the electrical was working and (what I thought was) the starter was clicking. I guess it just takes a massive amount of power to get that engine started. The bummer of this situation is that I've been replacing the battery once a year. That's not quite right is it? Should driving for a couple of hours each weekend be enough to keep the battery fresh?
My 996 C4S had the same exact symptoms, clicks and up and down windows
and all. It was the battery.
Oh, and since the dealer wanted 400 + 250 for installation and clearing codes,
I showed up with a new battery and Durametric and installed it myself,
right at the dealer's parking lot. Interstate MTP 48 battery cost me 160 CDN + return old one.
It took me less than 10 minutes to do it (including clearing codes).
If you are going for a new battery, and buying a tender anyway, I'd go for a lightweight batt and shave off ~25#.
I'm running the Odyssesy 925T and a mount from Rennline. I keep it on the tender during the week since mine is a weekend car, but at a recent track event with no 'tending', never a hiccup, even when it dipped into the 30s at night, and the car sat outside.
Just another option
