Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Incidentally, I checked the 996 bolt against a wheel bolt on my wife's Mercedes, and they seem to be the same thread, so it's possible that the BMW bolts are the same thread as well.

sure we are not putting too much into this "tire changing operation"

If you have measurement requirements I could check for you, but otherwise I don't have a 996 to test on.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Could you let me know if the alignment pin that came with your car (in your trunk lid tool kit) slips into the lug bolt threads on a 996? The wheel alignment pin is the thing you use to hang your wheel onto the hub when you're mounting the wheel back on the hub.
I know my car has one, but the Porsche version has to be threaded, wheras the BMW pin (at least on older BMWs) just slides in and out.
My post below has a picture of what the BMW version looks like.
I should have tried this with my own BMW tool while I still had a BMW but it never occurred to me at the time.
Thanks.
so..... you want a pin to slip into the threads of the hub, hange the wheel and pull out the pin? (or a couple pins?)
this cant be hard to make.... piece of round stock the right diameter of the material and length you desire, turn the end to fit into the threaded holes... taper the end that sticks out... done
you could use SS or even alunimum and have it hard anodized in the color of your liking...
Gawd I hate work.......... sorry, thats how I think
Agreed, I want to buy two of them, but the Porsche one has to be threaded in, whereas the BMW one just slips in and out. Believe, me, that's a lot easier.
so can they measure the diameter for you and tell you... then I or someone else can say... Yup, or Nope on the fitment
the link you posted didnt show me a tool (then again, maybe I missed it) BUT there should be a small end (goes in the hole) and a bigger end (fits wheel holes) we would need both of those diameters to tell

(ps... $6...? shoot I wouldnt turn my lights on in the shop for $6 !! )
It's not that it's hard, but aligning the wheel onto the hub takes some time, especially on the front , where the hub keeps spinning every time you try to turn the wheel to line up the holes.
I didn't even know that pin was in the tool kit. If you have measurement requirements I could check for you, but otherwise I don't have a 996 to test on.
so that's what that thing is for (my daughter has been using it as a lance for Barbie to jab at Ken when he gets alittle frisky).
If you find out that it fits ok let me know, I'd gladly send it to you....I have a couple in the basement from BMWs past (sorry you can only have one as the little one won't give hers up yet)....or if you just want it any way, PM your address and I'll mail it off.
I measured one of my 996 wheel bolts and it's about 1/2" in diameter. So, if the grey plastic end of your BMW wheel alignment pin is slightly less than 1/2" in diameter, it should fit just fine. Incidentally, I checked the 996 bolt against a wheel bolt on my wife's Mercedes, and they seem to be the same thread, so it's possible that the BMW bolts are the same thread as well.
Let me know what you find.
Thanks.
