Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suspecting the battery, I swapped for a new battery last month.
Leading evidence: 'Replace battery last month' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Adjust mixture' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
This sensor tells the ECU that the engine is hot so the ECU can adjust the mixture for a hot start.

Besides the starter and since you have an older car I would check the cables for corrosion, etc.

there are ways to test the draw it has and there are limits.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Cheers Everyone
Im hoping to get some advice on my warm starting problems. I thought I saw a thread in early surfing - but a search was unsuccessful.
I have a 99 996 - runs strong with no issues. Late last summer, after driving for bit Id turn the key and it would appear the battery was dying as the starter cranked hard. This happened a couple of times after getting the car up to driving temps.
This spring I had the same problem. Whats strange is the car can sit outside in the bitter Michigan cold and starts right up but after driving for 15 minutes or more the starter cranks hard. Suspecting the battery, I swapped for a new battery last month. After 2 weeks, the same problem occurred. If charging system was bad I would think the car would crank hard in both warm and cold. Anybody suspect starter is going bad?
Thanks for advice, Thad
I would say - Starter = suspect
there are ways to test the draw it has and there are limits. I think a quick stop at an indy shop could confirm or dismiss this. and they should do it for free, its relatively quick to tell IIRC. I have not researched the starter R&R but if you are handy, I am sure its not too bad, i think I saw it when I had my intake manifold off.
Get it tested (they hook onto the batter cables while you are turning over the motor and read the amps or current, its that simple)
had this problem on my old camaro... when the starter is warm, it was hard to start the car. Had to wait till it cools to crank properly.
yes, starter is under/behind the second intake plenum... PIA to get to....
IIRC on the SBC motors the starter is very close to the exhaust too which helps "warm it up" (and burn it up!)
same symtoms though
yea, PIA to change, but only time... if you are handy, beats having to pay for that too. (and some outragous priced starter)
The starter is a pretty simple DIY. The procedure is done completely on top of the car, you don't even need a jack. Suncoast Porsche charges ~$150 net for a remanufactured OEM starter with core return. There is a write-up on renntech for this procedure.

Folks - thanks for the advice. I was sort of stumped with this one. I think I might take a shot r/r the starter. Nothing more frustrating than sitting somewhere waiting for the car the cool off.
Happy motoring.
It makes sense that your starter is struggling more when the engine is warm because the compression is higher than when it is cold. Besides the starter and since you have an older car I would check the cables for corrosion, etc. A bad cable would limit the amount current available to the starter.
Another thought if a new starter doesn't do the trick. Replace the coolant temperature sensor.
This sensor tells the ECU that the engine is hot so the ECU can adjust the mixture for a hot start. Had this go out on both my Audis, easy fix.
