Suggestion

The reason that I went this way was because I kept hearing about how the B&M Console short shifter was notchy, and how the 997 shifter was much smoother, as well as you could adjust the throw on the below carriage SSK.

I've installed the undercarriage B&M short shift kit and paired that with the standard 997 shifter, and I love it.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

22 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Just as I was getting serious about short shift mods, having decided to use the"undercar" type such as B&M it seems they have become scarce. About a year ago Ebay had many, including knock-offs, now there are only a few and Zero undercar? Any suggestions? jvm

POST 2Original post

Why do you want to go from under instead of top side?

POST 4Original post

IMHO the best short shifter mod is the Porsche OEM 997 SSK. Spend the extra money. It is a bolt-in and it is a great mod... Suncoast sells it for $429.95 and I have found nothing better...

POST 5Original post

How did you find the shift action compared to stock? For me the 997 ssk was unbearably difficult to shift. Quick shifts were impossible due to the force required, so my shift time actually increased.

POST 6Original post

interesting.... but I hear the 6gt3 ssk is the best for our cars.

POST 10Original post

sh - sh - shifter? Ta - Ta - Toyota gots it figured out

POST 11Original post

Quotes source post: 8295553

I find the 997 SSK to be 100% better than stock and I do not notice any difficulty or "unbearable" force in shifting. I really like it..

POST 12Original post

Quotes source post: 8296107

lol really? Try that in -25c.... my 997 Shifter is Stiff as Ice around below -15c

POST 13Original post

I agree, any short shifter will have this "issue" of needing more force to get the gears in. It has nothing to do with the shifter itself, just due to the shorter throw. When the car is cool it's harder and when it's warm it's just fine.

POST 14Original post

Quotes source post: 8296119

Very true. I forgot to mention that it gets better as the car warms up. First start and it is a little stiff. But hey "no -25c here"

POST 15Original post

yea i noticed, but where is teh OP From? i hope not North Pole

POST 16Original post

I also wanted the underside mount and couldn't find one. checked w/ B&M and they said it was not all that popular..... Ended up buying a factory 997 but have yet to put it in ... All comments say it is the best choice and of course it's still factory....

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I had just finished typing a thoughtful and amusing reply and when I hit "send" it disappeared and told me I was not logged in. WTF?! Does this site time-out or what? Is my unsent quick reply saved in here somewhere? jvm

POST 18Original post

The undercar short shift kits were sold by B&M, Ruf, Techart and 9ff. I think at least Ruf's is still available. http://epages2.euro-web.net/epages/7...%20000%2050%22

POST 19Original post

My question is this: What are the pros/cons of the "underneath" kit, rather than the usual one installed from within the cabin? That is, if one can still purchase the former from somewhere. It would be good to get some input from someone who has installed the less known kit that installs from underneath the car.

POST 20Original post

Look here: https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...-shifting.html The main advantage of the undercar transmission mounted SSK is that it's adjustable for 3 different levels of shift reduction from 30% - 15%. The console mounted SSK's shift reduction is somewhere in the middle.

POST 21 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

"Smackboy" is right and From my reading of past comments here the under-car shift mod is very simple to install, can be removed back to stock, no pulling apart of the console AND does not change or reduce the sideways movement at the shift lever. In otherwords going 'across the gate" remains stock reducing the chances of hitting the wrong gear. Some here have called the console in-car shortshifters "notchy" for this reason. The one I tried felt fine and even more positive than stock. Going into Ebay with "short shifters porsche" netted 2 pages of shifters priced from $45 (Likely China knock-offs) to $500. The undercar ones were B&M an individual listed for about $150 to an absurdly priced "Tech Art" at about $500. For a simple drilled and tapped block of billet? Not for me, thanks. I ordered the $45 one to try. I'll let you know...... jvm
