Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I'm running 225 and 285 sections on MY02 wheel with 15 mm spacers currently - but the rears are worn <shocker> and a set of good condition 235/40/18 and 295/30/15

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Continental Extreme Contact Sport have come up in 235 and 295 section.
Date code on the Conti's is 4618 - which I think I can live with if the price is right....
Alternately I will probably buy Sumitomo from Tire Rack for about the same price - but they will be new and will be in the "correct" 225 and 285 sizing.
Thoughts ?
Well - not for the price he is asking.
My thinking is they would be good for two seasons but not 3 or 4.
They were stored inside...but yeah - totally.
It sounds like they may not be a great fit anyway - at which point the WHY question doubles up.
OP - Rethink the purchase? The rubber is almost 6 years old and a softer compound degrades faster with age and exposure than an 400-560 will. Think stopping distance reduction and noise increase, minimum.
This ^ The only thing that enables your car to grip/stick to the surface of the road come rain or shine, and youre considering fitting items which most tire manufacturers would consider at or close to the end of their serviceable life.
One word, madness (sorry if that offends, but its the harsh reality of the matter)
And FWiW, I run 235/295 combo on standard 8 and 10 wheels on my 996.2 C2 Coupe.
Here you go :
The car is running on custom sprung Ohlins R&T's. The spring rates are considerably lower than the softer option springs Ohlins offer. I run the tire pressures at 36psi.
Personally I far prefer the chunkier sidewall the wider tire comes with. The sidewall on the 285 section tire looks rather thin and the wheel/tire combo lost in the fender opening, in comparison to the 295 with it's taller/wider sidewall.
Thanks! Looks great - I thought the sidewalls would stick out more but that looks perfect. I'm assuming you didn't need spacers are you didn't mention them?
Front is wide track spec courtesy of Eibach/SPC adjustable coffin arms, top mounts moved outboard as far as possible, and adjustable caster arms.
Rears no spacers currently, but may fit some 5/7 or 8mm items once the geometry has been done next week.

Slightly similar but different question y'all... I need to get new rear tires (one needs to be replaced, but ya...)
Front are newer 225/40/18 Michelin Pilot Sport 4S, rears are 265/35/18
Im thinking about getting 275 or 285, good idea or bad?
225x40x18 with the 285x30x18 on 8/10 wheels.
If you want a softer ride over the bumps for the street and and are willing to sacrifice a bit of responsiveness in handling for canyon carving go to
235x40x18 and 275x35x18 or 285x35x18.
For track I run 225x40x18 and 285x30x18. When my RE71RSs wear out, I may try
225x40x18 with 295x30x18.
Imho, unless you are willing to go to 8.5 and 11 wheels, I would stick within that range. You can do everything with suspension set up to get the car to drive like a go cart within that range of tires. Too big of tire over too small of wheel equals flabby handling. But that's OK if you want a softer ride and don't care as much about handling.
The tire rack tests on tire sizes and wheel sizes provide analysis that may be a beneficial reference point
