Wow.
I have read several threads on the 996 boards today where a newbie has posted some sort of problem, or dredged up an old thread after searching for/and finding what he wanted to ask, and the first thing we do is jump all over these guys.
What is going on?
This is not like us.
Is our board so filled up with members that we can just shoo way the newbies now?
Newbies. I apologize for the mud-brained morons who are so starved to attack someone on the internet that they picked on you before you even had a chance to grow into the groove here (though it seems our groove has jumped the track lately).
Newbies. Please don't go away angry or insulted. The vast majority of us do not find our lives so stark and dry that we have to attack total strangers who have come to us for help and guidance.
It might be cabin fever for all those who have been snowed in for so long. It might be the stress and impatience brought on by things they cannot control.
Regardless. We really are a fun group...usually...limiting our initial hazing comments to goading you into posting a picture of your car.
Please forgive the buttox's out there today. We are not all that way.
Thanks
I would like to direct your attention to the following post - my all time favorite
https://rennlist.com/forums/7609908-post28.html
not sure if I mud headed today... if I did - I too am sorry to the newbie....I did think one thread went whack pretty fast and didnt get that....missed the other ones -
welcome newbies -
I'm a newbie and have received tons of help, kind words and some constructive criticism in the past few days. It's a nice refreshing change from my local car forum that is full of trolls and D-bags. I think you guys and gals are great so far. Keep up the good work.
This thread is a testament to the quality of this forum. I don't think you'd find another major forum where members care so much about how new members get treated.
That said, I am taking confessions for a limited time only. If you bashed a newbie and want to make it up, you can confess for a small fee. Just PM me and I'll send you my bank account details.
Takers, anyone?
One of my first posts was regarding installing fabspeed cans. I was directed to show pics of my issue...which I complied. I have gotten into arguments with some and made friends with others. The 996 board is like a fraternity. The replies today regarding seating were asking questions if you read between the lines. We all have a common bond....its not about how much we make a year or what our titles are. Honestly I couldn't give a rats a$$. This is a great place plain and simple and I am very happy to be a part of it.
I know some of the guys here in this forum are Real Porsche/Car guys. There are in different forum/models. They also make fun sometimes and I think the intentions for the newbies are not meant in a harmful way (I think) sometimes...
Anyway, I enjoy being here and I am starting to meet / chat with some of you guys here. Its nice to know other people's opinion and do "car" talk.
Anyway, keep doing what you guys are doing! Its a great fraternity here!
As a newbie preparing to take the leap on a 996 myself, I appreciate the wealth of info this board has provided. I have never been bashed or flamed or told "go search". Part of the allure of moving to the Porsche marque and this board is that the community is more educated and dare I say mature versus the kids you would deal with on something like a forum for Honda's (nothing against Honda). So thanks to all you guys and gals. Keep up the good spirit!
I know what you mean Geeforce. Being pretty young myself (28) I hang out with a lot of car people in their late teens and early twenties. The mentality you find with them is completely different than what you find on this board.
Bet he won't go on another car forum and in the very first post EVER, (without owning the damn car) in so many words say your car model seats suck and the old car seating is better... Should we worry about hurting peoples feelings from the, 'thinking about buying' a 996 crowd who may never buy the car - or do we help out people who DO buy a 996 (and post pictures)and need our help. Sorry, but it's not the former for me.
He came in here with a chip on his shoulder and is leaving with a bigger one. Not OUR problem. He got what he was looking for I figure - blowback. 99% of all newbie's are treated well here and at one time we were all in the same boat. Re-read his first post. No 'Hi how are you all?' Nothing. It was pure entitlement. It was
I
have a problem with the seating in a car that you guys own and I want YOU to help ME solve it so I '
might
' consider buying the car. It went downhill from there. Reminds me of the type who walk past your table in a coffee shop and their jacket knocks your coffee off the table and when you protest they say, 'You lookin at me..." and begin to act out.
I'm not trying to be unkind here, I DO understand what you are trying to say in the big picture kinda way. But if this is the incident (seating issue) that drove you to start this thread - please pick another more worthy newbie who has a 996 in the garage and an issue they are struggling with to solve. They are the people I think we all want to help. This guy should be lucky he didn't wander into the Off Topic area! (Not that his type would buy a full membership...)
Slow day in the 996 fourm that we need to post threads about treatment of newbs or protocol? If Tim would do his job we wouldn't have to sit in for him
Sounds like most internet perception crap. Jumping to conclusions based on a few random postings taken out of context. The vast majority of newbs (99.9%) come in, introduce themselves, search, lurk, ask questions, etc..
It's rare you get the newbie to jump in with 1 post coming in with entitlement, bashing, dredging up very old threads, not searching, not posting a threads detailing your problem, etc.. Do we need to put a "guideline for newbs" sticky at the top of the forum to help out?
Back on your white horse...........
"
Am considering buying a 996
. Have owned a number of early 70's E's and S's, and a '78 SC. Was shocked when I got in this '99 996 at how Cramped the seating position was. I also noticed several inches of space between the drivers seat and rear seat cushion. The old 911's would press against the cushion, which may be why there was so much space in front.
Is there an easy fix? A way to move the set rails back? Maybe a stop in the rails that can be removed?"
"
This is coming in with a chip on his shoulder? The guy noticed something he didn't like in the particular 996 he looked at. He doesn't know at that point if there was something wrong with that specific car, or if it is something common to the 996. So he asks questions.
He
has a chip on his shoulder? Or are we projecting here?
We warmly welcomed a couple of newbies, that I remember.
Then there was the seat guy. Was it our finest hour? Maybe not. But it wasn't that bad.
Are you Andre the Giant?
The 996 is smaller than previous 911s? What are you smoking?
And someone made me search dtf.
I said "No pic, no mercy". I don't think that was bad, just the usual newbie pic taunt. But he gets on me for my avatar, and the supposed lack of cultural sensitivity. I don't want any part of some fool that thinks a "culture" that will stone a woman to death for appearing in public not covered head to toe is OK, and the women in my avatar have no right to wear their attire in public because it may be insensitive to the same women-stoning barbarians.
The first reply to my first post was "Mmm, newbie. Tastes just like chicken." I won't name the mod that gave me that warm welcome. I thought it was funny. You can't take everything in here, or life, too seriously.
fookin winter! it's messing with everybody. time to get this winter over so we can get back to driving and being happy.
Where's Bobby McFerrin when you need him
I feel after living in Ohio all my life and being stuck in South Korea for a year I deserve to rub it in a little. Besides the constant sun beating on my head has made me delusional.
What about the guy who introduced himself and proclaimed that he was a D-Bag and treats women like crap?
Let's not go to limp on everyone and address them on a case by case basis.
It's not like we would bring out the firing squad for hello kitty stickers but the guy deserved to get shut down for the same reason people randomly beat on him. (most likely)
But most newbies are very nice and I have no problem answering questions that have been asked a thousand times. Search isn't always your friend.
Now reviving 5 year old threads? that's a bit annoying once I have gotten to page 4 and realize it was posted in 06.
IMO, if you weren't around for the Sean Banjeree thread or the Disregard thread, your still a newbie
Most of the comments from long time members are not mean spirited and should not be interpreted that way. Of course, there are some bad apples, and even good apples have a bad day. But overall, there is an attitude of commaraderie here, EVEN for the newbies.
If a newbie doesn't like something another member says, just click the ignore button. I know that button works...

Ben Choi and Banerjee definitely have to go into the Rennlist HOF for the invaluable contributions
Check out SB's website:

Apparently he is studying economics at Harvard. I guess his honors thesis will be on the "the economics of scamming car forums around the world"
Yeah! What he said.
I try to be nice. But once is a while you get a noobe that just shouldnt have a wrench in his hand. Like that ivangene guy.... For example...
I am passing my wrenching onto the kids - enough dirty hands for me.........besides I dont think I ever did figure out what they meant be righty tighty
isnt righty - conservative?
Should be... as in tight-asses.
WHOA!!!! Did I just open the door to have this thread banished to the Political and Controversy section!!!!!
Well, we did have some mild controversy going on here, at least for a little while. Hell, we are up to 50+ posts on this thing already! And some folks admitted guilt to two threads and I didn't even mention which threads I was referring to originally, but you knew who you were! LOL!!! Some very guilty conscience's seeking redemtion. LOL!
I'm all for hazing and roasting the newbies - within limits. That's all I wanted to say. Give them a chance to build a little callous before we rub them the wrong way. The rest of us are up to the challenge when we take flak here.
I was the first to respond to the seat issue with "Is this Andre the giant?". I will stand by that comment....just sorry it went way South after that. Guilty conscience ? Nope. Human yep. But if the OP can't take a joke than well.....you know the line.
Ed's OK with a wrench... you just can't leave him alone with a credit card and the internet.
It's funny, I was going to post some rude comment in that I'm-too-sexy-for-my-seat thread about being squished up against the windshield in early 911s... but I got distracted - maybe I had to do real work - so I didn't post anything. I'm usually late to the party.
Not saying everyone on here is old but you get my drift. If you drive a Porsche then chances are you did something right in life or your mature enough to figure out a way to own one. The local car forum I'm on is full of kids whos parents gave them things and they have no respect for others.
Well I'm a noob here and just wanted to say hello and reintroduce myself. I've been a member before but that account no longer exists. I bought my C4S back in 2006. Great info here as I've referenced this site for info in the past.
Tech_C4S,
Welcome (back) to Rennlist. Tradition requests that you start a new thread in the 996 Forum with your hello. Folks will then give you a little bit of razzing until you post pictures of your car. It is a rite of passage. We are all very happy you are joining us, and this truely is a great place to hang out. And we are all ***** for pictures of 996's, so don't disappoint us. LOL!
Unfortunately this is the beauty of the internet forums - You have all ranges of people from Teenage kids to older/mature guys. I am member of different forums and have found out by reading and browsing that RL has some "serious" car nuts. That is one of the reasons why I joined and paid my fees.
I find some of the guys here very helpful (specially the veterans)
whoa! Ya miss a few days and everything goes crazy!
I actually had the exact same reaction regarding leg room when I got my car and i'm very seriously interested in a 'fix' for it. I'm 6'4" too. Seemed to me like the only other 996 I've been in had more leg room than mine does. I'm new to Porsche and don't have many comparables.
I'll post a properly worded request for help once this whole thing blows over.
That was a brutal thread and maybe went a little over board but people need to learn to get a thick skin. This is the interwebz, not a Tupperware party.
Am I right f***faces?
great, so what am I going to do with all these lids I bought???
I was really hoping to find some nice bowls to put them on, now I just have stacks of lids? F#@* this really sucks!
Yah yah yah get some spunk guys.
