Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Adjust base model' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Adjust base model' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Instead of adding on a turbocharger or supercharger to your M96, I would highly recommend joining the PCA and going to an Autocross training followed by a Novice track day with an instructor.

It is fairly routine to have to replace a turbo every 50K miles.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Have all the other known points of failure on your engine been addressed? A turbo or supercharger puts huge amounts of stress on the engine. You may have to go as far as upgrading rods, pistons with a full engine teardown, plus making sure everything is in top notch shape internally. As a point of reference, I will never own a turbocharged or supercharged car. The cost of maintenance is huge. It is fairly routine to have to replace a turbo every 50K miles.
This forum is the best
Edit, to be at least halfway useful: dude, yes you can, but $$$ youll never recoup and the base engine is famously fragile (dont @ me guys).
We have a whole thread going about how everyone is dropping $30k just to keep driving their base models. The advice to go Turbo shopping is legit.
These cars are so old and so popular that everything under the sun has been tried. The good advice floats to the top and the bad advice fades away.
If adding an aftermarket turbo or supercharger were the right move, you'd see it all over this forum, YouTube, IG, etc...kinda like you see chatter about suspension mods (which are recommended and vetted).
Can you do it: Yes.
Should you do it: Probably not.
Will we watch you try: Absolutely...and we'd probably cheer you on.
Would most of us do this to our cars: No.
Why would you want to do this?
I can guarentee you that the stock 996 is more than the majority of owners can handle on the street and track.
There is no need to wrap yourself around a tree nor blow up your engine prematurely. Instead of adding on a turbocharger or supercharger to your M96, I would highly recommend joining the PCA and going to an Autocross training followed by a Novice track day with an instructor. You will quickly realize that you are not able to handle the power of a stock 996 let alone one with more power.
Spend your money on bullet proofing the M96 engine first.
@porsche996enthu, I know that 300HP doesn't seem like a lot for a proper sports car these days, but as @GC996 says, it's more than enough.
The car feels fast and nimble, which is what's most important.
I sold a 500HP/200MPH M5 to buy my Carrera 4S with like 325HP...and I am glad that I did.
Focus on how your car feels, not numbers. This isn't a race car. Even 996 Turbos would probably get dusted when racing against modern turbo hot hatches and whatever. It's not about that.
^^^THIS
1. Bullet proof your engine first.
2. Get the best damn tires for grip
3. Get the best damn brakes for slowing power
4. Upgrade your suspension for better handling
5. Get safety equipment
Back when these cars were newer so like mid-2000s there were a couple of guys on the forum with vortex ? Superchargers that didnt immediately explode the engine and were pushing them on the track but it was way out of my comfort zone at the time so I never followed up on how they held up over time.
the general consensus at the time was that it gave equivalent performance to a 996 turbo model and was cheaper than buying a 996 turbo but not by much and the 996 turbo was a known quantity built for boost (although it was a very different time for pricing)
these days Id LS swap it before slapping a supercharger on the original engine, and Id just go buy a newer, higher hp car before I did either.
Yep, I was tracking my 996 back then and today. At the time, the M96 was considered a "throw away" engine and for $7,500 you could get a new long block M96. It was a great program that eventually ended and gave birth to short block and rebuild programs.
Now the short block program will cost you ~$8-10k for the short block plus labor totalling $15-20k to swap it. Rebuilds are 2x that amount.
If you need the power, the 996 market is giving 996 turbos away for a song and dance.
Look, I love helping guys out with the 996. But this question suggests you are either a 16 year old kid or you are just having some fun. My suggestion to you is to study up on the 996 and come back in a decade.
When you ask such a loaded question with no obvious research you should expect stupid responses...
The best turbo is the biggest turbo, definitely dont need to worry about boost lag, or reinforced internals.
Or just add 100bhp dry shot of NAAWWWSSSS
I got chu fam.
Listen.....
I dont normally do this but you seem like you've put in the effort so I'm willing to help you get to 10/10ths.
But I need to know you're serious.

Drop 0.05 btc here and I'll be in touch : bc1qsfwutlh0f6udz392tyas6hxjtg3gr039ltc7rd
I mean, lil bro cant even scrounge up .05 btc so trust me he aint gonna be supercharging anything, much less an appreciating classic like the 996.
I stand by my convictions that I can't give out OG POWAH advice for skittles but after careful consideration of his situation, I think this is gonna be more within the boundaries of his technical skills and more appropriate to his current... let's call them "budgetary constraints"...
lil bro is well and truly skint but I found a way he can still chase them dreams.....
Well, I did learn that 0.05 btc is a Bitcoin currency and equals $3441.97 usd....something I had never seriously looked at ...
So I guess there is always something to be learned ??
@porsche996enthu
Don't know if you are for real or not. But now is your chance to set the record straight. Tell us about your car. what have you done to it. Provide pictures. We may be rough, but we all want to see the 996 survive and thrive.
