Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I know the gear position lights in the rev counter works, but thought it rather strange that Porsche couldn't run a wire or two and bulb.

Suggestion
I guess the OP needs to set his ambient light to high then, which may help to illuminate the gear shift console.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Do you have lights that show through the gear selection position for P, N, D and M??
If there are lights that show through these letters - then I must have a bulb burnt out as I have to put the over head light on to see the gear selection position at night.
Gee Thanks, Tippy...you just gave me a problem!
Are you sure btw, I don't recall seeing that since I got it. Could it be the red/orange ambient light from the mirror above?
Ok so now I'm confused (which is easy to do)??? I'm not talking about the lights on the Rev counter that show gear selection. I'm talking about the lack of lighting down on the plastic plate by the gear lever area. It's the only car I've ever driven that had a 'auto' box that when you turn on your headlights, that the gear quatrant doesn't light up the P, N, D1,D2,D3,D4, etc. Not that it matters as the diodes on the cluster show you anyway - I was just currious. I guess it would have cost Porsche an extra 5 bucks so it was a no go from the accounting dept.
+1 on Tippy's post...definitety red lights on the gear selection, and not just ambient glow from the overhead lighting.
I don't have any lighting on the console, would be redundant anyway right?
Relief.....that's what I thought when I looked, but I wasn't sure. I just turned the key on and turned on the lights. I will definitely take a closer look later to confirm.
When you say console, do you mean the gauge cluster display area? If it doesn't display which gear you're in, then you definitely have something out of order.
Unless, we are all confused coz' they have different features on different year models??
Also, I think the ambient light from the rear-view mirror is only available on the auto-dimming mirrors?
Not true. I didn't have the auto dimming rear view mirror, but I did have the orientation light behind (windshield side) the mirror.
Maybe your orientation lights are on low. Stick a paper clip or very small item in the small hole in the dome lens cover (toward the passenger's side) and press the switch. The switch will alternate between low and high, but don't expect a dramatic change in the light level between the two settings. It is best to do this at night in the garage so you can see the difference in the light levels.
Ok, so we know all mirrors have the ambient lighting.
Yes Tim, I do have the auto-dimming mirror and the ambient light. I did set it to high at one time as well.
I guess the OP needs to set his ambient light to high then, which may help to illuminate the gear shift console.
Sorry for not being clear Cosmos: by console I mean where the actual shift lever is (no illumination of gear selection) vs. the temp/fuel gauge (red illuminated dots indicating gear selection).
Gotta keep this thread moving
Yeah??? .....Well....... uhmmm....... but not for long, because after about 15 seconds your car will be nothing but a spec on the horizon! So there!!!
I guess I told him!!!
Okay, so the first thing I did when I got home tonight was to grab the keys to my Porsche, turn on the headlights, stick the key in the ignition and put the car in drive (we tip guys are so nice).
And no, the P,R,N,D on the transmission tunnel (a/k/a console) do not light up. Why? Because the letters are painted on. They are not windows through which a little bulb is intended to shine.
Funny how I've had this car for 8 years and I never noticed this (possibly because I've driven it maybe 5 times at night).
