I don't feel like paying $600 for an oil change and to check fluids levels.

Charged me more than the dealer (I did not know at the time - stupid me!) When I got it back, they had put a big hole in my Cab top and then gave me the run around about taking responsibility for it.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

5 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Well... with my past experiences with Porsche dealer service shops, I'm not that enthused about taking my car to Fred Lavery or stealership around here. I don't feel like paying $600 for an oil change and to check fluids levels. Are there any good independent shops around for 996's? I've found that good independent shops fix and find the problems more quickly and correctly than dealerships. Thanks in advance!

POST 2Original post

Depending on what you need done. For instance, if an oil change is all you need, I suggest buying the oil from Autozone or the like. Buy replacement filters from Sunset in Oregon (I bought a dozen as well as all the other filters to save on shipping). Then I took my 996 to Jiffy Lube on M-59 by the Pontiac Airport : [phone removed]. I know, I was hesitant to go there as well but, go see Tom, the manager. He is a trained mechanic and an auto enthusiast. I also go on to renntech.com and download all the DIY instructions. It is amazing all the things you can do yourself. Loren over there is a tremendous knowledge asset. I took the instructions over to Tom and he did the work just like they state. All at the low Jiffy Lube price. I have been taking my cars to him for more than 5 years with great service. If something comes up that needs other kind of attention, then check out www.nikolasmotorsport.com . They do pretty good work. But they are not cheap either. I have found that Lavery is good if you contact Kern in the shop. Go by and see him and by pass all the other idiots over there that only think about ripping everyone off - he is great and honest. You have to know what you want though and ask specifically for that. Do NOT go to, I repeat, do NOTTTTTT go to Munks Motors in Waterford. They absolutely suck. I took my car to them; they had it for over three weeks, more or less, to install new OEM shocks and springs. Charged me more than the dealer (I did not know at the time - stupid me!) When I got it back, they had put a big hole in my Cab top and then gave me the run around about taking responsibility for it. I had to hire a lawyer to help me. That summer sucked let me tell you. Finally got it resolved but not without the hassle. Finally, you might just have to go to the dealer when some things come up but those are few and far between. Hope this helps. Let me know if I can assist. By the way, I have no affiliation with any of these places. I am only telling you of my experience, others might be different.

POST 3Original post

I would do it yourself since it's pretty easy. Go to renntech.org for DYI instructions. You'll get to know your car better. If you don't want to wrench, I've heard the dealer in Ann Arbor/Dearborn is reasonable in price ($500) for 15/30k service. I don't think you'll get too much lower than that. Instead of oil changes, you should do the full checks given that these cars only need shop time once a year and every 15k mi. Don't forget other things like brake fluid flush every 2-3 yrs w Porsche fluids.
