Really wanted an air-cooled and was oh so close to purchasing a 993 cabrio but then decided to test drive the 996.

In any case my 996 goes to Burger King, the grocery store, and is used just as car should be.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I forgot to mention yesterday that I have now had my car for one year!!!
I got my first P-car in 2002 but started lusting over the rear-engined cars soon thereafter. Really wanted an air-cooled and was oh so close to purchasing a 993 cabrio but then decided to test drive the 996.
I can happily say it's been the right choice for me. The car is everything I want it to be and although it let me down once on the track due to a bad alternator, the rest of my experience has been great!
Anyone just thinking about buying these cars, do it!
Amen!
Congrats! Sounds like you and I went through a similar process. I was all about buying a 993 coupe but I don't fit real well in them. I'll have one year with my first P-car (hopefully not my last) in July.
April 9 marked one year with mine. I love it! And while I don't necessarily have any regrets about it I do still feel a little weird owning it. I'm sure I'll get over it with some more time.
I fit great in the 993 but had never given the 996 a chance because all I kept reading was "it rides like a Lexus" or "it has no soul."
I figured let me make my own impression so when I drove it for the first time I was shocked. This car does not deserve the reputation it sometimes has. Sure it has a more compliant suspension but I think for almost all 911s to feel like a true sports car they require some minor modifications. As for the other negative comments, I think often times they're made by those who haven't given the car a fair chance yet.
None at all - except for waiting as long as I did to go through with the purchase. Actually that's not entirely true as I did enjoy my time with my previous 944 cabrio.
I do get a lot of looks and questions/comments from people about this car. So it's absolutely not a vehicle for the shy person. I'm pretty outgoing so it doesn't both me but my wife hates the attention when she rides with me. All of my experiences have been good when talking to people about it, I guess it helps that I'm excited about owning it so I don't give off the illusion that I bought it to increase my social status, I bought it because I love everything about it!
I feel like the car is above me, so to speak. When not at work I wear t-shirts, jeans, and flip-flops. I'm always wrenching on my race bikes (motorcycles) and sport all the dirt and grime on my hands and underneath my fingernails that goes along with that. Hell, prior to acquiring the car, one of the coolest things I ever purchased was a billet Brembo brake caliper for one of the bikes. This 911 was a
huge
step up the ladder.
The car is so nice and most people think it's very expensive so I constantly feel like I'm being scrutinized when people look at me while driving it. As fpena alluded to, I'm not a very extroverted person. So when people approach me at gas stations, parking lots and the like, I'm happy to talk with them about it but not exactly comfortable with the situation, if you catch my drift.
More than that, though, is my friends and coworkers. I'm not yet 30 years old and most of the people I hang around aren't in the position to buy such a vehicle. As a result, I've gone to great lengths to keep it a secret for fear of their reaction. As you'd imagine, some people still found out about it and the reactions (that I have heard) are mixed; some genuinely happy, others less so.
For what it's worth, I feel the same way about the high end watches I own and spend more time trying to make sure they're hidden under my cuff than I do appreciating their beauty. It's sad. But like I said, with time and age I'm sure things will improve. I'm a huge fan of the car and look forward to every drive. I think hiding it like I do makes me appreciate it that much more.
Some people will understand, some won't. I doubt you come across as someone who is flaunting thier Porsche ownership as some do. Relax , enjoy your Porsche and pay less attention to reactions you can't control.
Jordan,
I'm only a little older than you (in my mid 30s but most believe I'm younger) and don't fit the mold of the stereotypical Porsche owner myself. I also wear jeans to work and generally live under my means with the 996 being our only indulgence. So I know some people ask themselves when they see me, "How the hell did he get that car?"
In any case my 996 goes to Burger King, the grocery store, and is used just as car should be. I never apologize for owning it and as said before show great enthusiasm for it when I am asked questions. So I've never had a negative reaction for owning it. I don't make it a point to go out of my way to tell people I have it, but if they ask then by all means I let them know.
But there will always be some people who will never be happy for you and as Barn mentioned its just best to ignore them. So go out and enjoy that car!
I'm 33, and friends say that they are very happy for me. I've been a car guy since I was a fetus and everyone around me knows it. I have kept it under wraps at work, god knows how long it will take to get a promotion if everyone knows I have a 911.
Interestingly, folks say that I have acheived one of my life long dreams at such and early age, and they say "good for you!"
Little do they know (hell, the wife doesn't even know) that my longer term goal is to own many P-cars, at the same time.
Do I want a GT3, Turbo, GT2, or a new C2S Targa? The answer is "YES!"
I've had mine for a little over a year now as well. Once sorted out, she has been very good to me. And I have the only Porsche in my area sporting a Recaro baby seat in back!
I would rather be a young guy driving an old Porsche than an old guy driving a new one. Everyone thinks Im crazy driving around in a Porsche 911, but I really dont care, I just love to drive a performance car. I have always had a sports car since college and my 1970 British Triumph GT6 Plus.
IMO trading up to a newer model gains very little.... the 996 is an amazing car and if taken care of will give as much joy as any 997 unless you are in to all the gadgets - I drove a 2010 C4S and would be happier in a 996 C2 (or 997 S
)
like Fernando said... DO IT !!
