Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

But it has to be the right one and you have to be sure it is used properly to give a reliable and accurate oil level "reading".
Leading evidence: 'Use properly' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check dip stick' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
My local mechanic told me that I should have the engine running when checking the dip stick ?

If engine hot -- up to temp -- when you shut off the engine and car parked on level ground you can check oil with dipstick (or in dash display) after a few minutes.

I check the oil level with the engine cold first thing in the AM.

I have never heard of that, can you guy confirm that the oil check should be done after a drive and rest for +_ 2 hours.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Moved the car in and out of the garage real quick , no real drive just a few starts and stops..
I did notice the oil measurement light at the bottom bar and flashing, its always usually always right at the middle.
Question is I'm pretty sure this is more accurate at normal engine operating temp, didnt have time to drive it all today, just wondering. Also the timer somehow reset to 60:00 then 10:00..oil pressure was normal when idling too.
ANy thoughts? thanks
Best oil level is topped off. Down low sucks. It sounds like your car has been sitting during winter. Change the oil and drive it instead of just in and out. For the foolish writing I've seen I believe porsche says if going by the LCD oil level have it at least the half mark. Just top it off using the dip stick method or change the oil and replace up to topped off.
Oil will absorb water. Porsche will even tell you you might notice after a long drive the oil level dropping way down. This is explained as the water cooking off and not an oil leak or engine burning oil. Yes the oil can harbor a lot of water so drive the car more like on long trips.
Give the cold oil about an hour to drain back into the "dry sump" at the bottom of the engine. Then check it. When it is in the middle of the dip stick turn the key on and see how many bars the auto measure shows. That will give you the number of bars that is correct for your car\gauge\sensor combo.
In my 996 the digital has always read a bar or two over what the dipstick indicated. Also, just a FYI, both the electronic and dipstick seem to max about 20-30 minutes after shutting the engine off when hot. On the electronic, cold is from 1 to 2 bars lower than hot.
My local mechanic told me that I should have the engine running when checking the dip stick ? I have never heard of that, can you guy confirm that the oil check should be done after a drive and rest for +_ 2 hours. I just want to have it clear once for all.
I think I might have a little too much oil, how to proceed and remove a little quantity can it be done with a tube and syringe ?
If engine hot -- up to temp -- when you shut off the engine and car parked on level ground you can check oil with dipstick (or in dash display) after a few minutes. I check the oil level with the engine cold first thing in the AM. Then whenever I fill up the gas tank. And frequently at other times.
If engine oil level high, too high, you can remove oil filter housing and pour out the oil then carefully reinstall the housing with the element properly positioned.
This removes about 1/2 quart of oil. That's nearly 2 bars' worth on the dash display.
Oh, the engine should be off to check the oil with the dipstick or in-dash display. Porsche says to if the dipstick and in-dash display disagree believe the dipstick. But it has to be the right one and you have to be sure it is used properly to give a reliable and accurate oil level "reading".
Sincerely,
Macster.
