Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Install set about 2 1/2 years ago' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'much better system than the first version imo' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Install set about 2 1/2 years ago' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Jim, check out the GHL quite versions, that's what I run, not too loud at all, def less backpressure.

I think 200 is high for used 3.6 boxes, I've seen them go for 50$, hell I just tossed mine in the garbage.

Suspected cause
Probably a much better system than the first version IMO.

Suggestion
Jim, I believe they are a direct bolt in, not sure how great they would run on a 3.4 though.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Does anyone know offhand if mufflers from the 3.6 will bolt to the 3.4 without modification? I assume that the 3.6 mufflers have a little more flow to them than do the 3.4, but feel free to correct me if I am wrong.
Thanks, Jim
Chris, I have a chance to get 2 3.6 mufflers for like, $200 and I was just wondering if I would get a little more flow through the otherwise stock exhaust and maybe a slightly lower tone. I like the stock restriction with the blower as it really provides some nice bottom end, but if I could free up a little back pressure without any resonnance, I will be happy. The other option I was thinking is the GHL muflers. I do not want loud, just a little more flow.
I fitted a set about 2 1/2 years ago. Perfect fit and they have the benefit of a bellows type adaptor on the inlet pipe which reduced a lot of rumble and vibration. The car felt a lot smoother after they were installed as well. The mild steel fixings were all corroded so new clamps, nuts and bolts were needed and cost almost as much as the second hand boxes!
Er... difficult to say really. The car was sold to me with a slight resonance in one of the boxes (caused by a loose baffle) and over the period of a couple of months the tick-over became erratic and the engine made a slight metallic noise when ticking over. Once on the move the sound was pure Porsche. The new boxes made the car sound like new - much smoother at low revs, no jingle-jangle and when the pedal hit the metal ;-)
I paid 150 for each box and bought them from a well known Porsche Garage that specialises in aftermarket exhausts. They were only a few months old with hardly any surface staining. About the only time in 3 1/2 years of wnership that I ever got ANYTHING done to the car that didn't need a second mortgage!
I should add that subjectively it felt as quick to drive as my friends C4S. He could not shake me off!
The 3.6 mufflers do have an improvement in sound, but don't expect any real HP differences. The original 996 was intended to meet strict Swiss sound laws, but after much complaints from the Porsche faithful they revised the 3.6 with more sound. Now the question is, is it enough for you as you still might not be satisfied with it.
Thanks for your input. The increased flow is what I am looking for and sound is only secondary. I really could care less if it increases the sound. just so it doesn't create resonnance. I am getting 2 3.6 mufflers next week from a buddy for $200 (for both). They are just sitting in his garage collecting dust. I'll try to make a sound file of before and after.

Yes, they hardly have any value. After I sold my F.Testarossa with the tubi, I put the original exhaust on ebay twice. The highest bid I received was like $40. I tossed them into the garbage as I was not willing to go through the shipping costs/packing ordeal.
Finished installing 2003 C4S mufflers today on my 99 C2. What a sound difference. Lower sound, but quiet at idle and a nice sound at WOT. Simply had to swap the mounting bracket from my 3.4 mufflers to the new ones and they bolted right on.
Thanks for your input.
Thanks, but I just picked up 2, 2003 C2 and 2 C4S mufflers. C4S installed and I like them. Probably going to turn the C2's into sport mufflers to try. The C4S's have alot more flow than the C2.
You could make a sport exhaust the just like the Porsche PSE (1st gen at least), weld a 5/8" pipe between the inflow and outflow pipes and you're done. If you don't have to mess with a valve it would be easy.
Mark,
If you look at the available pictures of the first version PSE it can easily be seen. They used a J shaped pipe approx 5/8" diameter connecting the inflow and outflow tubes outside of the main muffler body. When you look closely it can be seen that they simply plasma cut a hole into the existing pipe and grafted the bypass onto it. The only complicated part is the valve and actuator arm assembly, which are the parts that eventually rattle loose ( it is only pressed together). This is the Achilles heel of the PSE IMO.
The newer versions of PSE look much better, there is a large pipe exiting the muffler body and joining the main outflow tube, again with a valve. Probably a much better system than the first version IMO.
I have some pics of the early version I will gladly e mail you. I bet one could easily duplicate the early version for probably $20 worth of parts/welding.
1999Porsche911,
Figure out how to do that correctly and you would have several others with requests. I know in Belgium they are modifying the regular mufflers at shops for customers. Let us know how it goes, and if you are interested in doing this for others.
