Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Work and the weather finally cooperated a couple days ago and I was able to take some pics of my car. Some of you saw pics of the car when I posted a link to the eBay ad, so feel free to ignore if this is redundant. It's just your basic silver '01. ~78k miles. It has some nice interior upgrades to add some color, and the M030 and sport exhaust almost make it racier than my track car. I've fixed the broken console hinge and have an O2 sensor and new spark plug tube on the way to fix 2 other minor items. Other than that it needs nothing, but I do have a couple of dash switches on-hand to eventually control the exhaust, engine fan, and spoiler.

Congratulations! Can't wait to see her in person.

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have this thing about silver German cars. Track car is silver and a previous E36 M3 was silver as well. To choose anything but silver for a German car is just sacriligious. ;-) No mods planned except for switches for the PSE, spoiler, and engine fan. I spend too much time and $$ on the track car that I have nothing left over for this one. I leave for work ~5:30 in the morning and a few neighbors have commented on how much louder my car is than the truck. ;-) I want to be able to silence the mufflers at low speeds to keep peace w/ my neighbors. It's a factory install so it has the 25-45 mph cutout. Does anyone have a wiring diagram for the engine fan? I want to be able to manually turn on the fan when I'm stuck in traffic on a hot day or have it on a few minutes after shut-down. One thing I've learned from maintaining my turbo for a decade is how engine heat shortens the life of rubber and plastic.

The mod consists of installing a switch that will allow you to turn on the high speed radiator fans at any time, while maintaining the automatic operation of the fans. Radiator Fans Connect a wire to the ground of the 2 high speed fan relays located on the relay carrier located in the drivers side foot well. The relays are #20 and #22. Feed this wire to where your switch will be located. Connect the wire to one side of the switch. Connect another wire from the other contact on the switch and then connect the other end of this wire to a chassis ground point. With key on, this switch will now immediately turn on both radiator fans providing maximum cooling. When you turn the key off, the fans will continue to run for about 5 seconds until the relay shuts down. Your fan operation remains normal when the switch is off. You can now maintain your coolant temperature below 200F in even the hottest climate and heaviest of traffic. Engine Compartment Fan Connect a wire to the ground of the relay located in the relay carrier behind the passenger seat, drivers side. Relay #8. . Feed this wire to where your switch will be located. I simply fed the wire along the drivers side of the car and under the door sill. Connect the wire to one side of the switch. Connect another wire from the other contact on the switch and connect the other end of this wire to a chassis ground point. With key on, this switch will now immediately turn on the fan drawing air into the engine compartment. When you turn the key off, the fan will continue to run for about 5 seconds until the relay shuts down. Your fan operation remains normal when the switch is off. This mod helps keep the engine compartment much cooler when driving around town and is particularly beneficial to any engine that draws its intake air from inside the engine compartment, such as the EVO SC. posted by 1999porsche911

Thanks redridge. Exactly what I was looking for. I certainly want to do the engine fan control and maybe the rad fans as well. I have rad fan control (separate low and hi-speed controls) on my track car and it's really useful. Question, though. Where is the relay carrier located that's mentioned in the engine compartment fan instructions?
