It can be a bitch to clean, but what I've used on other vehicles is a surfactant mixed with water to flush, repeating until no floating oil globules can be seen in the reservoir or the drained fluid.

Suggestion

Laundry detergent makes a good choice for the cleaning process because you don't want a lot of foaming, which will get in the way of thoroughly wetting of all the surfaces inside the cooling system.

Suggestion

If you do the cleaning using the engine to circulate the detergent mix, the heat from the system will definitely be an aid to breaking down the emulsion and letting you get it completely clean.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So I have finally started to wrk on diagnosing the intermix problem on my 2000 996 Cab. I drained the coolant and was surprised by how thick the intermix of coolant and oil is, like pudding, so thick it took hours to drain from the engine, which was cold. The mix is much thicker than either the oil (Mobil 0-40) or coolant. What is the chemistry that causes to two relatively thin fluid to mix and become so thick? Anyone know the chemistry of this? The mix of coolant in the oil seems to be thinner. With the thickness of the coolant mix I can see it is going to be very hard to flush it out of the whole system including the radiators.

POST 2Original post

I believe the pudding-like consistency you see is the result of the water pump whipping the oil and coolant into an emulsion. It can be a bitch to clean, but what I've used on other vehicles is a surfactant mixed with water to flush, repeating until no floating oil globules can be seen in the reservoir or the drained fluid. Be sure to turn the cabin heat up to clean out the heat exchanger in the HVAC system as well. Follow that with several fresh water rinses, and fill with the normal antifreeze / distilled water mix. I think you'd probably want a vacuum fill kit similar to this one due to the notoriously difficult to purge cooling system on these cars. Laundry detergent makes a good choice for the cleaning process because you don't want a lot of foaming, which will get in the way of thoroughly wetting of all the surfaces inside the cooling system. If you do the cleaning using the engine to circulate the detergent mix, the heat from the system will definitely be an aid to breaking down the emulsion and letting you get it completely clean.

POST 3Original post

the water makes steam when it mixes with the oil; doug is right, it's an emulsion of oil and clycol with tiny air bubbles in it (like whipped cream).

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Emulsion sounds right. What suprises me is that even after sitting for a couple of months it is still like pudding. Very little seperation has taken place.
